  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

In case you missed it ...

Quick observation... I took the same R3D files, on the same system, drives, etc. and I am finding that DNxHD creation is 30% faster than the equivalent ProRes (4:2:2). Although my tests have been far from exhaustive, it has been pretty consistent so far. Most likely reflects the speed of the encode to the destination format since the decode is all real time due to hardware.

Michael,
Thanks for the responce on the audio! It still doesnt seem like any of the files actually lined up though.

Have you had any success with any cropping settings? When ever I choose any crop setting it seems to disreguard my scaling setting. Example. Taking a 4K16 by 9 shot, with 16x9 framelines to crop and scale down to 1080P.

Cheers,

Thats amazing.

I assume that you will have to treat each day as a separate project for the syncing then so there are not similar TOD Timecodes within different clips? (Similar to FCPs Sync N Link)

Jesse

Yes, any more info on this feature?

I am just curious if anyone has went through any testing on the audio syncing within Rocket Cine X or Redcine X? The versions I am running are: RocketcineX Build 1707 and RedcineX Build 44.

Once in the AV folder the Auto Search button doesn't really seem to do anything. Is there a certain folder structure you should have before importing your video, so Rocket can search for TC within your audio files? Or does it really look at the TC? ( I don't see that displayed anywhere when in AV Sync... )

Also when I use the Set Audio File tool. After importing any audio that is 24 Bit it seems to play back o.k, but files that are 16 Bit sound very distorted and staticy.

Cheers,
Jesse

Try setting the TC override to 48048.
This works around the huge mess that is false 48k and how every program and recorder interprets or writes BWFs assuming the shift up to 48048 or not.

We're testing again here with 16bit files but if you can email me, we'd like to get our files to test with.

Still playing with the syncing - I have one take that refuses to see the common timecode - I will be sending that to RED team to look into. I still will most likely AutoSync in Media Composer since it is just as fast, maintains indexes to both sources with all metadata and goes beyond the 4 tracks (8, 16, and more).

Some jobs though will benefit from syncing during transcode and that is going to be based on how you want to organize your dailies - all about organization!

I would probably do a hierarchy that looks like:

[Folder] Shoot Date
[folder] Shoot date_#_picture
[folder] Shoot date_#_sound

The _# represents the contents of a camera/card idea such as A01, etc.

From there I would manage the syncing in ROCKECTCINE-X based on that in batches of each picture folder as audio will span several picture folders as the files are smaller.

I have only played with scaling, have not done any cropping.

I think that is definitely true. But for any job that you may want to send through compressor or any other software to do more file conversions. Ie. MPeg for DVD, or Ipod. etc. It would be nice to have the audio in your original export, so that new material can then become your source for compressing.

I agree that there will be workflows that benefit from sync dailies out of ROCKETCINE-X versus within the NLE - For me, a Media Composer user, syncing in Avid is fast, and I can export QT references for processing into MPEG2 and other streaming formats as needed. I use Carbon Coder Rhozet for HD encoding to SD MPEG, etc. Very fast (near real time for software encode), does proper 709 -> 609 color space, etc.

So, I just did a test in the new Redcine X build and exported a clip at 720 DNxHD 60 MXF. REDCINE X exported an aaf Metadata file which I imported and exported a .mxf file. I imported my aaf metadata file first into my bin and put the MXF file into its proper folder "Avid Media Files", "1". It worked like a charm

Just out of curiosity Mike, did you work from 4K files? I cant seem to get any 2K files to render out as MXF. For 4K, that is indeed pretty bad ass that you can simply import the MXFs without any waiting period at all!

All the source files were a mix of 3k and 4k. I can give 2k shots a try later and report back. Finally there is a logical Avid workflow with this feature. I love Avid but just never thought it made sense to jump through all the hoops to get the RED files into the software with metadata etc. Glad RED made this a priority and when REDCINE-X becomes full featured and Into a more stable state it will be great for dailies.

UPDATE: I just tested a 2K clip. It did begin to render and got about 85% finished and then REDCINE-X crashed. However, it did create an mxf file and aaf file which imported just fine into AMC. Not sure if it was a random crash or if it just doesn't like 2K material.

O.k.
I was using Rocketcine Vs's Recine...
Is your 2K footage 16x9 or 2:1 ?
My 2K, 2:1 material always stopped at exactly 2%. Also there was an error msg that would come up within the Batch window. Unfortunately I am not at my office anymore and don't know exactly what it said. Something along the lines of this footage can not be rendered...

The 2K Footage I rendered was 2:1. No error message appeared just a sudden crash. Try exporting a file tomorrow when you get to the office in REDCINE-X build 44 and see what happens.

Send me the log files (~/Library/Application Support/RED/REDcinex/logs) and any apple crash logs henever you run into problems.

I have re-Installed my Rocket Cine X. And the MXF output is working great!
I have had success with 2k16X9, 2K2:1, 4K 16x9 and 4K 2:1 (using audio fed to camera).

The only thing I am now missing is the 16x9 frameline cropping. When ever you set any cropping it seems to be disregarding the scale. Maybe there is a different order in which things are done then I am used to with Red Rushes?

One other question I had was whether or not I am indeed getting all of the meta deta I will need to push my project through the whole pipeline. This is how I am exporting and importing into Avid:
- Export MXF and AAF from RED Rocket™
- Drag MXF and AAf file into my Avid Media Files folder
- Open Avid Media Composer, making my project on the same drive.
- Click on Tools from the top menu options.
- Select Media Tool
- Select my hard drive in which the MXF and AAF file are on. Hit O.K
- Media Tool window appears with 2 files for each clip. Drag all into my bin. And one file will appear within the bin per clip. (the other is hidden)

If anyone knows of a better workflow, I would love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks,

Hey Mike,
I was able to render out of Redcine without it crashing using 4k and 2k, both 16x9 and 2:1. Although the Fit Height option Stretches the image vs's cropping the sides like it does in Rocketcine.

Congrats! I rendered again myself a 2k file and it rendered just fine. Here's to new and improved software,
cheers!

I have problems to import the mxf container generated by the rocket into the mediacomposer 4.0.2
Can anybody help ?

Just import the aaf files first into your bin. Then take your MXF files and put them into your "Avid Media Files", "MXF", "1", folder and they will automatically link up. You cannot import an mxf file into a bin. It must remain in the source directory to be read and the aaf file acts as your offline clip containing all the metadata ie. source timecode for the RED files.

Cheers
