  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I plan on purchasing a 2011 17 inch macbook pro and installing 2 SSDs in it and putting the in RAID 0. I'm not sure which to go with, though. I 've heard that these are the best, but does anyone have a prefeerance? thanks.
OWC Mercury Extreme Pro
OCZ Vertex
Kingston HyperX

The OWC Mercury Line are really fantastic SSDs. I feel they're really your best option right now.

I own OCZ and Crucial SSDs and performance has been good but I've had occasional issues so from here on out I'm sticking with OWC.

Have you guys checked out the new Seagate hybrid drives? I know they only sport 8gb in SSD and the rest is standard 7200rpm but for the price they ain't that bad. I been considering picking one up myself just because they have tons of space and some of the SSD speed advantages at the same time, though these really are suited best for laptops and not towers that have many bays. Here is a link to them

Make sure the drive supports proper incompressible data support and you'll be set. Honestly, I think they all perform pretty much the same (and are limited by the connection speed before their read/write speed is tapped out), so you can't really go wrong performance wise. Sorry that isn't a straight recommendation, but I haven't done specific research yet.

Faster SSD's for faster sata ports. Anything with the new port should use a 6gb/s SSD for super crazy speed

I'm using Samsung 470 series...very fast, reliable and afordable drives. They are also compatible with Sound Devices Pix 240.

I haven't tried the OCZ Vertex3 SSD's so can't really comment. I guess I'm refusing to buy them because of the three Vertex2 SSD's I bought, two of them burned themselves up in less than a year of moderate use. Got one replaced under warranty (then sold it), they stiffed me on the other because they refused to go off purchase date and manufacture date put the warranty expiration about 6 weeks before it failed. So, not real happy with OCZ over that one.

Having very good luck here with the Mushkin Chronos 6Gbps SSD's. The OWC SSD's have been solid. I'm hearing good things about the latest ones from Crucial, but haven't tried them. Did try a new Samsung, their latest and greatest 6Gbps one. Seemed OK, but wasn't as fast as the Mushkin or OWC. I'm partial to Mushkin because they're local to me. If I have a problem, I can walk through their front door and throw it at them. ...I guess I could do the same for Crucial/Micron, Seagate, Maxtor and others. OWC has good support too.

I have both the OCZ Vertex3 240GB and the OWC Mercury Extreme, both SATA 3 (6Gbps) and they bench similarly (AJA Disk test) and in real-world have identical robustness. This is based on use in a 13" MBP.

Jeff Kilgroe has a valid gripe with the way OCZ handled many problems with their previous line, the Vertex2. OWC has always had a good reputation for their support and customer service. Given that they both run the same Sandforce controllers and have similar specs, I don't think that you would go wrong with either one. Both have been rock solid for me for nearly a year. Getting ~480MBps consistently reads and writes on both brands.

I also just installed 2 OCZ Vertex3 240GB SSDs RAID0 in my new workstation build. ATTO benchmarks the stripe at 1000MBps. We will see over time and after filling them up some how they fair.

On a sidenote and friendly word of caution, I tried putting both model SSDs into my older 2009 17" MBP with the nVidia MCP79 SATA chipset, which is only SATA2 (3Gbps) and it negotiated them both down to SATA (1.5 Gbps) speed. I was expecting them to max out the SATA2 speed, but apparently it is a shortcoming of the nVidia Chipset in that model MBP. So make sure that you are using a proper SATA3 controller.

I have a 128gb Vertex 2 3.5 in the MacPro and it's been great, I've heard good and bad things with the OWC and OCZ drives, they're basically the same thing. The thing about Crucial is they make the chips for everyone else and then more likely to bin the higher quality components for their own products, same with Intel.

OWC is hard to go past for Mac though as you're not stuffing around with upgrading firmware, etc

OCZ 6G Extremes here for both Mac and PC. Great support, top performance, and made in usa.

so none of you guys have tried the seagate hybrid 750 gb with 8gb of ssd? i really want to get an owc ssd for a laptop but the price per gb is so insane i really am leaning towards trying one of these hybrid seagate drives instead. they make sense when you only have one bay to use. obviously for desktops with more then one bay the ssd's for aps and hdd's for media is the way to go, but when confronted with one bay and slow bottlenecks for external drives i really think this seagate might have something to offer us guys with only one bay available. any of you tried the new seagate hybrids yet?

Those Seagate Hybrid HDD + SSD disks, while faster than most HDDs, are quite slow compared to true SSDs.
