We have been testing something really interesting to expand the footprint of REDucation. and now I'm ready to let everyone know about it...

For this next REDucation class at RED Studios Hollywood, we are going to have an advanced video-conferencing component. I've asked my friends at TekServe and OffHollywood in NYC to assist in this effort, as we are going to have "remote REDucation" as an experiment in this next class.

For a small cost, we will have a very small group of interested students on the east coast of the USA take the 3 day REDucation class in a space at Tekserve in the heart of NYC, connected to a super advanced HD video conferencing system over a high speed connection (the perfect use for HD technology by the way, HD video rez technology is not perfect for making movies, but for this application... perfect) (I couldn't resist putting that little nugget in :-)

The gang at OffHollywood will have a RED camera system and one of their Ace techs proctor the class in NYC while we are teaching in Hollywood, and when we go out and shoot RED on our Studio lot, they will go out and shoot in the Tekserve building and on the streets of NYC - - cool!

If this experiment works well and is effective we will use this to expand our teaching capabilities to various countries around the world that want to take REDucation, but can't afford the cost and time away from work to travel long distances.

If you are interested in remote REDucation... send me and Brian an email (and if you want to ask Mark from OffHollywood or Matt from Tekserve any questions we can pass on their email contact to you)

I'm: ted@red.com
and Brian is: brian.henderson@red.com

This remote class will be very limited numbers, so if you are interested, email us today, as it will likely fill up today - class starts on Tuesday at 9am Pac time... (so the NYC class gets to sleep in and start late every day :-)

I'm sure Mark will put this on his blog as well and keep people posted on the progress of the experiment there... that blog is: http://offhollywoodny.com/buzz/

You have email :)

Seems like you're adding a lot of confusion to a largely booked class. How are East Coast people going to work on the exercises? Share video clips in a timely manner, etc. ?

This might be a good experiment for Red, but I doubt if it 's going to be beneficial to Red Studios' attendees.

Feel free to doubt away Tim. But you are missing the point of technology and experimentation in a classroom environment entirely. When you open your mind and attitude to learning new things and being involved in new ways of communicating and using technology, you win. When you close your mind to the possibilities and criticize something you have not seen or touched in action you loose.

Ted, this is an awesome idea. Hopefully it goes well as I think lots of other locations would love to participate in Reducation. I really hope you do another one in Hollywood later this year, so sad that I'm missing this one :(

I greatly applaud Red and thank them for doing this and hope to sign up for this one or the next offering. Having a NYC location is quite helpful and very appreciated. Thanks

ps love the sleeping in part! winning!

You might have notice that Pat C. posted here - He's one of the Ace Techs from OffHollywood that has agreed to work with the NYC class - this is great news. I know this is very last minute on getting this going, so spread the word to people you know that might be interested in taking this remote REDucation - it should be really interesting to see how it works.

I just signed up AND even posted it on my facebook! Glad to finally be able to attend one of these things! I could never afford the commute out there but this is a wonderful option that is far less costly! I'll spread the word among my former classmates

What about Australia?????

Just my luck... yesterday I signed up for this.

This afternoon, this happened:

Huge eruption in Iceland!

I may have to go shoot this. Sorry Ted, Brian - I'll let you know tomorrow!

I wish you guys the best luck with this experiment!
It would be very cool to see more of these remote classes in the near future. Perhaps even one up here in Scandinavia?
I would happily assist on setting it up.

If it is like some of the online college courses I've seen, the LA folds won't even know the difference. Seems like the NYC group will be essentially watching live video lectures and then doing the hands on stuff amongst themselves with the NYC affiliates being proctors for those sections of REDucation. It makes a lot of sense to me!

I've gotten lots of emails from all over the world of people interested in this remote REDucation via video conference in their part of the world (more interest than I thought I would get at this early stage, I've heard from many countries already) We will try and shoot a short video during the class, of how it works in action between LA and NYC so you can all see it, and if it works as planned we will look at expanding to other places.
