  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

UNDERWORLD 4

Epic & Latex

Epic & Latex

I received permission from Lakeshore Entertainment and producer James McQuaide to show a frame from the Underworld 4 3D EPIC DI test. This was shot on the Element Technica Epic Atom 3D rig with 2 Epic cameras capturing 5K 16:9 @ RC 3:1. The images in 2D are fantastic. In 3D, Epic images are simply hard to describe. -Having the amount of oversampled resolution that Epic delivers is plowing the way for the most advanced and highest fidelity 3D capture available. We can debayer the images in greater resolution than the end DCI projection (2048x858) which allows us to perform convergence adjustments in DI that are resolution penalty-free. The improved image sharpness, combined with the Epic cleanliness and resolution makes the 3D experience even better. Everyone attending the 3D DI test including Lakeshore was stunned by the pictures. Here is a small frame grab of the infamous suit that we can share.

Nice :)

Does anyone know the roll out Schedule for the Epics, I need mine, I got some gigs coming up.

Hehe, I think that saying that "WE ALL" want our Epics is "THE UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE CENTURY: ;)

Been that IMO no camera has ever been as Anticipated and Wanted as EPIC!!

Epic-M already started Shipping, Epic-X stage II should start in February as announced with ramping up
to higher Production numbers in April.

Thanks for sharing Michael, that image looks really nice. Can't wait to see more images from Epic.

Glad to be sharing this with you guys... thanks michael!
Appreciate that.

You're right Ketch lovelly blacks.

cheers mattes

happy new year for all of you guys and congratulations for all hard work RED family.

Any chance reduser could implement a thankyou button like on other boards? would make it more efficient.

Hi everyone ! I'm not a "RedUser" (though I know this camera because I studied in a cinema school for one year 3 years ago), but just a big french Underworld fan. I own the biggest french fan community forum dedicated to the Underworld saga (http://www.underworld-re.com/) for french speakers.

I just would like to thank you for all those informations you gave on this topic about the cameras that will be used to record the movie. It's very interesting. But I've got one question :

Are the cameras used to film Underworld 4 similar to the one used to film Avatar (Vincent Pace Camera, something like that) ?

No. Is a straightforward answer to that. The live action in Avatar was shot with essentially modified Sony F950 cameras, however over 60% was obviously CG.

Back to the camera though. Although the rig is quite a feat within itself, it will not compare (in image acquisition alone) to the quality of the EPIC Atom rig. The very basic reasons are first and formost Epic's capture in raw. which allows for far more flexibility after the fact and uses the REDCODE codec which is as close to uncompressed as is practical for image acquisitions, for 99% of applications. It is capturing on a 5K sensor in comparison to 1080p (which is six times more resolution).

That is just for starters, without even getting into the additional dynamic range (including High Dynmic Range motion -HDRx) or the size of the rig itself.

Tim Hole > Thank you for your answer ! I didn't understand everything, but the picture you shared explains the whole thing. 5k, wooo, that's hyper mega high definition lol ^^

But there is something I'm not sure to have well understood : will Underworld 4 be directly shot in 3D, or will it be converted in 3D during post-production ?

from the first post: "And being an S3D show, that we can put two EPICs on an Atom rig and hand-hold a shot, frees us to both practically and creatively shoot the picture exactly as we want."

They clearly shoot in 3D by simply using setups of two EPICs.
And let me add this, there is no better way to shoot 3D. ;-)
