Hi, so I've been lurking on this site for a while and finally joined so i can post a message.

I've been using the RED One on shoots for the last two years and have really loved it - also shot a short with it in 2009 (http://www.rewirefilm.com).

I'm currently planning on shooting another short on a RED Epic here in Toronto in June (we'll be renting).

The big question I have though, and the one that seems impossible to get answered from searching these forums, googling or scouring the RED site itself is: "When the hell can we buy one ourselves?"

I know there's a pecking order in terms of current owners having preference.

I'm curious to know approximately when RED will be taking orders for new owners who are interested in purchasing an Epic package?

Like, we talking Spring, summer, fall of 2011 or we talking about 2012 here?

Thanks!

All orders for EPIC-X placed at NAB will be delivered before summer's end.

Jim, just to clarify... you speak of the EPIC-X package (Stage 3), as opposed to the EPIC (brain-only, Stage 4). So that means you'll open the books for the first Stage 3 orders at NAB?

Mike

Dear Jim , do you mean also stage 4 , the mass that doesn't currently owns a red one. I've read your earlier post mentioning , this, but the comment of Brent on it made it indistinct.

I'd like to know , because I need more systems for s3d, and it would be nice to have some comment on that.

Stage 2 and even Stage 3 sound imminent. Not "box up your Stage 3, R-1 imminent... but "Get your ducks (currency) lined up imminent."

But what do I know... I thought I would have my first Epic by now.

Okay so... is there a clear description of these stages somewhere with up to date timelines? I remember seeing a big honking graphic last year but that seems to be gone...

I'm asking about buying an Epic without being an existing owner of any other RED camera.

I know this is a later stage, but what stage is that, is there any indication of when these orders can be placed?

Thanks!

David, this is the most recent I'm aware of:

If I'm in error, someone will be along to correct me I'm sure!

This is the only thing I could find on the RED site (and I *still* think this info should be on the main website, and kept regularly updated with ETAs :-) )

*edit: I see the above now lists pricing for the matte box, which has only very recently been released, so it evidently IS being kept updated, and is the most current info available AFAIK. Apologies!*

David, the only thing being discussed is EPIC-X, which only relates to current RED owners.

Nothing beyond that has been discussed and we need to wait for Jim and crew to let us know anything further.

Everyone needs to trust that they didn't just forget to mention anything beyond, they will say something when appropriate.

Jim, for me it's a nothing more than a small matter of financial planning: I now know that they will be taking deposits for Stage 3 no later than NAB, and possibly earlier if they open up the RED store for online orders before then. I'll need to make sure I have sufficient capital immediately available, now. That's important information to have. That's excellent news. That's all :-)

While I might be wrong, especially reading Brent's recent post, I believe EPIC-X now applies to everyone. Stage 2 and 3 still have the package deals, but EPIC-X is one of three EPIC models.

As far as the brain is concerned, there is a lot of evidence to suggest that Stacey is correct.

STAGE 3.5: Trade-in your RED ONE and get EPIC S35 Brain ( NEW R1 ELIGIBILITY ENDED TODAY )

Cameras with voided warranties are not eligible for ANY trade-in offers/credits.
Cost is $28,000 less $17,500 to trade-in your RED ONE. Net price of $10,500 for 1x S35 MYSTERIUM-X brain with PL mount.

STAGE 4: Purchase EPIC S35 Brain

Available to RED ONE camera owners that were invoiced by RED or completed the official RED ownership transfer process after May 22, 2010 ( as well as all non-RED ONE owners)
Cost is $28,000 for 1x S35 MYSTERIUM-X brain with PL mount.
Will begin shipping once all Stage 3.5 orders have been notified they are ready for delivery. You must take delivery within 30 days from notification that your order is ready for delivery . Notifications go back to the order of date/time order placed.

It is this very same S35 MYSTERIUM-X brain with PL mount mentioned in Stages 1-3.

More importantly, perhaps we should stop trying to endlessly pick through past statements by Red and instead concentrate on interpreting something easy ... like the Bible. :w00t:

It is what it is.

Let Red do their best, and when you get your Epic (whenever that may be) do your best to shoot great stuff with it. :thumbup1:

Stacey, :smile5:
No, EPIC-X is and always has been the special package designed for RED One owners to upgrade to the new system. This goes back to the obsolescence is obsolete concept.

Originally all upgrades would be done to the RED One but once it was agreed that in order to be free of obsolescence the camera had to be modular, the EPIC was born, and Jim generously created the EPIC-X package to get us on the runaway EPIC train.

So really no confusion here, EPIC-X is stage 2 and stage 3 (existing owners either keeping or returning their RED One.)

Anything beyond is simply "EPIC."

Mike, :smile5:
Of course you need to plan, completely understand that, but Red felt a lot of heat with the original R1 when predicting too far into the future.

It's in their best interest to only announce what they know they can deliver close to the time.

We all learned this with them first time and support them this time around.

After ordering, I waited over a year for my R1 to arrive and was fine with it. We all knew the deal.

I have had a $5k deposit on my EPIC for about 7 months now and I'm fine with it.

My advice is to have your money ready by NAB but you won't necessarily get to spend it yet.

But best is not to badger RED for more specifics as it won't generate further information but could frustrate them.

I only say this to further understanding, not to criticize your desire for information.

We're all on the same team and the Red community is incredibly strong around the world. :cheers2:

As far as the brain is concerned, there is a lot of evidence to suggest that Stacey is correct.

I think the confusion is coming from the difference between EPIC-X (package) and EPIC with MX Brain.

Same brain but EPIC-X refers to a package, not brain type.

Either that or I'm confused. Wouldn't be the first time, but I think I'm right on this one.

I've found that you are rarely confused, Jim. :smile5:

Same brain but EPIC-X refers to a package, not brain type.

I think when they changed Scarlet S35 to Epic-S the Epic-X will now have to refer to all stages of the Epic-X Brains. This includes Stage 4's (new customers) even though they don't get the free modules.

Epic-M
Epic-X
Epic-S

I don't think there will be one just called "Epic." That would be even more confusing...
