  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

UNDERWORLD 4

I saw it yesterday.

I was underwhelmed with the projection. It was way to dark! Also 24 fps flicker took me out of 3D at times.
The 3D looked good though, best I've seen so far in Zürich. I just hope that Cameron/Jackson (or whoever) fix the problems asap.

As for the movie: Nice action packed showing overall, but I feel it could have been 'meatier'.

A heads up for those tracking this thread.

Tomorrow night we are hosting the first of what is planned to be a semi-regular event here at RED Studios Hollywood. Since the EPIC cameras are working on so many notable projects, we've decided to do some in depth viewing, learning and discussion on some key projects, covering some of the working processes on these projects, with those that worked on them. Here are the details for the first event, that happens to be focused on Underworld Awakening 3D that is out in theaters worldwide now.

Seating for these events are limited, so if you are interested in attending tomorrow night, RSVP today as soon as you can - details are below to RSVP via email.

Looking forward to an interesting evening.

+ Ted

Blood Flow and Work Flow: An In-Depth Look at the DI Process for the 3D hit Underworld: Awakening shot in 5K resolution on RED EPIC cameras

Company 3's Siggy Ferstl offers a look at What Happened After the Shooting Wrapped

RED Digital Cinema and Company 3 invite you to view 3D clips of Underworld: Awakening followed by a lively discussion with Company 3 Senior Colorist, Siggy Ferstl, who graded the Epic footage for the 3D, 3D IMAX and 2D releases and Ted Schilowitz from RED. Find out how the master colorist worked with cinematographer Scott Kevan's brilliant camerawork with the new 5K sensor and see how the team was able to help create the film's contrasty environment in a way that overcame the limitations of today's 3D projection systems.

The date: Wednesday, February 1
The place: Red Digital Studios, 846 N Cahuenga Blvd. in Hollywood
Reception begins at 6:30. Clips and discussion at 7
Seating is limited, please RSVP to Breanne Botticella -*bre at red.com*-*
Parking map will be sent to RSVP list 24 hours before the event

Hi Ted. Has the online video of this come out?

Thanks.

I saw UW4 in 4k 3D (Cinemark's XD theater in Arundel Mills, MD) and Hugo in 3D HD (same theater complex) one after the other.

UW4 was obviously heavily colored, but it looked good, and had this sort of wet, silky look that I'm thinking was either due to or (perhaps better put) enabled by the 4K. I've given up on seeing 3D movies that weren't shot in 3D, they just have too many artifacts and paper cutout looks (and tend to give me a head ache). Hugo had beautiful tones and textures, but after UW4 in 4K, it just looked soft. Hugo was obviously a better movie in almost every other way, but I wonder what could have been done with it in 4K.

As for my own humble Oscar prediction, GirlWtDT(US) was stunning, had a new look, and made better use of soft filters than any feature film I can think of, and I would vote for it if I was a member. But it's accomplishments were subtle, and judging by the last two Best Cinematography Oscars, it was lacking in special effects, which Hugo, was not. Too bad, but with it's resolution in all detentions, RED cameras are better suited to DFX work, so I'm expecting a win next year for a RED film.

I didn't realize Underworld 4 was shot on Epic. It looked great. The 3D was fantastic too. The 3D in Hugo was clearly more primitive or experimental. What I mean, I found them taking daring leaps with stereoscopic choices, and I sometimes found my eyes converging too much. I walked out of that screening rubbing my eyes. In American Cinematographer, they even allude to taking 3D to the limit on some shots. I def noticed. Not to say it wasn't a great movie. The second half was spectacular.

But I thuought Underworld 4 looked amazing. The grade was sick. Dark, lush, rich. So, so good. And, kinda a fun movie. Actually, a really fun movie! It was a popcorn flick! My favourite!

Yep I also walked out rubbing my eyes after Hugo. Wished I had seen it in 2D as I found the 3D distracting and it didn't seem to add anything (It was a really great movie in all other respects). Am yet to see anything in 3D that wouldn't have looked better in 2D...

Transformers 3D is pretty awesome, if only because Michael Bay kept the 3D effect very limited, so it was only used to enhance the clarity, rather than to provide over the top in-your-face effects. A remarkable piece of restraint, especially considering that restraint is not one of Bay's known qualities :-)

Watched (2D version of course) few minutes of the beginning yesterday at my friends house. Looked pretty nice. I mean, it's Kate Beckinsale on tight leather suit so it can't look anything but nice :)

btw, I saw comparison screenshots from the 3D and 2D Blu-rays and the 3D version was a lot worse. It had less detail and colors where off and faded.

Saw the movie yesterday. The lighting for the most part was awesome. The whole look was very good for this movie.
