  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Expectations...

If anyone is disappointed in the Scarlet Nov. 3rd announcement... they suck. And we won't lose one minute of sleep. The announcement is just too good.

Jim

I'm thinking Canon people will be sucking, then :-P

...RED BROTHERS, RED SISTERS, RED COMRADES….

I put forward the motion that we do not speak about K, $, or fps ANYMORE!!!

Just about every possible combination that you can think of has already been mention (probably); There is absolutely no value in speculating the K vs. $ vs. fps (design ratios). Clearly as indicated by Jim this seems to be totally missing the point.

I vote that we pack up any more discussions of K,$,fps.

This makes sense. I'll admit to being one that has gotten caught up with all of the heavily generated excitement here. (Especially in the past couple of weeks).

I know there is no one more excited than Jim.

The difficulty with Scarlet is that it can cover such a wide range of markets. Disruptive technology tends to do this. It reminds me more of the RED ONE than EPIC.

All I know for certain is that I'll be extremely happy with whatever Scarlet ends up being. See ya Nov. 3rd. :-)

I fully expect Nov. 3rd to play out like an Apple product release.
• A month or two for internet forums to make predictions and guesses at specs & working themselves into a lather
• The announcement will be made with 10's of 1000's paying attention including many who you never knew gave a darn
• The specs/price will be immediately panned as 'meh' all over the internet with the occasional blog post blasting it as inadequate & over priced
• A few months pass and we've all bought and are using the thing, happy as clams

Except that, despite the fact that everyone buys and uses them, Apple products ARE inadequate and overpriced. The first iPhone didn't have MMS for god's sake!

... The last thing I would want to see is a full-frame Canon 5D Mark iii come out with 2-4k at 3500 dollars and the Scarlet be announced with a 2/3" sensor at over 10k.

Judging from the new EOS-1D X, I do not think you have much to fear. It is expected to cost around 8000 dollars, and will be able to shoot RAW at up to 12 frames/s. That speed is possible because they have TWO of their newest Digic-5 processors in it. Video is the old compressed kind, and max 30 frames/s 1080P. I would be very surprised if they come with a cheaper camera that has better performance when the new 1D is not shipping yet.

Anythiing that will be released and available in 12 days would have been locked down A LONG TIME ago. This is how product development works.
Not according to Jim Jannard:
3 weeks to go... and things have already changed several times since the date was announced. Exciting! I can't wait to see where we end up on Nov. 3rd.

OK.

Somebody mentioned “out of the box color”. In the MF world that is a VERY big deal. Jim keeps going on about we’re getting the RED library together. So there are many different types of technical “library” that one can have. So it may be that there are some VERY nice goodies (software/profiles) and even more didactic materials and other “know how goodies” that come from the best in the industry.

RED BROTHERS, RED SISTERS, RED COMRADES….

And maybe even sensor size???

In terms of the laws of combinatorics this one has already been done to death many times over, surely?

Let’s use our amazing speculative imaginations to talk about something else IF indeed there is anything left to actually talk about…?

Yours VERY respectfully,

Eric

[It’s a free country (where I am) but I will willingly abstain from any discussion of K, $, fps]

[I’m expecting a huge tumble weed moment on this one….]

Yes Please! I've been saying this for over a month! It will accomplish nothing and we only have days left anyway.

My only hopes are that she falls right around $6k.. and is what it was always going to be..

... I believe it will be in the Scarlet family, however that works out, along with other offerings. I might be wrong.

This part you are simply making up... RED specifically moved the Scarlet S35 to the Epic family and, for all we know, it is still planned for release as the Epic-S some time in the future. There is no reason to believe you are anything but wrong except for the remote possibility that exists because anything could have changed. Given the reasons they moved it to the Epic family; primarily the horsepower needed to process the larger data stream from the larger, higher resolution sensor, there is simply no reason to expect they would move it back to the Scarlet chassis and boards.

People are inclined to speculate however they like. No one, including Jim, apparently, is going to change that. November 3rd will be interesting and, thank God, will (hopefully?) put an end to the WAGs that are peppered throughout REDUser. :banghead:

I believe Scarlet will be 3 things on November 3rd:

1) The best 2/3" camera ever made.
2) $6k for a complete kit.
3) Ready to ship in mass quantities.

Any other surprises will be unrelated to Scarlet.
You may be right, but other than a $6K complete kit (because of a bunch of factors beyond Red's control, I'm now expecting a sizable price increase), nothing Scarlet-related in your list would add up to the most significant date in Red history. Jim has alluded to a number of changes to Scarlet -- some have to be pretty big to get Jim so excited (maybe too excited -- his enthusiasm, the hype, and the one-month lag between the announcement announcement and the actual announcement have inadvertently contributed to the wild speculation). Granted, the camera announced nearly two years ago (plus HDRx, added about a year later) would still be a great camera, but I would find it hard to believe Scarlet's specs haven't changed significantly, given this level of excitement. Not even Epic's release received this sort of buildup.

Not according to Jim Jannard:

Hardly means the sensor specs have changed... most likely software/firmware capabilities such as tweaking a little more out of HDRx or a little higher frame rate. Or, the pricing structure or the package components or the packaging or... but, let's face it, you don't finish a sensor re-design and 3 weeks later have it in mass production.

I never said anything about the sensor. David Battistella said everything would be locked down. As Red has proven time and again, firmware changes can yield significant improvements and new features -- which, for any other manufacturer (**cough**Sony**cough**) would require buying a several-thousand-dollar upgrade (F3, anyone?) or a whole new camera. But who knows, except Jim and some others at Red? I was just quoting Jim, and he more than hinted that things are (or were) changing.

I love this freakin' company!! Instead of false promises, we get real talk directly from the owner. I think all should follow in these footsteps. I can't wait to lay my money down on Scarlet. I have heard only few problems from some RED cameras in the past (mostly rentals, but that is to be expected with this type of equipment, new technology, etc) but afterr months on the forum here, it looks like all issues are quickly addressed and even more so, some are directly responded to by Jim himself.

What more can you ask for in a company? Try texting Arri to get a response from the owner directly. Anyone in the world of digital film and video currently needs to realize the future while bright can only offer so many things. The resolution race is not over, but even the new Canon 1Dx (not comparing it to RED, just mentioning a company as large as Canon and one who waited so long, produced a new flagship with less megapixels than the last) isn't offering much better image resolution or quality but more camera features, autofocus improvements, etc. We all need to keep it real. Video and Digital Cinema is at a high level; as high of a level as most need right now; not necessarily a plateau, but improvements do not necessarily need to be made on image quality at the moment, just real features on exporting options for RAW, etc. I'm sure RED has that ready to go. Red has the ball on resolution for sure and is completely competitive on every other level now with the EPIC, etc.

What more can people expect in a camera body at this size and this cost. The RED ONE has freakin' footage that can play on an IMAX already people. Come on! Jim, you the man for KEEPING IT REAL.!!!

I thought Jim said that if Scarlet disappoints, he'd retire. Now he won't lose any sleep over it? Wow, he must be confident!

It sounds like what Jim is saying is that if it is possible to bring to market on a realistic engineering standpoint, and price point, it will be brought !! This statement from Jim about realistic expectations is great if you think about it. it may not mean that everyone's wildest cinema fantasies are coming to life at the moment, but it means for sure that RED isn't holding anything back !!!! That is great to know.

Not according to Jim Jannard:

This one does me in.

That's it.

I actually think I am done on Reduser.

Catch y'all later.

Good luck with everything, everyone. I hope you all get the camera you want and need and fulfill your dreams.

David

Yeah, I know. I was joking.
