  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

6" 19mm Carbon Fiber Rod

Lee,

How are they measured? It doesn't seem straight forward and I would like to order 15mm and 19mm.

I don't think that they have 15mm, but the ones listed are exactly 19mm and work perfectly.

Alex,

Thanks for that. You guys complaining that Reduser is dead take note!

With the upgrade to EPIC I'm wondering about cutting my 24" RED carbon fibre rods down to 6" and 18" lengths. Does anyone know any reason I shouldn't cut them? I don't want them to splinter into a thousand pieces or anything....

+1

I'd like to know, too. That's what I'm thinking about doing also. :-)

Check out these

I have bought 4", 6", 12" and 18" from them. They are the real deal and very affordable. They come with bullshit plastic plugs at the end that tend to be slightly out of round. Pop those out and you are good to go. The tubes themselves are great. They are not tapered like RED CF rods, but I have not found that to be an issue. They have worked as well for me as their more expensive brethren. I do have have a few sets of the RED CFs as well, which I like just fine. Good to have options.

Also, FWIW. I have a fair bit of Berkey stuff too. Very useful, but I don't think their tubes are always interchangeable with 19mm film gear. Maybe its the anodizing that makes them minutely thicker, but I have hit components that go fine on all my other 19mm stuff that will not go on the Berkey rods without more force than I'd like to apply. For the majority of uses they have worked fine.

We bought a lot of the dragonplate.com stuff. It's great. buy a few get somebody with a good straight cutting saw cut them up for you in different lengths. We have everything form 5 cm long once to 45 cm. The short once work great as top mount rods for holding follow focus etc. Better than buying the more expansive stuff. And they are though, they will not ben or brake...

It has been explained to me that not all CF is made equally. You want stuff that has fibers going two directions, and some of the extruded resin stuff is not as strong or long lasting. At least that's what I remember from my conversations with people who make the stuff. The Guy at Carbon XL seems very knowledgeable about the details and is easy to reach and ask questions. I emailed him briefly about the CF crane he offers and my worries about how CF can become brittle due to UV exposure and he sent me some very detailed responses, and then put some pieces outside to run a year long test on them. Good guy. Good product.

There was a thread a while back where I believe Jarred if my memory serves me said a lot of carbon rods will splinter into shards if you clamp them to tight etc.
If you want to try rod not designed for cam's It's probably worth buying one and beating it up a bit to see how it holds up before hanging camera gear off of it.

I'm guessing I won't have a problem with cutting the RED rods but I would def like to hear if anyone else out there has done it....
