  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Reminds me of Robert Duval's line in Apocalypse Now, "Someday this war will be over."

I don't think that will be the case in this instance. Conventional thinking is well entrenched and consolidates its position even after advances are made.

i feel like we are going to be very surprised with whats in store for the Scarlet. I feel like they have some tricks up their sleeve.

Thanks for the clarification Jim, however, I'm not sure it was totally necessary. You were clearly referring to war in a positive sense -- not just in ideology -- but also friendly (albeit intense) competition. Nothing wrong with that, and in this case, the competition Red has brought to the table has already woken some of these other companies up from their slumber of obsolescence and slow releases that have held the industry back.

Who wins? More than any one company, it's the CONSUMER -- or in our case, the professional customer -- who benefits from the radically increased innovation and quality that results from this "war."

Moreover, anybody who takes issue with that word either needs to chill out or wake up ... because you listen to any of the great business minds, like Steve Jobs for instance, and it just takes a minute or so before you get the feeling that he sees Apple very much at "war" with Microsoft, Google, Amazon and others. But just like Jim, Steve's "war" was very much about standing for something greater, not just trying to "win" or make more sales. That's a big difference.

Sorry guys, like it or not, many great achievers think like this. You can look outside business as well. It was the "war" between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird single-handedly saved basketball. Do you that Michael Jordan didn't feel he was going to war every time he stepped onto the court with the Pistons or any other worthy opponent? It was a key part of his drive and success.

War -- i.e. competition and racing toward a higher ideal or achievement -- is good, as long as there is no cheating, no foul play, and ethics are maintained.

We all can clearly see that Red maintains the highest possible standards in that area, first and foremost through it's treatment of customers, and it's only logical to assume that the war Jim is referring to is perfectly good, and focused on delivering maximum value to those in our shoes. This is a GREAT thing.

In fact, it's the best thing to happen to filmmaking in decades.
 
Couldn't be more with you, but I think you already know that, Jim. And I love how you answer us, without answering us directly at times. Hahahaha.

Thanks for making our dream camera a reality. There aren't too many individuals that I hold in higher regard than yourself. I remember watching this message board back in '06, being reluctant to join and wondering what your "angle" was. Sorry, but there's a skeptic in all of us, and what you proposed was out there. Who would have thought that we would get to know one another, come to understand each other's personalities and philosophies, and contribute to the design of the most advanced imaging system on the planet, and do so all within a virtual space. We truly live in a great time.

The RED One has enabled me to achieve things that would not have been possible (well, not with as much grace anyway) with lower resolution acquisition. I am certainly on the front lines, and I couldn't be better armed at this point. And I intend to do you proud. Seriously.

We should all fight against poverty and see everything clearly either it is 1080p, 4k or 40 k we should be able to see it......

Sigh, I feel like the people who don't understand what Jim's message with this post is.completely inept. It's fairly obvious exactly what he means. War between companies is good. Period.

Then after that we can be ready for the battle and probably concur the competition.

Already I warned about this issue during the last NAB (then was banned).

Now the treat becomes a real.

BTW, I'm very experienced warrior, war strategist and war analyst.

from the battlefield front line...we know that we have been at war for 4 years. we come to set because the DP, or the Producer or the director or the client or the agency wants us there. the others don't, we make our stand at the beginning of the day with words. the lights get set, the grips cut the light, the actors get in place, we set the stop and we shoot. the drives return to our carts and we extract the magic from the card/drive/ssd and we put our grade on the footage and play it out fully debayered from the rocket and suddenly the doubters are no where to be found, the set turns and by the end of the day we have fans not insurgents.

this scenario has played out over and over again for four years, we will continue to battle on the front line knowing that the home office has a plan and will send in back up and reinforcements when they are ready...you keep making bombs we will keep up the battle for hearts and minds.

He he, yes some WARS, are definitely not only good, but a necessity of the Strong good intentioned, in order to protect those that can't protect themselves, and or fight in favor of Good, and or against something WRONG!!

If you think war is controversial try peace!

Have a look at my avatars at red user and they generally make a statement about love or peace. I can tell you that the concept of peace offends people as much as the concept of war, but that does not prevent me from taking a stand and having conviction and a point of view.

Not enough people have a strong point of view or strong convictions, many people ride the fence to be able to figure out how to butter their bread.

Pacifists can be at war, against the kinds of things that Jim has mentioned.

The overall point is that passion stirs people and pushes them toward a point if view.

Having the balls to state how you really feel is rare these days so if jim wanted to use the word war (in a correct context for how he feels about what he is doing) then he should.

We should all pick up these EPIC cameras and make images and movies with this kind of passion and conviction. We all come up against the kinds of things Jim is warring about in our daily lives. Those things need to be talked about more openly and more often.

I'm reading Jims words as, "I'm willing to take a stand and have convictions."

That passion drives RED and this community.

I cannot help but think of this song. It inspires me when I'm in a middle of those challenging projects, when facing phrases like "impossible", or " you can't do it", or "Who do you think you are?" . Go Jim, go Red!
