How much do you know about RED, the cameras, the company and the vivid personalities that make following RED news so much fun?

Well, it is finally done, a real labor of love - almost 200 trivia questions about the RED company, EPICs, RED ONEs, and of course the colorful personalities who work to create our favourite camera system!

I would like to thank Jarred for his support and kind permission to borrow the RED trademark for the app name, and the use of press images. Thanks also to Mark Pederson for the use, by permission, of the photo of EPIC-M used in the icon. And, of course, my thanks to Jim and the entire RED team for making the many hours I have spent on this site compiling questions for this quiz a real pleasure.

For the competitive among us, there is integration with GameCenter and you can post your score on Facebook.

I hope all of you enjoy this creation as much as I enjoyed making it!

Who will become the RED Trivia Champion? :)

iTunes Store Link, thanks to Elliott for the reminder :).

PS Here are two screen shots, with one of the easiest questions and one of the hardest, so you have a good idea what to expect. I shrunk these for the BB - the actual app takes advantage of iPhone 4's Retina Display resolution. Red Trivia works on iPad in compatibility mode.

A link to the App store would help.

Thats awesome, but I'm not shoving out $5 for an app that quizzes me about an awesome camera company. No offense, its just not worth it.

BUt the app looks sick! Wish I could see how well I'd do.

If it really was a labor of love you wouldn't sell it for $5... :ihih:

We may as well just get the Geek Trophy engraved with Joseph's name on it. It'll save him the $5.

Jim's entire company is a labor of love and yet he sells his camera for $25,000+. Why? Because he has to recoup his costs, or he cannot stay in business.

I'm kinda disappointed by this cheapness. Doesn't seem like the film biz at all. Hey, $5 won't even buy you a roll of gaffer's tape! $3.50, which is the net proceeds to me after Apple takes their cut, won't even buy me a half decent fast-food lunch.

Now, I understand that you are used to buying everything on the App Store for $ 0.99. But the reason that's possible is thanks to volume - the promise of selling to thousands if not millions of app-hungry iPhone customers.

There are only about 9000 RED cameras in the world, and many RED owners have more than one camera, so there are probably no more than 5,000 actual RED owners. We know not every RED user will want this game; it's typical to say a maximum of 10% of the market might buy. So I have an extremely small market, sufficiently small that over time I would expect to sell a maximum of a few hundred copies. With a $0.99 game, that's about the price of a single tank of gas. With a $3.50 game, that's getting close to the price of a single SSD module for a Scarlet.

Thus the $5 price, figuring that since RED fans are passionate, they might be willing to pay a relatively high (but still cheap by any reasonable standard) price to enjoy a game that was custom crafted specifically for them. It's entirely meaningless to a wider audience.

I'm glad many of you think the game looks cool; I put a lot of effort into making it that way. Now I hope you will consider supporting the creation of the App Store's only RED-themed game by buying a copy.

Thank you :).

I think their problem (including mine) is that, why pay $5 for a app that does nothing for them besides quiz them. I'd pay that for a complete epic menu layout, or Scarlet FOV app, but not a bunch of questions.

Sorry if I sound harsh, but I'm very frugal when it comes to apps, this app is geared right towards my group, but it offers us nothing huge. I'd pay the big bucks for the Panavison app, or the Garmin GPS, but thats because they do something for me.

I understand you logic about the price, but I have to agree that if it had a bit more than a quiz I would pay for it.
Any chance you might add something to it?

But by setting the price lower you would sell a lot more copies! The price is an important factor in selling an iApp. And $5 is definitely not the sweet spot for this kind of app. A lot of people (including me) would buy it in a heartbeat if it was $1 or maybe even $2.

I said this app was a good idea, just bought it and finished all the questions.

It revealed really interesting aspects of my knowledge. Turns out I knew less about prototype names than I thought...and a lot more about Jim's personal life than I thought too!

Also had a few touch-misfires, still. My score was 67340 points :smile5:

EDIT: Also, the pricepoint was just fine for me. Higher than expected sure, but worth supporting you David :)

Thanks for your support, Eren - I'm glad you enjoyed the game!

Wow, Joseph (should he join in on the fun) will have to work hard to beat your score! Even I will, actually, and I memorized almost all the questions and answers while testing the game :).

It really is pretty funny how many stray facts we know about people on the RED Team, including Jim. Personal details tend to be more colorful than figures or prototype names, so they stick in memory better.

Thanks to everyone else for your comments - I appreciate the time you all took to write and consider my humble game. It's great to know people care, even if many don't care enough to contribute $5 to the cause :).

I bought it! I buy anything that says RED btw... ;-)

Nice work!

Dennis, I doubt that anyone here means to be harsh or insensitive about your situation, but rather, just giving you feedback - whether you want it or not, I guess. :001_smile:

If you had hoped to create a little revenue to compensate you for your time and effort, I suppose this is one of those situations where a little market research might have helped. At the very least, it could have saved some frustration if a lower price wasn't go to produce the revenue you hoped for.

I know when I first read your announcement, I thought "Cool, might be fun to know how much I know about RED." But it doesn't seem all that appealing in this context at $5. It's not the absolute money, just how anyone chooses to allocate their nickels and dimes. The retail business is all about people's competing interests and we all make decisions about money allocation many times per day. Every product has to find it's marginal appeal above others in its category and price range. Also, personally, I am not a gamer (never buy games at all) but, even if I was, it seems that this has a very limited appeal - once you go through and figure out the answers, even the amusement factor is gone.

OK - I have over analyzed enough. I genuinely hope it catches on for you.

P.S. I second those who suggested something like a replication of the Scarlet interface or some equally "educational"product!!

Well, the public and market appear to have spoken.

Everyone seems to love the app but hate the price.

Based on your feedback, I have lowered the price to $1.99, available now.

I hope you all enjoy it :)
