  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

NAB 2011 update...

"worth the trip" suggests something that is best seen innthe flesh. Dragon and 4k projector did not show up in any tangible form. There is nothing about the announcements that would be any different there on the show floor compared to being on the Redmodz stream. I am left to assume when Jim posted that comment he was planning a different kind of introduction than what happened but eventually thougt better of it and decided to simply announce that they are working on these things. And that is fine...I just can't imagine that it is what Jim imagined when he typed those words.

Monstro upgrade ability to Epic is monstrous. Do you think Sony would provide that option? Red had the luxury this time of designing it in to the Epic. Upgrading the Red One to MX was an accident and lucky for us they did it. Future upgrades to Epic is awesome.

Last year I was frightened a bit with where the accesories was heading. This year Matt put all my fears to rest. It is really thought through. Options are innurmerable both for my Red One and future Epic. Only advice I can offer is that you need to get your hands on all the accessories to really figure out what will work best for you.

Michael's app for ipads is amazing and worth the trip alone. Absolutely the biggest development I saw that will help me on the set.

Epic does just what I thought it would. I couldn't play with one much at Red's booth but found it all alone for me at Bandpro. Touchscreen and all.
God bless her, Kelly is here and 9 months pregnant!!! THAT qualifies as a surprise. She straightened out an order for me.
Much more. Glad I came this year. Worth it already just to see the above.
Met Gibby. Such a great and humble guy.
Wow, thanks for your vision Jim.

Well, it's not over yet. Let's hope the surprise is more glam than damned.

WOW what a great day! I got to meet Jim, Jarred, various RED team people - and I got to hold an Epic in my hand! And what an amazing short film in 4K. Does anyone know what lenses were used in that film?
We still have yet to find out the final specs for Epic-S, however while nothing has been confirmed, I have heard from official sources that "it is very likely based on testing" that Epic-S will be able to achieve 120fps in 2K, which I would be very happy with.
It was also cool to meet so many other RED people at NAB. It really is a special community of film makers and creative professionals, and I am so thankful that I could be apart of it today!

Red One sensor upgrades were apart of the Red One program from the very beginning. One of the main reasons why I put down that initial $1000 deposit while Red was still just a concept. Dragon upgrade is amazing news actually because I thought I would have to buy out a whole NEW brain if I ever wanted a sensor upgrade in the future. Looks like Red changed their minds and we all benefit now. I'm hoping for increased low light sensitivity personally. Resolution and DR seem to be amazing with the current offering. Just need a more sensitive chip so I can light my movies with the tally lamp... LOL

I can understand why everyone's upset. I was really looking forward to lots of new information and so far I would say there was very little announced about current and near-future products that we haven't seen.

At the same time, remember the threads about the Japanese disaster? We know they have some crucial parts that are made in Japan and that will not be available for the quantities they are planning to ship. So they retreat from their plan of shipping Epic-X/S and focus energies on EPIC-M. That way, people who really, really need them can get EPIC-Ms, and most people will hold off for the cheaper X/S. That way, the scarce parts are allocated by how eager you are to get the camera, which seems only fair to me. The alternative is interminable queues, and nobody at all gets cameras.

At the time, people said things like "We should throw anyone off the board who complains about delays due to the Japan crisis." And here we are, making those very complaints we suggested nobody should make.

Now, I believe Jim should have made a prononucement before NAB: "We are sorry, we don't have a date for EPIC-X/S, don't go to NAB if you don't want to, and we'll make announcements when we know what's up." But at the time the disaster happened, NAB was already fully booked and people were committed to come. He was in the mode during a trip when the whole thing feels like it's on rails and you can't stop it no matter what.

What's almost funny about this is that we complain because we care, all of us. We have a lot invested in our appreciation of Jim and his company. I don't think there's a single one of us who doesn't want him to succeed. And really, I don't think any of us doubt that he will, in time.

So Jim, if you're listening, understand that if we didn't care, we wouldn't complain and REDUSER would be an empty space, berift of life. I hope you are proud, if nothing else, that you have a community of people behind you who really cares and can't wait to see you succeed :).

Am I the only person who has read the million announcments from Jim that Scarlet is a few months behind Epic?
Epic-X is not available/shipping yet. Therefore Scarlet will not be available/shipping for a few months. I don't know why people would think that it was going to be at NAB.. and thats not considering the impact on supply chain of the Japanese disaster... get some perspective guys. We cannot blame RED for a large portion of this, this time.

One scenario to imagine (although unlikely I'm sure knowing how passionate Jim and the crew are) is a RED that only announces products when they are done and ready to ship. This is certainly one way that RED could avoid estimating delivery to their customers. And if problems happen (Japan) they would simply change plans internally without ever disappointing a customer. Rather than announcing a 4K projector, they show up on the forum and trade sites and announce it as available. All specs are in place, the product actually exists, it's ready to ship, has a price. Done. Add it to your cart on the RED store, have it shipped overnight, easy as can be. Only downside. You never saw it coming. Didn't have a way to plan for it.

I suppose the easy answer here is to say RED should be able to do both. They can announce products that are in development but they should have internal projections that are more accurate and allow them to hit their objectives more precisely. I'm not sure it's that simple. These guys have never come across as corporate bean counters. I see them more as the guys in the garage experimenting, seeing what sticks, changing on a dime. So, could they pull of both, I don't know. I have no idea how things are behind those walls, and will never pretend to. I'm also tempted to say that I would prefer the RED world I described above. But there's a part of me that likes the craziness of the current RED world. So, I don't really have an answer.
Here it is guys. Looks like the scenario I was describing is now in place.

I'm in no position to say that people listening to Jim are foolish.

I guess I just read "worth the trip" very differently from most of you. I've been going to NAB for over 20 years and in that time I never made the trip based exclusively on one companies promises or claims. Everyone makes a similar claim at NAB. Theres nothing to see at NAB that cant be 'seen" at home, its just a lot more enjoyable to take in the event in person in a city like Las Vegas. Going to NAB to see one single product just seems silly to me.

I haven't been able to find any information on this - is Dragon the 6K Monstro FF35 sensor? Or is it a new S35 sensor based on Monstro tech? Or is it too early to discuss this?

MX for RedOne was released 12+ months before epic. MONSTRO upgrade for epic is being released in 2012. Scarlet is following epic by 6+ months... If things hold steady I should see my FF35 Scarlet circa July 2013. Hmmm.

Great post, David.

Yeah we all care about our future RED cams, because we just want/like these products. :p

Any hope to see a Scarlet Machined program now ?

OK, moving forward…

I think the majority here will agree that RED would rather have taking orders for current products, than to talk about neeeext gen technology.

But of course, if they can't show 100 boxed Scarlets or Epics ready to ship, they've gotta talk about something, right? And I can only assume their upcoming tech is "mindblowing", but I haven't looked into it, since it's not for me.

But...

How can it be that there isn't solid info about Epic-S and Scarlet? Surely they MUST be fixed now? I mean, they can't keep slippery slope their products year after year. Nothing is perfect. Be done-release!

I was expecting the Scarlet package to be announced. It could still ship in August. But for that to happen, they can't keep adding/changing?

And Scarlet seems to be working, so why are there no details yet?

If I had an Epic, I certainly wouldn't be at NAB this year. I'd be out playing/working it!

"Dragon" is the first Monstro sensor that will be available, and the main announcement was that any Epic-M or Epic-X brain (not Epic-S) can be upgraded to Dragon so that customers don't have to purchase a new brain to get into Monstro. They have not announced the sensor size or resolution at this time, both because they do not wish to give information away to competitors and because things are always subject to change. What you can take from it is that they're never slowing down their commitment to make the best digital cinema cameras on the planet, and that if you're a current customer they are doing their best to help you stay current at a reasonable cost.

for those who missed the whole thing... and have no time to wade through this entire thread, could anyone at Red sum up the announcements about Epic X delays, dragon upgrade, stage 3 starting time, etc. ?? I'm getting confused..
