  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

It was a beautiful, beautiful morning out at Salton Sea with Epic M. Everything was shot 96fps full sensor. It was a thing of beauty.

Right now I'm just waiting on some beta software from Adobe to handle these Epic files in Premiere, then I am going to cut a short sample film and post it at Vimeo. I might even post a direct 4K download link if anyone is interested?!

Hey Tom,

Do you happen to know if Adobe will have this update ready by the time Epic Launches in larger numbers this summer?

Thanks for keeping us updated with your experience with Epic ;) Looks like you are getting incredible footage!

I'd be very interested to see a 4k preview, can't wait to see what you can do with this camera Tom, it sure is in good hands =]

Very cool. Don't forget to nag them every chance you get about making Adobe Rocket enabled please. Or better yet, CUDA acceleration for REDRAW if that is possible. :)

Actually if you are on a Mac you may not want CUDA GPU acceleration - as the new amazing Mac Laptops dont have Nvida cards and hence Premier CUDA acceleration would not work. As these laptops and their Thunderbolt I/O will be perfect for field work with the EPIC... you would be better requesting GPU acceleration using Open CL support

Great news Tom. Hope you bring some samples to NAB. I opted for the Signature too.

quick story.. yesterday my stepson sent me a e-mail asking "are you capable of doing something like this?". Attached was a link to Timescapes by Tom Lowe. I told him probably not but I sure know the guy who could. Your hard work and vision are becoming the stuff of legend. Congratulations on the Epic.

Ha, thanks, Frank.

Here's a quick framegrab from our shoot this morning. Loving this camera... loving it!

Tom... how much of the time are you shooting 96fps (or 120fps)?

Jim

Haha, 100%!

I think I just need to get it out of my system. :w00t:

Like I was telling David Mullen, the first time you see the combination of 5K res with 96fps, it's startling. Our eyes might be used to seeing 5K-type resolution (from IMAX films or 65mm 5-perf like "Baraka"), but we are not accustomed to seeing 65mm quality with 100 frames per second. It's something new, at least to my eyes.

Thanks Mike, crossing my fingers that you'll get to cover CL developments in The RC.

Tom, is that HDRx?

Tom and Jannard, does Tom's Epic have 120fps enabled?

Jannard, does the team know what will be the max framerate for HDRx?

My Epic has 120 enabled, but I'm shooting for 16:9 aspect on my film.

120fps is enabled now... 5K 2.4:1. 96fps for 2:1 and full frame.

HDRx max is half max for any given aspect ratio.

This is really interesting - and great to hear that 120fps is available.

I'm particularly interested to hear about any tests that people do screening footage shot 5K/24fps and then 5k/48+fps to see what truth there lies in the argument not only for spatial resolution, but also for temporal resolution. Tom, I'd love to hear more of your thoughts here, as you seem particularly interested (and perhaps, your subjects particularly well suited) to higher fps usage and testing the ideas of temporal resolution.

Fortunately, I think RED has both fronts covered.

Thank you Jannard.

Have you considered measuring out what will be the lowest resolutions out of which Epic will provide 4k and 2k resolved detail, and making those two of the resolutions available in the menu so as to have a quick guide to get the highest framerate possible with little compromise for 4k and 2k projects?

Give us a minute... :-)

We took one final trip down to Salton Sea this evening with the Epic. It was heavenly. I think I have enough footage now to put a little video together, hopefully.

I can't wait to see it. Seriously beautiful looking stuff.

Great question Roberto
Can we dial in any desirable window size/compression on Epic?
I guess to get clean 2k after debayer, one would need a 2.4k capture.

Thank you

Lots of custom options... just not now.

Sorry, but that sounds a bit, well, silly -- shooting at 2.4K just so that you could nail a theoretically exact measurable 2K resolution??? (Which to avoid aliasing, would theoretically have to be kept in a final 4K container rather than a 2K container.)

If you want a good 2K image, then shoot anything higher than 2K, like 3K, 4K, or 5K. Who shoots a movie so that every shot hits some perfect line resolution measurement? There are all sorts of real world factors that are going to affect measurable resolution shot by shot, we don't make movies starring line resolution charts.

And why would you want to shoot at the bare minimum resolution above 2K to achieve 2K? What's wrong with 3K, for example? Why does it have to be 2.4K?

This is where I think people are putting way too much emphasis on numbers. What happens when you achieve this perfect measurable 2K resolution? Do you get a gold star? Do you throw out the image if it ends up at 1.9 or 2.1?

I think the logic is to be able to pick your frame rate, then choose the highest possible resolution that would allow it.

I actually asked for something along these lines a long time ago by requesting a true 2.40 aspect ratio at various resolutions. Right now we get 2.40 at 4.5K, but I would like it at 4K, 3K, and 2K. If we could also get something along the lines of a Redcode 20 compression, I was hoping that these two options together might allow higher frame rates on the RED One. I would love, for example, to be able to shoot 3K / 2.40 / RC20 / 75fps.
