  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon "G" 1.4 primes, a mini review...

As for a 14 or 18mm I'm perfectly happy with the 14-24, at those wide focal lengths 2.8 is fine for me.

I'm actually the opposite. It's relatively easy to get light levels up for tighter shots in the 50-100mm range since you usually see less of the location and you can always just walk your lights in. My challenge is often getting enough exposure for the wider shots since it takes a lot of light to illuminate larger areas.

Thank you for the review Evin.
I own a good collection of fine well functioning Nikon primes and have been happy with them on the Red.
Now is the time to change with Epic cominng and I have problems deciding between Nikon or Canon.
What do you feel are the advantage of the "G" serie compared to the Canon primes?

Thanks for the review Evin. I guess there are two pieces that would make these an obvious choice over their Canon counterparts:

1. Estimated availability of the Nikon mount for Epic
2. Availability of the Redmote Pro and its viability as a decent wireless follow focus (to negate the reverse focus gear issue)

Jarred?

My high school photo lab had a Nikon which I quite liked. (1968) I also used their Bolex 16 mm film cam. It was a little annoying that the Bolex focused backwards from the Nikon, but I got used to it. Since then, I've been disappointed that so many other lenses focus backwards, but thankfully Nikon has stayed the right direction. :-)

Just kidding, of course, but I do hope that the Nikon mount is a solid locking system, unlike Red's first offering. Anybody heard? If not, maybe Optitek will save the day again.

Thanks again, Evin, for your many generous contributions to this forum.

I have been waiting on this set for supply to rise and price to drop.......ooops, surprise tsunami.

Meanwhile, I'm curious about how the Red 17-50 compares, used as a variable prime, at a similar cost to 3 of these Nikons.

I'm with you on that. Rolling the focus knob toward me when I want to focus farther away is just counter-intuitive. But, like you said, we get used to it.

I looked up the DX sensor size and found it is less than 24mm wide. I believe the recording area of the Epic sensor is about 27mm wide. Are we sure these lenses will not vignette?

The FX versions are full frame.

Mind you, these lenses are FX, AF-S, Full frame (24mmx36mm), not DX (15.8x23.6).

Thanks guys. For some reason, when I looked at this thread again, all the sudden "G" equaled "DX" in my little brain.

The Nikon "backward focus feature" can be corrected by a Petroff follow focus in seconds if desired. I understand that Petroff makes this version for Zacutto also. Been using it for nearly two years, and am delighted. I also have the new Nikon f 1.4 lens set as mentioned by Evin, and am equally impressed. The motors are quiet, too. Optitek Pro Lock for me, solid lens mounting and manual iris control. I understand that Duclos has a reversing gear for the Nikons if you wish to use a standard follow focus.

I'll control myself and not post my witty repartee - something to do with Texas, George Bush, and small brains.

But of course you couldn't control yourself and went ahead and wrote a not so witty remark about small brains and Texas, implying that another Red user - Larry - and everyone else from Texas is stupid. I'm not from Texas, but since everyone on the list doesn't share your political views or your elitist attitude about Texas, why not just leave the demeaning stuff out. I know, I know, it's just supposed to be a joke. But how about according other members of the Reduser group the kind of respect you undoubtedly appreciate, while keeping politics out of it? Besides, for all we know, Larry's a genius.

Cheers James.

lol.... please explain

but I warn ya, I don't think it is going to make sense
Heh, heh,

I thought I was quoting the Brundige post, but it's hard to read the buttons and I hit the reply button instead of the Quote button. Being from Texas, I guess I've left myself open to Brundage saying "See, I told you so!"

The +1 post was the same thing for the Eaton post.
