  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet (and shipping) announcement Nov. 3rd...

At this point Red is just showing off and doing there Touchdown dance.

I don't think they are judging their opponent very correctly. Canon vs Red? Red with a good amount of feature movies under their belt, including movies with Best Cinematography Nominations, with many many many more to come, and Canon with "Like Crazy"... :-\

I bet they are going to feel real silly come November 3rd. :-\

Sorry you mistook what I was saying David. 1/2.3, which is close to base professional 1/2 has beem available for a fraction of the price of prosumer 1/3 for years. Consumer less than $5k has various formats around asp-c, 4/3rds, and I think 2/3rds/16mm for a while, for less than preferable $2k many of these are available, and you can get a gh2 for considerable less than $1k. How is 2/3rds bigger then 4/3rds or asp-c consumer? They have raised the size of cheap sensors to fit more megapixels on without shrinking them too much, apart from other benefits, and s35 like sizes are already included, on $599 Sony nex-5n for example.

Forgot, the people that do the chipsets for the $100 fullhd cameras announced a powerful Android based video chipset last November that can do video close to 3k resolution, I expect higher thus or next year. Nothing compared to raw 4k scarlet, but just that is how far along 4k is the future is, and how far the industry is behind, even the cheapest quality camera makers are staring down the 4k barrel.

I posted this idea then but it got ignored, then deleted. I understand why as Jim eluded to in a recent post saying that Canon will release something based on where they think Red is going. "that changed a long time ago" I think were his words. I could be wrong but I will welcome the changes if I am correct.

Personally, I would be very happy and satisfied if the Scarlet came out as the 3K, 120-150fps, 2/3" sensor, fixed lens model with HDRx that has been discussed. It's a dream camera. If it is priced around the $6K mark for the base package, even better. Who could ask for more? :001_cool:

2K for $2k :) ? The other guys don't know what they are doing. If there was true competition, with thier budgets, they could produce 8k to 32k cameras by now, even if it was a big box. Working mpeg4 JVC Shd camera prototype was shown off several years ago, but where has it been. There is no real competition normally, that is why we need your Red and Scarlet Jim, to show people what they are missing out on.

Sounds familiar but I cannot.... wait... now I remember. It was the Criplet camera from RED I saw on my trip through the alternate universes during my summer vacation.
Strange things are going on elsewhere I tell you. Anyway its good to be home.
 
Okay, my prediction...

Scarlet becomes the sub-10K fixed lens Alexa-beater (3k Dragon)
Red One Dragon becomes the 4.5k Alexa (better on all counts)
Epic, well is the future milestone... 7k Dragon up-grade to all M- and X- buyers

(okay, I dropped the logic on that last one)
 
My Final Prediction for Scarlet: It will have the ability to shoot video and stills and be announced on Nov. 3rd!

You mean high Mp on Scarlet Fixed in still mode? then it will be my dream camera with a 16 MP fixed DSMC Fixed Scarlet ,

Scarlet will be a beast of a camera, but I think that is pure hyperbole about it beating the Alexa. I love Red and what they're doing, but there's no way a fixed lens 2/3" sensor under $10k is going to beat out the Alexa for movie making. The ability to change lenses and get shallower DOF and more artistic/stylistic choices alone put the Alexa above it, IMO. The Epic-S will compare more favorably to the Alexa, though.
 
Scarlet will NOT be fixed...WAY too much has happened between that original concept and the present day for Red to release a fixed lens camera.

A few things I have lost the posts for due to session crash:

Somebody somewhere mentioned hitting the nail on the head and the post being deleted. I also had this happen when I asked confirmation on a specification that was confirmed then deleted. Things change.

People complain about h264, and sometimes 4/3rds, but check this out (I have maintained that 24 mbs h264 for fullhdp60 is inadequate, it should be minimal 36mbs, preferably 48-72mbs).
