  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED PRO Mattebox

I'll also add to that... "The Gamble".

When pricing, you have to guess how many you are going to sell. What if you are wrong? If you sell a lot more than you thought... good. But if you sell less... the DEV costs hit harder on each unit and if you didn't add enough profit you will end up losing money. Trust me when I tell you this happens a LOT in the product business. We try to minimize this happening by making as good (and cool) of products as we can so the customer likes them... and sell them at a price that is better than comparable products on a price/performance basis.

I guess I have no secrets left. :-)

Jim

Jim,

This is a great looking MB, and the price is perfect.

I'd buy one today if you had rings for my LDS Ultra Primes.

Any update on availability?

M

If the LDS Ultra Primes are also 95mm... we are working on it.

Thank you very much. Sorry to cause trouble, but politeness is appreciated much more than snide comments. I've seen that problem in a couple different instances in this thread alone.

Just a guess, but just maybe comments like this

"Hmm, I guess that makes sense. If the market is willing to pay for it, you might as well mark it up. "

could be seen to rub people the wrong way just a little ?

Its been pretty quiet around here!! im wondering what Jim and jarred are Cooking lately!!! im quite sure they got something up their sleeves!!!

Jim

A coup d'état (English: /ˌkuːdeɪˈtɑː/, French: [ku deta]; plural: coups d'état)—also known as a coup, putsch, and overthrow—is the sudden, extrajudicial deposition of a government,[1][2][3] usually by a small group of the existing state establishment—typically the military—to replace the deposed government with another body; either civil or military. A coup d'état succeeds if the usurpers establish their dominance when the seated government fails to disallow their consolidation of power.

You seem to have that one cracked. It's making enough to meet demand that needs the biggest turnaround. I will wait for RED. Many of my film-making peers are buying DSLR's or HD Camcorders. But I'm betting once they see my Scarlet, My singular order will spark three or four more, and theirs in turn.

If there's one secret I've learnt from RED, it's that marketing a product isn't half as important as offering what customers actually want in the first place.

well... That's sort of the oldest and purest form of marketing...

yep, but still so often sacrificed (not just by other camera companies) in the name of higher profits. My mam once came back from a well known fast food chain and said "look at this, we've got balloons, toys, a party hat, keyrings...they'll give you anything but something decent to eat". We rarely went there afterwards on account of being hungry

I definitely understand how that could rub people the wrong way. All products are marked up, but that doesn't mean they're over priced. In my original question, I asked why the price is what it is, simply because I didn't understand it. Jim replied with "You can always make your own... :-)", implying that demand/willingness to pay was the reason. That obviously isn't the case (he went into the actual reasons a few pages back). Sorry for the misunderstanding. Hopefully it can end here.

Well, I'm sold. The price point is spot on and the accessories are well priced too.
Good thing too, I almost bought a LMB-5.

A couple of questions.

I'm not sure is this has been answered but what is the widest lens mm that this will work for? wi
I'm wondering if it will work at all on the Duclos 11-16, I'm guessing no.
What is the largest diameter lens barrel that will fit assuming a rod mount. I'm wondering about canon telephotos and leaving the mb-14 in the truck.

Is there any ring material used to prevent scratching the anodizing off lenses when mounting and removing? I like my lenses to look good for as long as possible and I don't necessarily want to put marking tape on the front of them!

perhaps you could tape up the inside of the ring then? that could work...

btw.. Mattebox is made right here in the good old U.S.A.

And this is real bi-directional layered carbon fiber with a custom surface texture that has with no filler.. not the cheap laminated carbon stuff you see some places. Since we dont laminate with poymers, epoxys, fiberglass etc, or use a janky clear coat, Ours does not get as brittle in the cold, nor does it turn yellow under UV/sunlight.

Well Jarred if no polymer or epoxy, which type of bonding substance is used? Or you just simply "forge" it with polyamide under hi pressure and temperature?

Yes they are 95mm as well ;)

Ketch,

The standard Ultras are 95mm. The LDS Ultras are 104mm for the 16-135mm lenses. They have a larger barrel and bright green focus scales like the Master Primes.

So, Jim, how about a 104 clamp on? Or would an Arri Adapter ring work to get me to 104?

M
