  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple finally responds to FCP X fallout

i think it's funny how all these screaming pros think that they are steering the ship. they boarded it and apple sets the course. you don't like it, apple issues a statement and continues on their way. if you're still not satisfied, get off the boat. apple doesn't care because they are heading to a port with millions of future fcpx users waiting. what part of this metaphor don't people understand?

and if you're interested in red specific software/hardware/tech things like me then you don't even get to populate the upper decks. red post is a subset of a subset to apple. i know we will have 64-bit r3d native editing in fcpx but the reason i'm not sure exactly when is because apple doesn't feel obliged to tell me. i represent less than 1% of their pro market so why would they?

i love apple because i know they will take me to cool places in tech. i hate them because i have to wear a blindfold along the way. it's just part of the ride so enjoy it.

Like so many here, your faith in Apple is evangelical.
You don't mention how they like to take the long way round though :-P
I believe Adobe had 64-bit r3d native editing over a year ago?

Do you think they can have version 3 out by then?
LOL....I seem to remember that it was v3 of FCP when they finally decided to include audio meters?

I really am enjoying these FCPX threads - you get to see another side of so many of the posters on here.

If they were sincere about leaving the past behind and embracing the future, why wouldn't they have included R3D support at launch?

Apple favors shipping as early as possible, even if it means leaving non-essential features out of early releases. And Apple has a much more austere definition of 'essential' than most.

We saw this with the laundry list of features missing from the first version of iOS: public APIs, MMS, Exchange, tethering, copy & paste, etc.

I know FCPX's limited handling of a tape-based workflow is a concern for some. I have a few questions regarding networks and their tape delivery requirements. I realize this isn't the only scenario in which tape is used, I'd just like to get more info on this particular aspect.

1) Are there currently any networks that accept digital deliverables?

2) If so, what are the requirements? Put another way, how many flavors of digital delivery are being used at the moment?

3) How well are those digital delivery methods working out? Are some better than others?

4) In your opinion, what do you think the networks that still currently require tape delivery are waiting for before they make the switch to digital?

IMO. The non-switch to digital is to do with archiving data as opposed to tapes on a shelf/in a climate controlled vault, and existing investment in expensive tape and HDTV infrastructure which has not been nearly amortised yet, plus the many constantly changing varieties of data out there. If they force tape deliverables, it greatly simplifies their end.

Going out to tape from an external app doesn't strike me as being a huge deal. You generally have to render out a flattened QuickTime file of a sequence these days anyway, to meet other deliverables requirements. At least that's been my experience.

Also, I'm not entirely sure we've heard the final word on tape support. The fact that there's no 'real' video out in FCP X (which I believe has to be coming) implies AV Foundation is still missing a lot of features for interacting with video I/O interfaces. It's possible that as those features are expanded, we could see more support for capturing, deck control, etc. On the other hand, we are talking about the company that ditched floppies several years before most people were comfortable with that, and will probably drop optical drives from the next round of MacBook Pros. Apple doesn't just allow old media formats to die, but actively attempts to murder them. So this could really go either way.

Is that how you like to plan your professional place on the market?

don't worry, we have.

Strike the t'gallant , tripple reef the main, batten down the hatches. Apple is in for a blow. They sent us a scow when a pilot schooner was the order of the day...

Blind folding myself, inserting a gagball and trying to remain calm while Apple rides me like a drunken Ahab is an experience that I care not to get used to.

Here's something constructive:

From a technical, practical, and creative perspective of someone who spent last decade editing on Vegas, Avid, Premiere, FCP and even Edius,
proper professional analysis put in highly technical terms is....

this is the most retarded pile of garbage I have ever seen with a label "Pro" on it and simple ridicule cannot suffice to even kill all the flies buzzing above it.

Terms "tolerance" and "politeness" have been stretched way too far and PR departments are loving it.

I think this release throws the ball back into Avid court. I'm likely going to make the jump using the cross over deal as soon as I wrap my current series. I'm not interested in using a program that you have to use an add-on like Automated Duck. I shelled out 900$ this past year on FCP studio thinking I'd be able to upgrade, it's crap to now have to pay to down grade! With all of avids fault, you know they will not pull this shit. I'd rather pay 1000$ to avid and know they have my back then spend 300$ of FCPX and hope they come around to the level that they were before. I'd have been happy with a 64-bit version exactly like FCP 7 so I can use multiple processors.

Not including the ability to import FCP 7 projects is a kick in the teeth. Are you telling me Apple that you can't write a import feature to update the timeline??? give me a break!

Just wondering with everyones arms up in the air about adding plug-ins and such too their current workflow, werent all professional post-houses used to this kind of budgeting? I mean we buy tons of plug-ins for After Effects, Avid MC, Protools, Maya and Photoshop.
Man I remember when you had to buy a CD mastering plug-in for Protools :P

Yeah paying to downgrade is fun and repurchasing your old plugins is a joy.

As a freelancer I can understand. However its the nature of the business. Its just that so much negativity has been placed on this.

Why wouldn't it be? Do you like spending money needlessly? I could see if it was a superior product but it's a downgrade from the Final Cut Studio suite.

I dont disagree with your Im just saying so much is placed on the negative. Ive stated before that what if Apple just EOL like Shake? FCP still exists on my workstation and it hasnt gone away. Its done and everyone seems to be focused on hate when they can move on or just chill.
Anyways it is a forum and everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I respect most on here for their input positive and negative.
