  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION 1.8" and 2.5"

Hey Carlos, when you placed your order was there only a "Place Deposit" button? That's what I saw when I ordered mine... but now there's a "Buy Now" button. I'm sure the good folks in the sales dept will sort us out.

Red stations have an eSata port and so does the Nexto drive. I understand the Nexto uses it only for output, to duplicate the internal/source media, but it could be an easy firmware fix to consider it another source media. Maybe it already does, I haven't used one... does anyone know if this is possible?

I currently use the Nexto to offload CF cards on smaller productions, and they work great. However, the eSata on the Nexto is only for offloading- currently there is no option to see it as another source media. I have no clue if it would be possible to update via firmware or not. But that is an interesting idea.

However, needing a Red station and a Netxo, kind of defeats the purpose of an all in one unit. Especially, as the Red Station would need its' own power.

Also, is there an easy way to power the red stations on battery power?

Not that I'm aware of yet ...

you're asking me to buy a paperweight... an honest to God, $250 aluminum paperweight, with the hope that "when it's ready," despite "subject to change", I will someday be able to use it for something more than a paperweight.

I just ordered two paperweights, Kyle.

BTW ... I just got a chance to shoot in Utah. Such a beautiful place you live in.

Ordered my "paperweight" as well.

But I hope the Red Store will make some sort of option to draw from monies already on account, rather than only offer the option of cc or wire transfer.

The deposit is only $25 + shipping so I used my credit card instead of contacting my bemb squad rep: for future purchases, the "pay from funds on account" button would save time.

Any word on if the 2.5" unit will support thicker 12mm drives like the 1TB 2.5" from WD?

I'd like to second or third this...it would be good to know the full specs on insertable media for the 2.5" drive. I'd hate to try something only to break the reader.

The question here is if using two SSD Station readers at the same time will have double the download speed,
or at list one and a half tome as fast as downloading the SSD's one at the time ;)

I believe SSD speed is not the bottleneck. The writing speed of your destination media is more likely to be the limiting factor.

Yeah, totally depends on your destination. The SSD's ought to give you around 250mb/sec each transfer over eSATA. You can generally get a bit over 600mb/sec on an SATA bus so no problem there, but you need to be writing to some sort of raid (or internal SSD's) to realize the benefit of dual modules.

Cool,

then will double up on the SSD Stations ;)

The modules are 3Gbps SATA. If you connect each to their own SATA channel, then the only bottleneck for incoming data will be the media itself.

As you point out, your destination is going to be a bigger concern. If you have two SSD modules connected to two separate SATA channels (non-multiplied ports), then you would need a RAID or storage system capable of writing about 500-600MB/s in order to offload the two SSDs at full speed.

I think your idea is fantastic Steve! I would like one! A self-powered, rugged, robust, all-in-one solution for off-loading. However I would like the option of checking clips with the users own external monitor through an hdmi or hsdi port, rather than a built in monitor which might increase the cost and size of the product.

That is where the product formerly know as "RED Ray" comes into play. I would like to see a module in the RED Station form-factor that will enable us to play back stuff over HDMI/DVI and/or HD-SDI directly from one or all of the modules. That would rock. A LOT!

When are those of us that put down deposits on the 1.8 Stations getting them delivered?

Both 1.8" and 2.5" have BUY NOW or PLACE DEPOSIT options on RED.com. I know they were both there since I pushed them live after placing a test order with each option as part of QC :)

Either locks you in place in the delivery queue at date/time order is placed. Paying in full up front does not change queue position, but usually means it can ship faster when ready for delivery because we do not have to settle the remaining balance before shipping....
