Good evening,

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Darin Wooldridge.
I'm a long time linux resolve user. I started beta testing the mac version in August. I use both platforms daily and find it a very powerful tool.

A little background on myself.
I've been a colorist for just over 13 years. Before that I was a Telecine assistant, Digital tape operator, standards convertor, laser disk mastering operator, vault manager, and driver.

During my past 22 years in post production I have worked for the following companies. Laser Edit /spectra image, Foto-kem / foto-tronics,
Ascent media and htv . I currently work as a DI colorist for Technicolor in Hollywood.

I have used the red user group in the past and decided to sign up this evening.

Welcome Darin. Your insight will be appreciated here.

Nice one Darin. Welcome!

Welcome to the fold!

Welcome, Darin!

I'm planning on purchase Mac DaVinci version with color surface and decent HD monotor (TvLogic XVM-245), my current goal is mostly HD/2K, REDCODE and DPX files.
How can you compare performance of mac/linux systems working with HD/2K material?
Does Mac strong enough to maintain stable realtime grading, if using with 4Gbps FC RAID, RedRocket and Quadro 4000? Or should I invest more to go with scalable Linux solution?

Hello Nikolai,

For 2k dpx and red I would say go linux. The mac / video card is running out of steam and not optimized with the software / hardware combo to grade and play above an HD raster. You can however do as blackmagic suggests and make proxies in hd to deal with anything larger. R3d is a little different. It taxes the cpu to debayer and is slow.. You can reduce the quality of the debayer to help with the playback but the image starts to suffer. Add the redrocket card and your doing much better.
I start with a complete debayer pass to dpx then start grading..

In short.
The mac resolve can and does work. If 2k real time playback without extra steps is your goal the linux version is a much better solution.

Hi Micah,

Hi Micah,

Welcome! Where can we see some of your color work?

I've been fortunate to have worked for major post houses my entire colorist career. Unfortunately the tv and feature film world doesn't allow me access to materials to promote myself. I have started a "reel" on several occasions with material I have been granted permission to use. I never seem to get it finished. :beatdeadhorse5: Seems i'm always scrambling for more storage and space and hooking up new gear for the latest project. First thing to get deleted is my "reel". lol Oh yea juggling the job, wife, and three kids it my other excuse..:nopity:

imdb shows some of my work.

Nice body of word Darin, Welcome aboard.

Just for clarity, is a good mac Pro with Red Rocket not capable of dealing with 2k post? I will be adding resolve and Storm shortly. Just curious.

Hello Frank,
Thanks for the kind words.
Yes the mac resolve can deal with 2k and even 4k post.
It has real time playback limitations with files above the hd 1920x1080 raster.
You can, as black magic suggests, make hd proxies from your source 2k files to achieve real time playback.

Don't use the scopes in Resolve if you want RT, they are really slowing things down. We get pretty good performance on our 2009 Mac Pro model with GT120/GTX285.
Resolve still works best with DPX if you own a juicy RAID.

Very True Uli..
Stay away from the internal scopes all together. Not only do they kill performance they do not match the output of the sdi / hdmi feeds when using hd legal settings.

Unfortunately the tv and feature film world doesn't allow me access to materials to promote myself.

That's why I've never had or even done a colorist reel, either (I did have one as a visual effects supervisor). Colorist reels are generally done only in the short form world (i.e., commercials, music videos) where concepts such as clearances are generally laughed at. In the world of features and television series, these things are taken pretty seriously, and reels are not expected. Lists of credits and/or personal references are, however.
