  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If you use a DSMC...

This discussion takes me back to Art School when I was minoring in Filmmaking. After screening one of my shorts, a kid in my Film class said "that was beautiful...you can really tell from your film that you're a photographer..."

All I could think was... "aren't all cinematographers photographers."

+1 for MoPho

Not all good cinematographers make good photographers, and vice versa, in the stricter sense of the titles. And a great movie might lack even one great single frame.
And a fabulous still might not be able to bear the weight of what Tarkovsky called the "time pressure" in montage - what Eisenstein called "montage of attraction".

Although being one or the other is not a bad point of departure as far as entering the other world is concerned. That's for sure.

I'm shooting a movie next weekend on an Epic, I think I'll credit myself as a MoPho instead of a DP :) haha

And don't forget to also change your title if you shoot 300 fps ! :biggrin5:

SloMoPho...

When I was a kid, I was at the grocery store and this woman got into a fight with a cashier. She walked off in the end, screaming back to him, "AIN'T GOT NO TIME FO DA MOFO!!"

That's all I can think of now :) haha!

....I will be once I get my Scarlet!

Thanks Jeff

I dont think I was ever confused about different laws governing Stills from Motion...Just that there have been different business models and practices within the two fields . As the businesses merge there will need to be an adjustment to each and there-in lies the confusion. Just need to refigure my contracts.

Don't get it. Maybe its the producer in me, but stills have ALWAYS been pulled from the motion picture, haven't they? And they always will be. For publicity of the film. For use in marketing and merchandising and what not. Don't see any new business model here, or any confusion at all. Unless you are a footage firm that wants to carve up usage rights. If you are a DP on a film and want to start talking about still rights... well... I don't know where that leads. What am I missing here?

Maybe I'm not looking at this from a current still photographer pov, and is now a motion+still photographer... but that's not a motion picture DP situation, and not a world I know much about.

Ok so let's take a minute to get everything cleared.

DSMC users Are CinemaPhotographer(tm) or cinephotographer. In the field, they call themselves MoPhographers or Phomographers... They shoot Mofo's and when they shoot loooots of mofo's per second they are Slowmographers ! :mad2:

:w00t: ok I'm out !

PS: And Ketch is a super ninja ! ^^

...PS: And Ketch is a super ninja ! ^^

He he, with 7 different disciplines I have managed to get many belts, (including my favorite "Just Cavalli' Italian leather one),
but Ninja discipline is the absolute most difficult one to master, so even so I never give up, I just simply left that Art to some one a bit more
flexible in their training schedule, while I kicked (...and got Kicked) A%$#@ in many other disciplines... ;)

But I guess I kind of realize I am not as Bad A^%#@ as I used to, and completely out of training since I managed to get shot while trying to disarm a
tief during a house invasion few years ago... :(

So now in Florence I will be back in heavy training, well, health permitting... ;)

Definitely not, I've been shooting for just over 10 years and I still think I've got sooo much to learn! Roger Deakins, he's a cinematographer, me I try!

I like Cinephotographer(R)...rolls off the tongue a little better

and...Cinephotography(R)...BOOM.

Motionographer is real term though...as I work with many of them ( those motion graphics dudes)

So it was Billy who came up with the simpler 'Cinephotography'! Bravo. It's an excellent term I'm trying to use a lot these days.

Maybe no one invented this term and it spontaneously fermented simultaneously, a google search shows that people are trying to make 'Cinephotography' mean 'photographers shooting video on their DSLRs'. Blech, what a horrible meaning for this word, hope it doesn't catch on.

See:
https://vimeo.com/groups/cinephotography "This group is specifically for all Artists and Photographers turned cinematographers (or anyone who shoots amazing dslr cinematography)."
https://vimeo.com/cinephotographer "I would like to coin the term "cinephotographer" which is what I believe I am " A photographer turned cinematographer with the advent of DSLR movie modes"."

Me = omnigrapher

I have a habit of jumping in lens first, whatever it be attached to. 'Course "photographer" is a light writer... isn't gear or time specific.

I don't remember this thread (may have been during one of my banishments or something.) But reading it for the first time AFAIK, I see that Sara C came up with omnigrapher independently of my posting in another thread at some other time that I call myself an Omniographer, due to the fact the Epic is all-encompassing in what it records. Just wanted to set the record straight that I did not take her idea and add a letter, and though I'm not certain when I posted, I'm sure she did not take my idea and delete a letter.

That's the thing about ideas, they are the result of subconscious and often simultaneously occur to many people at the same time. Creatively we're all drilling into the collective subconscious. This is how people can write nearly the same movie plot at the same time.
