I need therapy...

Jim

I'm left without words. I'm truly sorry this unfolds the way it does... The only good thing about it is, that it has ended now... Except for the court sessions.
I wish you all the best Jim. Maybe if possible set sail for Fiji for a few days! I wish we could do something to help.
All the best! We will stay by your side!

Patrick

Hey Jim, come up to the valley and I'll take you to Angeles Range. No better therapy than sending a few hundred rounds of 7.62x39 downrange. My treat (I have a couple of those bleeding zombie targets too!)

Legal issues are soooo draining. I'm sorry you have to go through this. Don't know if you're a man of faith but I'll say a prayer for you, your team and everyone else who is dealing with this drama, including the employees at Arri.

I will not get into Michael's acts - I'm sure they will speak for themselves and it sounds like he has a hard road ahead of him. Actions... Consequences.

When I was fresh in the industry and looking for a break, Michael spent a lot of time with me and was one of the few people who really went out of his way to share knowledge and introduce me to the "old dogs" in the community. For no reason other than to just pay it forward. When my father died suddenly and unexpectedly almost two years ago, Michael was proactively kind to me in ways I will never forget. When somebody reaches out to you when you're that far down and helps pull you up, it stays with you.

This is not to justify or excuse his actions. People do all kinds of crazy stupid sh*t that have real and awful consequences for themselves and others. But it does not define an entire life or negate past actions of kindness and generosity.

For Jim and the RED team - one of my personal mottoes I think applies here... "the best revenge is living well."

The whole damned thing sucks.

Lucas

Lucas, thank you so much for this. I'm a total outsider/wannabee, but I've lived long enough to know that few people outside of characters in poorly written/directed movies are one-dimensional. Now I understand some of the depth of the pain others who know him are feeling. I also deeply appreciate your positive words of wisdom.

Love the motto Lucas.

This is very sad for everyone involved - on so many levels. However if this does go deeper then these initial charges and this one individual, there may be others that require a well defined lesson on living well.

From Deadline...

"Industry veteran Michael Bravin admitted today that while working for German film and TV camera powerhouse ARRI he hacked into the files of LA-based rival Band Pro Film and Digital, where he had worked for 15 years. Bravin, who moved to ARRI as VP market development in 2010, pleaded guilty to using the name and password of CEO and president Amnon Band to access files used in interstate commerce. Emails from several industry firms were accessed during the hacking, including those of Red Digital Cinema founder Jim Jannard..."

This situation hits me hard on many levels...

One of the companies I held in the highest esteem now has left me shattered.

The magnitude of the betrayal is really hard to comprehend.

The situation forces a reaction that I never would have considered a possibility.

I am devastated. Given the facts, it is not likely I will sleep for a month.

Jim

WOW... JUST WOW... Truly and deeply sorry Jim, that this is happening to a MAN as yourself, one which I have come to greatly appreciate not only for the Business side of things...

It is with my best wishes for this not to cause you too much stress to literally make things worst not just in perspective of what has happened here Business wise, but concern here lies to your health,
were I know form direct experience and a weak heart, that such things as this, if taken too personal, can really damage beyond repair your health, so please, act upon on it, get your best attorneys at work,
but do so while trying your best to maintain your cool and your Heart rate and stress at a low...

We can do nothing to assist you... However you should know, that if there was anything we could do, we would... NO HESITATION!!

If this comes down to... I AM READY TO SHOW MY LOYALTY... and SALE OFF every piece of gear I own of ARRI, including my most absolute BELOVED GLASS...
The Master Primes... along with all other ARRI gear... THIS I WOULD DO FOR YOU Jim... Just ask and I'll do it in a second!!

Only one man can play Jim:

Joseph_D__Kucan-1.jpg

Ha, this is Joe Kucan. He is a friend of mine. He would do it!

I think to help make everyone feel a bit better, especially Jim and the Red Team, we should share moments of great kindness that we have encountered since joining in on his vision. I'll start:

I received my camera back in the days when little was available immediately from the store. Having only a single 8GB card and needing a HD drive nearly immediately, I was very disappointed to have my camera arrive without one. I went to these very boards and asked for help. Pawel kindly not only sold me one of his at cost, but sent me an unused one he had. He saved my butt, and things since then have continued to get better every time I have pulled the camera out.

While I realize that what has happened may have had an immense impact on Red, and specifically some of their secrets, and given there competitors a chance to respond, with all due respect to their competitors, there is no way I would have chanced anything on another forum full of strangers. You have built us a home, and I think we all have been robbed, but we will get through it and we still thank you Jim.

1+ one on what Lucas said.

Michael had also tried to help me when I was newly unemployed.

Michael was very complex man, his interest were all over the map.

He could also be arrogant, not in a rude mean way (as silly as that sounds),
but in a way of defending his point on technical issues. What I am saying he
struck me as someone who could be blinded in the moment and sometimes
maybe not see the full landscape, but then other times he would concede if
you argued hard enough. Like I said a complex man.

So this is why it is really SAD...

I bought multiple cameras, lenses, decks, over a million dollars
worth of equipment from Band Pro when he worked. I liked dealing
with him, although at the begining I thought he was arrogant as hell,
but then I understood it (like I described above).

That is all small potatoes.

Understand that this is not just federal, this can also fall under international trade laws and such.
This then all becomes extremely time consuming, drawn out mind numbing crap.

It would be something if it only was just state, but this will have international repercussion legally I think.

Ultimately this will take time and resources, and it's really hard to just let get swept under the rug.

Man this sucks the more I think about it.

I understand what you are trying to say here and you are doing it respectfully, but that starts to get weird in terms of implications if you really think it through.

Best not to speculate too much around these sorts of things.

David

Huh? Just the opposite. When you think it through it really starts to make sense. In fact, my immediate and only thought when that camera was stolen was corporate espionage; it was only a question of whether it was a Japanese or German company.

10,000 Epics at $50K a pop is a 1/2 billion dollars. The film industry is not expanding by that much. Rather, it is money that is coming from someone else's pocket. The RED revolution, while it is great for filmmakers, also represents a huge loss of market share for traditional film camera makers as well as video camera makers. That kind of money and the devastating loss of market and revenue is well beyond the threshold for corporate espionage.

Anybody who has seen an episode of Law & Order can predict that if M. Bravin has plead out to a lessor charge, then there are some bigger fish that are about to fry.

Oh and that article is wrong. If you read the plea agreement, Bravin has to pay $20,000 restitution. If the judge lowers that, Justice can appeal.

This is such a sad reality of what has become of businesses today. This bigger question will be, how did Michael pull this off and what were his motifs? I doubt he did this for kicks. There is unfortunately similar cases going on with Apple and their suppliers. No wonder RED is trying to keep as much production under one roof. As Steve Jobs once said. "this is a big bag of hurt"
