  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-X: Recommended Canon EF lenses

I bought a Canon XL1-s some years ago. The camera itself no longer works (not very well anyway) but the lens is still functional. Is this compatable with the Scarlet-X? I took this quote from the canon website

Like its predecessor, the XL1, the XL1S also features Canon’s unique lens-mount system. When used with an optional EF mount adapter, this system allows the user to add Canon’s range of EF lenses for EOS 35 mm camera, adding to the versatility of the XL1S.

I'm assuming the XL lens is proprietory to the XL cameras but don't know for certain. Anybody able to help here?

I have a canon EOS 1000D stills camera. The XL lens is too small for that cameras mount so Im guessing it will be the same for Scarlet. But almost embaressed to admit despite constant googling I cant find out exactly what kind of lens mount the XL1-s uses, I know it isn't EF, so XL just another name for EF-S? Or something different?
 
Are EF-S lenses supported on Scarlet-X with canon EF mount? EF-S lenses allow for more wide shots when shooting higher frame rates with cropped sensor.
I know that by design, back side of EF-S lens has a bigger protrusion than EF. On the DSLR there is no point in using EF-S lens on body with FF sensor due to vignetting, but on Scarlet(and EPIC) with cropped format modes using EF-S lenses would be quite practical.
Maybe someone from RED could chime in and comment.
 
24-105 is great, although it breathes a bit and isn't cheap. 70-200 is very nice too, but I find it hard to justify spending that much on a lens I won't use all that often. Tokina 11-16 is awesome. On the cheaper end I think the Tamron 17-50 is a great deal, pulling focus with it is difficult though, and it does vignette a little wide open.

If you want cheap primes and don't need metadata or AF, get a Nikon AI adapter for $70 and stock up on used manual Nikon lenses. keh.com is pretty great for this.

If you ever plan on zooming during a shot, don't buy a variable aperture lens, it'll flash and look like crap.

Isn't the XL1 a 1/3" SD camcorder? No way the lens would cover the 35mm image circle or have enough resolution.
 
I think EF lenses can be used with XL-1 I don't think XL-1 lenses can be used with EF. Wrong direction with the adapter. Also the Xl-1 was a 1/3" chip right? That would cover less than 1k worth of RED's s35 chip without vignetting unless they over-engineered the XL-1 lens.
 
Got this crop factor info on another thread. This is cool. Helps us select lenses.
So if I get this right, shooting Scarlet-X in 24fps cinema motion at 4K or Quad HD gives us a factor of 1.6 X the MM on our lens, right?
This would make:
the Cannon 16-35 f2.8L a 25-56 mm lens,
the Cannon 24-70 f2.8L a 39-112mm lens.
the Cannon 200mm 2.8 fixed is now a 320mm lens.
(in comparison to a 35mm film STILL camera, where 50mm is human eye.)

Or am I completely stunk and droned?

Cool, thanks. I was reading (but not paying attention) this thread before the Scarlet has grown up :-) Actually there is one more on the list: Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
I didn't expect EF-S to work on Scarlet/EPIC. Judging by Jarred's comment it might be that all EF-S lenses are safe to use. I'll have to check more into this.

If your lens is not on the list, it's ok, you still will get rudimentary support, such as IRIS control and Stabilization if the lens has it.

the 10-22 is ... okay ... I owned both it and the 11-16 and ran a bunch of comparison tests to look at perspective distortion

but its useful if you need the extra range in one lens

the 17-55 lives on my DSLR as I love the range and it has great MFT.

I'm sure you're right Gavin. Yes, an EF lens can be used with the XL with an adapter and the XL1 was a 1/3" chip. The rear glass of the canon lens it comes with is about 21mm diameter, would probably make for some interesting P.O.V vignette effects if you could get it to fit a scarlet

24mm and 35mm are my focal length of choice for the 3D work I am doing right now. I think the 24mm TS-E is Canon's sharpest 24mm. It is a specialty lens that is big and expensive. It is also manual focus.

well, it depends on what type of aerials you're shooting... not sure there's a one size fits all.

i did a good bit of shooting with the 10-22, though i've heard the tokina 11-16 is better regarded. depending on what kind of craft you're in, 10/11 may be a little too wide, though given that you're probably going to stabilize it anyways, it's not a big deal to get a piece of the wing or something in the shot every now and then.

i was also shooting on the 28-135, with IS. for how inexpensive that lens is i like it alot. i was mostly at 28 or 35 on that, rarely going to 50 or about 70.

so i'm not sure what to tell you on primes. it's nice to have something really wide, like 8-12. 18, 24, 35, and 50 are good. going above 85-100 or so gets tough without some gyros or a steadicam setup, or similar.

alright, i've looked into this a little bit more. apparently the image stabilization works with a single element at the very back of the lens shifting with gyros to compensate opposite to your movement. by essence, it has to kind of "reset" itself once in awhile, which can potentially cause problems when panning, or trying to achieve other smooth movements. i need to do some testing. i haven't had any problems, though i usually tend to turn it off when i'm shooting on the tripod. it would probably best to only use it when you actually need it. at the very least it will save your batteries. if i can do some quick tests on my dslr i will, and post a thread...
 
I love the canon mount tokina 11-16 on the epic in 5k and I'm not seeing any vignetting on mine. I also have the duclose modded tokina and it does not vignette in 5k. My favorite prime is the 24 1.4 it has survived a machete attack in Brazil and still looks great. The 24-70 is currently my favorite lens and the 70-200 is a great small zoom easily hand holdable.
 
I’m looking for some advice re lenses for my Scarlet X. As soon I get my paws on mine I will have an aluminum shallow water ‘surf’ housing made for it. The housing will be used for filming great or not so great white sharks in Africa and general ocean sports.
I have a Sigma 8-16mm in Canon mount that works well on my 7D.
I bought this lens several years ago because it was made for the smaller sensor and is the widest angle I can find and is pretty sharp wide open. I haven’t found any other wider angle zoom.
My other option is a 9.8 Tegea in PL mount. I’ve used this on my 35mm underwater film camera and gotten great results. The Tegea lens takes a flat front port while the Sigma will need a curved front port which is more complex to focus thru underwater.
So, which one will be wider underwater? The Sigma 8-16 or the Tegea 9.8?
I’m guessing the Sigma, and am hoping that it will cover the Scarlet X sensor. Any opinions? Can anyone calculate what the equivalent angle of view above water will be on either of these two lenses?
I also have the old Canon 150-600 f5.6 (PL) with a 2x extender and a Canon 400mm F2.8 autofocus. Any suggestions which would be the one to keep? The 150-600mm is light to carry, works well as a manual zoom but at 300-1200mm it’s a slow F11. The Canon 400mm is heavy to haul around but fast and I can put the 1.4 or 2x extenders on it easily. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Somewhere here RED stated that their Nikon and Leica mounts will be at the store in December, shipping in January.
