  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Final Cut Pro X Released

Damn! The credit card is locked away in the office and the accounts lady had a "chat" to me today about limiting expenditure until June 30. DOH!

nothing has changed. you can still run fcp 7 and/or you can run fcpx too. fcpx will add r3d support when red and apple are both done and ready. i don't see why everyone has decided that today has to be the day to embrace fcpx fully or abandon apple completely.

stop being so reactionary.

Wow; I didn't honestly believe that Apple would bail on having R3D support at launch.

From everything else I'm hearing, this release should have been called "iMovie Plus".

I predict that Avid and Adobe are going to be getting a lot of market-share back...

PS - I notice Apple had time to implement iPhone support though. Nice to know I can edit from your phone but not my Red. Way to send a message that this is a "pro" product Apple!

Not surprised at all. They were extremely careful not to mention anything about Red at Vegas.

My first attempt was to see what the R3D files look like. Well it didnt work (obviously) but I had to try :)
Playing around with that Scarlet slo-mo clip.
So far this app has potential.
Just need to convert some RED clips to ProRes for further tests ;)

I mean, overall it still seems like an awesome editor. Just doesn't support R3D. I don't know about anyone else here, but I shoot on several cameras. Not just Red. So, while disappointing, I'm not necessarily jumping ship just yet. Although the one-stop shop that is Adobe is seeming much more attractive these days.

When they say "Supports 4K" i think they mean "Supports Apple ProRes 4444"
No, they mean 4k resolution, so if you want to drop a 4k still into your 1080 timeline you can do it. 4444 refers to the colour sampling - nothing to do with resolution. ProRes supports up to 2k.

I thought ProRes 4444 was 4k?

Edit: I am stupid...

It's an excuse to jump ship, rather than a reaction. It's been a long time coming. If this new toy version of FCP had full R3D support, I'd probably be there, enthusiastically trying to enjoy the new workflow. This is a phone-friendly app. And although I could stay with the obsolete FCP 7, this is a good time to move to something that will be part of the pro workflow. (I also work with non-Red cameras a lot of the time, but even so, the all-Adobe solution looks more appealing than ever.)

First impression is that a lot of changes that have been made (elimination of source window, elimination of tracks, dumbing down color correction interface) are to make the package easier to use for new editors. Lack of R3D support furthers the perception that this is a prosumer version of iMovie rather than truly being aimed at the pro market. It makes sense to wait until the full reviews are in, but if Apple is no longer in the business of making software for the professional market, Avid and Adobe both offer excellent alternatives.

Final Cut looks awesome for making iPhone movies though!

Well, today is a great day... for Adobe. Time for me to learn Premiere.

While I look forward to a more in-depth review from experienced editors here on the forum and will certainly test it out myself (there's no way it's not worth $300) ... I must admit I'm a bit concerned by all of this.

I mean, they've been working on this for YEARS and Red has been one of (if not THE) pre-eminent "indie" cameras for years now -- and most Redusers are Apple users. Not only that but with Epic and Scarlet Red is poised to become both the dominant digital camera for features AND independent films, commercials, perhaps eventually TV, and so on. So I really just don't understand it. Why launch without R3D support???? ..... ugh.

The jury is still out but they really could have blown us all away -- and like they say, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

So far the first impression of FCPX for those in our shoes is not so hot :(

Really, this is not a "SUPER FINAL CUT", I think is a good tool, do the same as the old Final Cut and even better. I was waiting for more but we don't have all ours wishes. What me scares is the Imovie looks. Maybe Storm could be a good editor/finishing choice in the NEAR future. I started editing with Media100 and finishing in COSA. Now I do my work FCP and do all the finishing in After Effects ( color grading, titles and composition). It's all fresh, lets wait and see.

Great blog post from Larry Jordan on FCP X: http://www.larryjordan.biz/goodies/blog.html

from the blog

If tapeless media is your life, it will take you a week to stop giggling once you fire up FCP X.

However, FCP X has only limited support for tape. Tape ingest is from FireWire-attached devices, and streaming-only, no timecode controlled positioning of ingest or output to tape.

I’m reminded of the hand-wringing that occurred when Apple dropped floppy disks for optical media “back in the day,” now that Apple has decreed that tape is dead.

In this case, though, I side with the “tapists.” Apple controls the eco-system of the Mac. They don’t control the eco-system of Hollywood; then, again, I’m not sure anyone does. I have clients today that are using 3/4″ Umatic cassettes for sound design and music composition, and EDL lists are used daily for conforming major feature films. Both those formats were declared dead AGES ago!

While FCP X can ingest from a Firewire-attached deck, its output options to tape are limited to live streaming.

This lack of support for layback to video tape using RS-422 control protocol with timecode accuracy gives the perception that Apple is not meeting the needs of professional output. It remains to be seen if companies like AJA, Matrox, or Blackmagic Design will step into the breech. If they do, great. If not, this will cause many of us problems.

WHat??!! Tapeless is my life, but I still have to deliver tape deliverables to fests and distributors.
