  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Expectations...

Usually I try to stay away from REDUSER, normally for extended periods. BUT every time I do I miss something or I find that I have been asleep at the wheel and not keeping up.

The thing that’s frustrating is that this is one of RED’s primary source or market place for “information” exchange. As someone who’s used to being in charge and is a bit of control freak and likes to plan WELL ahead and needs to be absolutely on the cutting edge the REDUSER paradigm is a difficult “quantity” to manage.

So lately with a bad case of RED Balls, and other things I have successfully managed to go stark raving mad, go off the cliff, jump the shark, (and apparently “nuke the fridge”). Not bad huh?...(Not bad for an hour and half’s “work”).

Probably after this “experience” after Nov 3rd the thing that I am looking forward to most is the actual DOING rather than the POSTING. This is the thing a bit like what Evan says, he doesn’t care of it’s 720p (as long as it’s up gradable). At this point I don’t care if it’s a large matchbox with rubber bands and mice on the inside and a lens baby on the front. The important thing is that we learn RED “Platform”. From a business perspective it’s imperative that we get on with this and these particular tools, if we don’t for us this will constitute a serious mistake (at least in our line of work). I’m very happy that accessible and very competent/amazing tools are being offered.

The one thing that I really treasure is the people that I meet on REDUSER, people that have real dreams or people that are doing real things or both.

LLiam you are definitely a very class act and your positivity is infectious and abounds. Evan super interesting unusual and awesome, and many others too that I have recently gotten to know.... Wayne we never figured out which one of us was bender or flexo?

BUT I have to tell you if I NEVER see another speculative post regarding specs…$, K, fps etc. it would be not be too soon. If I ever post again I am hoping it’s because I have a genuine technical query rather than Ohhh My crystal ball is bigger more accurate and shinier than yours… kind of thing! I think Jim is right speculation overload is bad...

Good luck Everybody come the day (hopefully as a result we all get to DO a lot)

Very Best,

Eric

Fantastic post Eric. (Specifically that bit about me of course :))
In all seriousness, thanks for your lovely words, and right back at you. Your a very inspiring individual, and I look forward to getting to meet you one day.
I'm also looking forward to getting back to DOING as my primary focus exactly as you said, but I'm enjoying the friendships I'm making here also.

And cheers Mark btw. Glad you got a giggle :)

Best Wishes all
Lliam

Is this some kind of weird mantra? I`m seeing stuff like this all over this forum (I`m closely following Red since that days long before Red One existed...) and I am still clueless why grown up people write these monologues that lack any substance or information.

I think it's a Californian thing :-)

I'm going to presume your genuinely interested in a response Mariano and not just being a wanker,

It is because RED communicates to people through artistic potential, not just their wallets. They strive to be elite and offer up the most cutting edge products, yet they are not elitist in their philosophy and pricing. This captures people hearts as well as their minds Mariano - and so people express as such. This approach is also forcing positive change amongst other companies, and that is another huge service to even the fans/customers of other companies and all future artists as well. So what you are seeing is simply people expressing their version of "Hey RED, I get what your doing, and I really appreciate it."
Very simple to understand and logical no?

Some people get confused by it, as they just see/presume RED is just another typical company. And I would thoroughly agree that it makes no sense to have slavish loyalty to a company whose number one priority is clearly to serve it's share holders. Some will still attach to any brands and products they use, because they serve as an ego/identity enhancement. This is madness in any form. But RED is an Atypical company. And it makes complete sense to have loyalty and appreciation for a company that is the forerunner in actually giving a shit about you and your needs. So it's no great mystery when people express as such.

Hope that helps.

Looking forward to reading your mantra one day :patriot:

Well put

It is because ...

I'm going to assume that your post was meant to be a genuine response to Mariano, and not just you being a wanker.

However, I think you missed his point.
Nevermind.

14k plus lens for basic shooting package

14k plus lens for basic shooting package

Dear Red Camera,

I had hoped that Epic would be pointed at feature film crews with Asssistant camera people and DIT people
and Scarlet would be small form factor, and full auto mode functionality.

I can't afford it. I wish I could. It looks so promising.

However, my economics are not based on the business model of a financed film.
They are based on discretionary personal income and privately financed film making as a personal art.

The idea of scarlet was that this might put digital film in my range, however, the price point, and possibly the moving target of all the features have moved this out of my range.

I want the small form factor and the full auto functionality of a prosumer camera, not a big complex system requiring a DIT person and Assistant Camera persons.

I kind of like the small sensor to get more intrinsic depth of field. The human eye sensor is like a half inch or 2/3.

I read this really interesting article in Creative Cow about resolution. The point of the article is we can't even see 4k. Percieved Image quality as a function of resolution breaks down at a certain point. The Thompson Viper at High Framerates drops to much lower K's of resolution yet the picture looks great.

I am actually considering this new Sony prosumer 3D camera that shoots on AVCHD. Its about $1400 with lens.

All these codecs are interconvertible. You just have to get it into an AVID and then the digital processing can make almost anything useable.
Maybe thats wishful thinking, but I can't afford to find out if I'm wrong.

I would have liked to try to teach myself this workflow, and to have seen for my self the truth about its quality and usability,
but I can't spend 15k plus lens for a personal documentary package.

Thank you for the education, but, I don't think I can go this path unless I get an investor to back my feature film project.

The feature is called "The 13'th Amendment" and its a black comedy about the amendment that ended slavery becomes the basis for its reinstitution....

but thats another story.

Sincerely
John Mark Pirtle

For crying out loud! You really DON'T understand what I wrote. You're still equating two different thoughts.

Some people were nervous because Epic-S is not on the roadmap. When asked, Jim wrote, "If you are nervous, you are not committed." Yet, the worrying persisted. So, unless he's misleading us, which I DON'T think he is in any way:

1) An S35 is coming because Jim hinted at it.

2) It may be in the Scarlet family...we'll find out on Nov.3. If I'm wrong about it being a Scarlet...

3) It's still coming because Jim hinted at it.

Simple.

If you don't get that, I don't know what else to say.

EDIT: Perhaps it would help if I reworded the sentence to read, "So, unless PEOPLE think he's misleading us, which I DON'T think he is in any way..." Because I know things change a lot at RED, I don't take the possibility of an S35 not happening as a sign of being misled, but some might. My post was always pro-Jim, pro-Jim's word and, therefore, pro-S35.

EDIT to the previous edit: I guess there are three possibilities for why the worrying persisted about an S35 camera even after Jim reassured the Epic-S crowd they'd be taken care of.

1) People missed Jim's reassuring posts altogether.

2) People read them but didn't get the meaning.

3) People got the meaning but remained skeptical anyway. I don't know why they would but these were the people I was addressing regarding Jim being misleading.

Again, that statement had nothing to do with Scarlet or November 3.

I don't mind being disagreed with but I hate to be misunderstood.

Brian, you absolutely deserve the following:

YOU WERE RIGHT! I WAS WRONG!!

AND I'M GALD YOU WERE RIGHT!!!

Thanks, Peter. Although it wasn't really necessary, I appreciate the gesture.

Don't sweat it...I have my moments but I'm also probably wrong just as often, which pretty much equals a coin toss.

I would have liked to try to teach myself this workflow, and to have seen for my self the truth about its quality and usability, but I can't spend 15k plus lens for a personal documentary package.

Nobody's forcing you to buy a camera package to shoot a feature film. I bet 50,000 feature films have been shot with rented equipment. You may find it makes more sense to rent a camera package for 4-5 weeks, rather than spending $10,000 or more buying a camera. I'm positive there are lots of DP/camera owners out there who will make you a reasonable combined deal on their services and gear.

Note that even $10,000 or $20,000 won't get you a full lens package and all the accessories, let along lighting, gaffer, and grip gear. It's the incidentals that kill you with this stuff. Buying an editing system makes sense, but with cameras changing so radically right now, it might be best to take a wait and see attitude.

Great movies, TV shows, and shorts have been shot on HD cameras, digital still cameras, 2K cameras, 4K cameras, and (yes) even film. There's lots of choices out there, and there'll be even more after the first of the year. I'm glad that Red continues to offer filmmakers more choices. Jannard warned six months ago that the new camera would be a lot more than $5,000, so I'm not sure what all the complaining around here is about. To me, Scarlet is a perfectly viable option.
