So I thought this would make an interesting discussion for all the film nerds on this site. It's real simple, just name some actors and actresses that don't get the respect or opportunities from Hollywood that they deserve.

Here are a few of my top picks:

Actors:

1. Guy Pearce - what an amazing actor and yet he remains virtually unknown by mainstream audiences. If you have seem Memento, L.A Confidential and The Proposition, you know this guy has some serious acting chops.

2. Chiwetel Ejiofor - I'm a Serenity fan so I am biased but he is seriously good and has not had the opportunity to really shine. He is also amazing in Children of Men which is one of my favorites.

3. Ron Perlman - I know that some will disagree with me but I just love this guy and I wish I had more opportunities to see him on the big screen.

4. Sam Rockwell - I loved Moon and I know that many others loved the film and Sam's performance. Why is this guy not a bigger star? He was also great in Matchstick Men and Choke.

5. Nathan Fillion - Did I mention that I was a Firefly/Serenity fan. Get this guy more roles!

6. Chris Cooper - He was great in the October Sky, American Beauty, Adaptation and the Bourne Identity. He is one of those actors that mainstream audiences will recognize but will never remember his name.

7. Gary Oldman - Most people will see him on screen and say "Hey, that's Gordon from The Dark Knight and Sirius Black from Harry Potter!". Those who know can tell you that he is so much more than that.

8. Idris Elba - This guy blows me away every time I see him on screen, which of course, is not often enough.

9. Richard Jenkins - I thought he should have won an Academy Award for The Visitor and he blew me away in Let Me In.

10. Ryan Gosling - 2011 and 2012 will be big years for Ryan Gosling but seriously, why is this guy not an A-list star by now?

11. Jackie Earle Haley - I don't think Watchmen was a great film but Jackie was shockingly good as Rorschach. He was so good in fact that he made the movie.

12. Michael Parks - I'm so glad that Tarantino loves him and put him in Kill Bill. He is getting positive buzz for Red State but frankly, it is too little too late.

13. Paul Bettany - I see him as a more talented and less famous version of Jude Law. (married to Jennifer Connelly who is also painfully underrated)

Actresses:

1. Jennifer Connelly - What a gorgeous and talented actress. You don't really see her in much anymore but she can still act the socks off many other women who get way more attention. The Rocketeer, House of Sand and Fog, A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream and Dark City are all excellent examples of her unquestionable talent.

2. Ellen Burstyn - Requiem for a Dream, Holy $#!%!!, enough said.

3. Naomi Watts - Beautiful, talented and criminally underrated.

4. Catherine Keener - Loved in her almost everything I saw her in. She has a great performance range.

5. Laura Linney - So many spectacular performances and still no Oscar.

6. Emily and Zooey Deschanel - both are great and don't get the attention they deserve.

7. Thandie Newton - She was the best part of Crash IMO.

Post away but please, don't attack someone's personal choices.

Great choice on Idris Elba! He's probably my favourite actor. His portrayal of Stringer Bell on The Wire is unreal. In fact, you could just add the entire cast of The Wire. I would like to add Wendell Pierce, Maggie Cheung and Frances Conroy. Not really "underrated" but often overlooked - Juliette Binoche is arguably the most accomplished actor working today.

Chiwetel Ejiofor - watch "The Shadow Line" miniseries from the UK, shot on RED, and Chiwetel does a fantastic job with his starring role.

Graeme

Ben Foster - Alpha dog
Jason Statham - although he does a lot of films as an action star - he should do a "serious drama" cuz he can act and its a shame we dont get too see sides of him.

I didn't like that Crash. But did love this Crash from 1996.

Crank High Voltage made me go get my first HD camera and start shooting short films again. I absolutely loved it. They did the shaky bits with 6 hd cameras mounted on a semi circular camera rig, and then cut between all 6 cams with slightly different angles to get that frantic jumpy look.

I second Ben Foster. He is extremely talented. His performance in "The Messenger" was remarkable, and he stole the scenes he was in during "3:10 to Yuma". Noomi Rapace is another favorite. "Daisy Diamond" was quite a powerful film.

Chiwetel Ejiofor - I saw him as Othello in London 2 years ago along with Ewan MacGregor - he was great. Also a big fan of Firefly and Nathan Fillion. Also Sam Rockwell and Moon was great, also Jennifer Connelly - wow and Zooey Deschanel. All good choices there, Andrew. Also how about Don Cheadle in Hotel Rwanda or Reign Over Me.

100% agree on Gary Oldman and Ben Foster. I suggest also Mark Ruffalo and Rahda Mitchell.

Michael Shannon is one of the finest actors working today. With the right prep work he would be masterful as "The Judge" in "Blood Meridian." Ray Winstone is another fantastic actor.

Great list Andrew, this took some thought. Some I don't recognize and will have to check out ... more than ever, great acting is being diluted by mediocre acting and it's nice to know the diamonds in the rough.

I was working on this list pretty late at night and it was hard to cover all of them but I agree that Ben Foster and Michael Shannon should be added to this list. I would also add Ed Harris, Viggo Mortensen and Adrian Brody as well. I also thought about adding Michael C. Hall and Bryan Cranston to this list by they are not really visible in the film industry because of their television work.

I agree Richard that Don Cheadle should be on this list as well. Hotel Rwanda is a stunning achievement no doubt.

Chris Cooper, dark, uncomfortable, gives me the creeps. Somehow get the idea his own life is as twisted as his characters. Great in specific roles.

Gary Oldman, his best role, IMO, was Fifth Element, the evil genius. Enjoyed his performance immensely, wry, twisted humorous character.

Thandie Newton, yikes, MI2 I think it was, the Flamenco scene, if you didn't fall in love with her there, then something is just wrong.

+1 for John Turturro, he was at his very best in Brother Where Art Thou. Now there's a piece that never received its full due.

Hugh Jackman. His performance in "The Fountain" > All.

For the men:
Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Brick was awesome)
&
Justin Timberlake (Alpha Dogs was spot on) Much better actor than he gets credit for.
&
Emile Hirsch

For the Ladies:
Mireille Enos
&
Carey Mulligan
&
Parker Posey
&
India Ennenga
