  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim and team, could you please consider once again designing a anti-theft or tracking device inside of all Epic cameras before it's to late?

This would benefit a lot of us.

One of my camera systems got stolen from my car some months ago(they opened the trunk with a remote) and I'm already affraid again it will happen eventually again. Lucky enough on that car I can still manually lock it, but on newer models this isn't possible anymore. Car manufacturers decline being aware of this, police confirms it exists, but insurance won't pay because there's no damage to the car....

So a tracking device would be really great, but for this , it should be inside of the brain...
there must be a solution, don't you think, one that doesn't work when camera is working and powered , so no interference... but actually starts working, and please let us have a pincode when we want that locks the camera when booted. We should be able to choose whether to use it or not.

I had suggested something like that on the thread about Marks stolen camera.
I would pay extra for this.

This is very topical with what just happened today

We want to do all we can to help recover stolen cameras. So make sure to log your camera's 9 digit PIN number and keep that in a safe place. This PIN is written into each frame of footage recorded, so there is a continuous trail of evidence being created by each camera.

The PIN is always displayed on boot up, but what else to do is an open question. Any suggestions on this subject are most welcome...

if my iphone can be tracked through an app, its possible for the
epic maybe?

sidenote: insurance wont pay as long as there is the possibility that the cam can be found.

A GPS chip inside the brain that then could be tracked would be ideal. I'd pay extra for that. Could it then be built into maybe REDCINEX or something to allow tracking of the camera if only by GPS coordinants?

I am sure after Marks terrible experience, there is a simple lesson here to keep everything locked away and I am sure Mark would agree if it wasnt already, however another solution for something built in like a GPS chip would be much appreciative.

Just my thoughts.

In an old thread, there were suggestions how an optional firmware lockout could be provided requiring a code to activate, and should at least keep a thief from using the camera.

Once word gets around that the camera is useless without getting the camera-specific code from RED, no fence would buy one and professional thieves would not steal one.

Still, amateur thieves would do so if the opportunity arises, but that opportunity shouldn't arise.

I was under the impression the camera already had a built in gps receiver. So I agree that being able to track that would be a great option to have. If it isn't possible what about making the brain automatically connect to internet when its possible and transmitting the gps coordinates to some kind of software that we can check.

Let's see, here are some thoughts:

1. RED Dye kit built into each brain. Set off by remote signal rendering the camera useless until reactivated by RED.
2. GPS system like the iPhone 4 that allows for tracking and disabling the camera from remote.
3. Self-taser via smartphone remote. Allows for camera to taze the holder. This could be a fun gag for on set too. (Don't taze me 'bro).
4. C4 module. Looks like a regular pro I/O, but with a little bit more "punch". Again, tripped via remote. Ties in nicely with the Bomb EVF.

Those are a few options to get the discussion rolling.

One word... HACKERS!

It wouldn't be very hard to implement having Redcine call home once in a while and say "now processing footage from camera #0006".

If the camera has been recorded as stolen in the database it could then grab location info like this: www.preyproject.com (Prey is an awesome and free stolen computer tracking service, BTW. I use it on all of my portables.)

This would be much less expensive and simpler to set up than any sort of GPS receiver / cellular transmitter system.

i'd say it's just life. forget the gps tracker etc....had my notebook computer recently stolen. They wipe the drive clean and can't track. So what's the point? i'd say a camer shows on set as stolen....not long before someone eventually realizes it. Or they end up in the garbage. But hey, you can't track your stolen bike, your stolen lens your stolen shoes. Why worry about your camera? your best defense is insurance. I wouldn't rely on a tracking device and face it would you want your stolen camera back 6 months later? For that matter who even wants their stolen car back? unless it's a classic. Everyone i know that gets their car back here in mexico after it was recovered wish they had the $$. Was run to the ground and smashed up. Imagine who was carrying your camera around.? I'll take my insurance money and get a new red.

Doesn't the redmote have Bluetooth or wifi? So you can controll your epic/scarlet hands free? Can't it do the same thing the iphone classic does with it's maps app?

Another even simpler solution would be to include the slot for a Kensington lock somewhere on the brain. Then at least conscientious assistants could lock up the most valuable piece when they leave their hotel room.

Just thinking out loud here but could software like Redcine-X, Premiere, Final Cut etc be programmed to recognize stolen PIN numbers via software updates and then send the IP address to Red who could then inform the authorities (this would of course rely on the computer in question being internet-connected)?

:iagree:

has anybody thought about a dongle like the ones from synchrosoft??
we're using for plugins and nuendo and other software

we could keep the dongle at all times on us or in a hidden place...

or make the remote being the dongle..., or putting the dongle into the redmote, and a pin on top of it, as a tracking via softwares like redcine, cs5, avid, scratch ....

a authorisation process on every new built , only downloadable if you log in with all your details....

a dongle and pin code, a tracker and we're 100% satisfied and sure nobody will ever be able to get he camera working.

not sure what that is...but hell, if everyone has to rely on some pin# in the field and some other security items and your not working on your computer and you need a new firmware or to download something durring a shoot, you'll be screwed. Ok...i'm in africa on a shoot in a remote location...get online to download latest firmware from someone else's computer, shit, don't have that long pin RED gave to me nor will i carry it with me every place i go...don't even carry my banking info let alone know it--it's storred in a file on a secure drive--with my RED and other security keys....Wow, the problems and complaints then....just secure your gear and remember shit happens--even lightning strikes~ but i'm not going to ask for a lighting rod module. Wait, we do have lots of hurricanes in southern mexico--RED, can you think about a lighting rod module for storm chasers!
just lock your stuff up and get it insured. life has no guarantees.

BELOW is a photo of my security measure whilst in AFRICA in 2007 on a RED production. From South Africa to Botswanna in as rough a place you could imagine for thievery.....Loaded Truck---Loaded GUN! Try it if you think you can run faster than Mark Thorpe--he's an ex Fr.Foreign Legionnaire--can pull the bolt back and blow our your foot.

I can only ask that RED avoid what has happened with the SI2K. Rather than writing a novel, I'll just give one example:

On a high-profile commercial I did earlier this year, one of the company's SI2Ks connected to an unsecured wireless network and determined that some part of its own internal software was unregistered. It disabled the camera and that unit was forced to shut down for the day. It's funny in hindsight, but it was not so funny on that day.

Orbicule's Undercover software is about the best sort of low-risk security I've enjoyed employing on all of my machines. Its functionality doesn't require anything beyond what is in the Epic already: http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/
