  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Do shipping Scarlets have same sensor flare issue as current Epics?

Anybody know, or can confirm either way? I believe there was a fix in the works for Epics, wondering if it made it into Scarlets as well.

Do you mean the array of four vertical dots when shooting straight into the sun? Judging by the flash photo of the sensor in the picture in the first post of this thread: I would say it will probably show the same flare. I don't really see it as a huge deal since most if not all cmos digital cams exhibit some sort of image 'issue' when pointed directly at the sun… chalk up a win for film.

No, the sensor flare issue:

+1

I also would like to know this. Owners, confirm or deny

They said there was a fix going to be put in but not yet,Soon.

Interesting Sean. Do you know if this was to be similar to the third party products already on sale, which are anti-reflective strips of material which sit over the metal sides nearest the sensor, and which the camera owner can out their themselves, so as to cut out the reflection flares? An alternative would be for cameras to return to red and have a different coating/design to the same metal surfaces.

Don't believe there is a fix yet,

They did say that there were going to be two methods, one permanent and one that you could interchange...

No timeframe given but acknowledged they were working on a method...when its ready obviously they'll say more...

I assume we could expect it in 1st half 2012 but thats just an assumption...supposedly that flare issue is only more pronounced because of the 5K? It was supposedly there with RED Ones

The issue still present on Epic.

This is the newest info from Red Co. from yesterday, as far I know.

The user installable fix is coming first. Should have a date next week if the first production samples test ok.

They said their going to fix it at no-charge (an official, permanent fix), which is more than most companies would do. (I mean, even Apple just acted like there was nothing wrong with the iPhone4 and continued to sell the thing broken-assed.)

That said, having to pay for shipping (one-way, right?) and being out of commission for the turnaround time is definitely a PITA, especially for international customers.

It be interesting to find out if yet-to-be-shipped EPICs and Scarlets will have this implemented as well. Ordering my Scarlet sometime before the 1st, more than a little excited :)

Shouldn't need to ship your camera anywhere.

Touche. I saw that too, but in the same thread (or maybe it was another) they said the permanent one was the better/recommended solution... not sure if they meant "better performing" or "better because it's permanent."

I'm guessing Red's flare guard solution will be "permanent" based on not using adhesive based flocking material. Most adhesives don't last forever and can perform strangely under different weather conditions. It will likely be a hard rectangular piece of plastic/metal maybe covered with some other flocking material that will slide into place and fit firmly. Maybe with a collar or lip with some way to attach it into the sensor box.

I do believe this is a priority for them and they are working on it as it literally effects every Epic and Scarlet being sold.

We'll have to wait and see.

In the mean time, if you are working on sets where this could potentially be an issue and you don't want to put something in there on your own, matte boxes and flags are good ways to problem solve in tough situations. For people who like getting natural flare effects, install the flock yourselves with tabs on the front to easily remove it once the official Red solution flies in.

I wouldn't want it to be permanent as I think the flares are fabulous! Be nice to kill them when needed but for me it will be the minority.

I think RED will have a user installable solution soon, and also will do a fix for Scarlets and Epics going out the door.

Until then, I think my solution is best:

Jim didn't seem to happy about "flocked" materials, and Jarred did say "Thanks, this is great" when I emailed him about my foam solution.

Also, my foam uses no adhesive so you can yank it and get those flares back if you like them.

I think it's not so much to worry about, tried to recreate it several times with no luck...But I guess when shooting straight into the sun or so it might be worth looking trough the takes before moving on to the next setup... Even if thats not something I would even bother doing.
