  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Underrated Actors and Actresses

Ill agree with Justin Timberlake. I thought he actually did really well in Southland Tales, and did phenomenal in The Social Network.

Also, Carey Mulligan. An Education was amazing and so was Never Let Me Go.

Would I come across as too much of a sci fi geek (she's mainly known in the USA for her work on Babylon 5 & Lost) if I mentioned Mira Furlan?

Mike

I would have to add Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond), Viggo Mortenson (LOTR, The Road), Ralph and Joseph Fiennes(The English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, respectively), Julie Delpy (Before Sunrise/Sunset), and Cate Blanchett (benjamin Button, Elizabeth/The Golden Age)... So many more.

I'm seeing a lot of folks here who are very highly regarded. Just to stay on topic, Andrew asked for your UNDERRATED actors and actresses...

Although the man has a good career, I do feel that Jason Isaacs is underrated. I saw a doco-drama that was made by Leo Regan called Scars at a festival quite a few years back, where Isaacs basically played out a scripted - to camera interview - of an Ex London Gangster. He was absolutely phenomenal. Probably one of the best performances I have ever seen. He has played some good secondary roles but he is incredibly talented actor - if given the roles to play.

I do think though that people get confused between underrated and secondary, minor character qualities. Some actors are great actors but are destined for supporting roles. IMDB's list of underrated actors are full of such people. They are respected as really good actors and in many ways I would consider them to be stronger than a lot of the leading actors working today. This may be the case where beauty take precedence (The exception to this rule is Charlize Theron, after her role in Monster - she proven herself completely).

I would add, off the top of my head: Udo Kier, Vincent D'Onofrio, Alan Cumming, James Caviezel. But there are so many.

I guess it depends on your definition of "underrated" but I'll add Ellen Page. Between Hard Candy and Juno she made me a fan.

I like Merriam-Webster. to rate too low; underestimate If you have been nominated for an Oscar we'd have to leave you off the list. How's that for a start?

Ellen had very good performances in those films for sure.

Great choices from everyone. Sam Rockwell in Iron Man 2 had me rofl. Anyone remember him in the Ninja turtles movie?

Viggo is a very underrated leading man. Remember him as the crippled wire-wearing addict in Carlito's Way? Brilliant! He can play characters and the stoic leading roles he's known for.

Just watched Never Let Me Go last night. She was indeed good. But what blew me away was the cinematography. Dark non-contrasty scenes were crystal clear with high resolution and the colors were just there. Not vivid bold colors like in The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, just excellent color rendition. Looked like it was shot on Arri lenses with Kodak film, based on the credits. Damn, the Brits have been putting out some amazing film lately. Great stories, good acting, and brilliant cinematography. Sorry, off topic a bit, but had to share.
