  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-X: Recommended Canon EF lenses

has anyone put a canon 17-55mm f2.8 on an epic to see if it vignettes?

We can't get the best results using still photography lens. I'm assuming Canon mount as great but temporary solution anyway which is , meanwhile, needs to be replaced with PL. Unless you have planes to buy a new Canon cine lenses with EF-mount (which is could be excellent choice, by the way). This is why I am Not going to expand my current EF-mount inventory.

And I'm agreed with Claus - If you already have something like 24-70/700-200 !L! and couple primes you are good to go!

Can you explain why we can't get the "best results" using the Canon mount?

would love to know the answer to this too

Me three. I heard that it vignettes pretty badly at 5K on the Epic, but I'm curious if it still does at 4K on the Scarlet. I'd love to have a great "all purpose" lens like this I could stick on and shoot a variety of different stuff.

Despite the issues with infinite focus ..which a lot of us have learned to cope with/deal with on the Mk II, many of the canon primes and zooms..despite being "primarily for stills", are pretty amazing. Cant help thinking the red boys feel the same, hence the canon mount on da scarlet. Of course theyre trying to grab the 5d crowd, but i like to think its also a little nod to the glass that already exists out there. Im biased because i own a beautiful set of canons (and one 35 mm 1.4 Samyang.. my fave lens!) Im personally planning on pushing them all even harder on the scarlet, and making them sing. No matter what angle i come at it, little scarlet -x and the ef's will be the most powerful set of cinematic tools ive ever had my hands on! Vive the EF's!

I will be using a Zeiss Compact Prime 50mm for most my shooting (i.e. if u have to pick one high end lens ... is a good place to start i think). Another nice thing is you can change the mount plate on the lens if you ever go PL. I currently have the lens set up for EF, where I use the zeiss currently on a canon 5d. I am staying for now with EF mount for now, but as i move from HDSLR to RED, over time I am consider switching to PL lenses.

Am going to use all my Canon glass and Zeiss glass - 35mm and 50 Zeiss w Canon mounts, Canon 24-105 L. Need to think about something Prime wider now that my 35mm Zeiss will essentially be a 50mm and the 50 an 80ish focal length. I also have the Nikon 24-70, which when the other mount comes out I will also get, as I have vintage Nikon 28mm and the 1.4 50mm Nikkor. All in all the Scarlett is a dream camera body for my lens collection at 4K and below. Even for 5k stills it should rival a medium format camera, which I have always wanted but could never get close to affording.

So, the Scarlet-X package is quite a bit more than I had anticipated, but it's also a vastly superior Scarlet. But no lens included :/

Can anyone recommend a few inexpensive lenses that are compatible with the Canon EF mount that would be considered essentials?

Canon still makes nice lenses ... Best bang for your buck ... Canon's 24-40 ... $1400 yes, not so cheap ... But, has macro built in (4 inches) and shines past 35mm.

The new 70-200mm IS II is sick on the Epic.

Will the lack of IS on the EF 24 - 70mm be of any concern? It will be my only lens for the first couple months :(

ditto. Just bought it yesterday, can't wait to fire it up on my scarlet. Thinking of picking up the canon 8-16 L to cover the ultrawide stuff, anyone shot it on the Epic?

That's a fisheye lens. You might take that into consideration- heavy distortion! Maybe a Canon 10-22 would suit this better...it's the widest you can get on aps-c. If my memory doesn't fail me...

When you use an APS-C lens are the focal lengths (in terms of field of view) relative to a full frame camera still? What I mean by this is that if you have an APS-C 10-22mm lens will it still be 10-22mm at 4k on the Red (which, as I understand it has the same crop factor, 1.6x, as an APS-C camera)? Or would the same crop factor still apply, making the field of view more similar to a 16-35mm full frame lens?

Put one on the Epic today. At 5kFF:
Vignettes badly at 17mm, and a bit worse around 30mm.
It should be ok at 4k.
The 10-22 also vignetted slightly at 5kFF, but not with a hard, black shadow. It might be correctable to an extent in a grade.

GREAT LENS< very sharpe with beautiful bouquet. The 24-70 less sharp wide, better in close-ups on a longer lens, too bad it lost a bit of something from the models that came before it.
