  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION 1.8" and 2.5"

Sony have been letting everyone know that they've been developing 1Tb SxS cards that right now are branded as SR-solid state and are intended to transition from HDCamSR tape to solid state (there are upgrade kits for the SRW-9000 camera to retrofit the back end of the camera).

As pure speculation I'd imagine an SR-solid state (that really rolls off the tongue) module for Alexa that would likely allow for 4444 ProRes @ 60fps or ArriRaw @60fps recording in-camera.

Don't think they'll be cheap but neither are those Red SSD's.

What would really be fantastic is if the red ssd's had some sort of adapter from the custom red connector back to a regular sata/esata connection so we weren't forced to purchase the red card reader....

you are buying the red stations so you will not complain about corrupt Data, because most of the time its due to bad offloading devices/copy stations

agreed, and i would listen to what red says about readers they recommend - ie. lexar fw800 card readers which have worked great for the last 3 years ( i own three ). My point is buying off the shelf is sometimes more convenient then waiting for backordered red parts. Let's not forget the sometimes problematic hardware. ie. fw800 ports on the red drives.

i see, red stations shouldnt be on back order :)
every red item should be in the store when its available in mucho quantities

Yup. But if you do happen to have a problem you have Red's excellent support to back you up. Also, the Red Station modules are now the only qualified offloading devices, even for CF.

red's support is the best.
moving to the next level with epic/mx/hdrx and ssd is huge.
is it available through pinewood too?

Excuse my ignorance,

Do i need the 1.8" or the 2.5" for the Epic X ?

Thanks

Antoine

Ordered. Thanks guys!

Looking forward using the new media.

While I appreciate the initiative, this is really frustrating, and I think a growing indicator of some of my concerns with RED. I can understand the desire to start selling these things, and begin moving through inventory, but at the same time, you're asking me to buy a paperweight... an honest to God, $250 aluminum paperweight, with the hope that "when it's ready," despite "subject to change", I will someday be able to use it for something more than a paperweight.

Without any media to put inside it, these are a worthless purchase. What's worse, without any indication of a release date for media, its a wasteful, and irresponsible purchase.

I've got two RED Drives that are experiencing more problems each time they come back from rental, and I'm desperate to replace them with anything that can give me more than an 8-min take.

It would be responsible for RED to do a little more careful planning and coordinating to ensure that when you roll out a product, you make sure ALL of the pieces are in place to support the purchase of its products.

I'm sorry if this sounds overly harsh, its been a rough morning as I just checked in my kit to find a drive labeled "Won't Mount". I appreciate the lengths RED has made in it's effort to push boundaries and advance our industry by light-years, but stupid shit like this, and the fanboydom that surrounds, supports, and encourages decisions like this is just... well... blasphemy from the Gods themselves.

You don't NEED either one as you'll still be able to use legacy media, however you won't be able to use new formats as the data rates will exceed the capability of that media. To take full advantage, you need to move to 1.8 SSD drives. The 2.5 right now is an offload solution.

OK Steve,

So if i understand correctly, the onboard Epic SSD module is 1.8", then i only need the 1.8 SSD ?

So the Epic wont have a inboard 2.5" SSD module ?

Thanks

Antoine

to answer you question, yes, you'll only need the 1.8" SSD for shooting on the epic.

the 2.5" is for archiving, backups. extra space.

Not to speak for Steve (Hi Steve!) but correct, no onboard 2.5" Its merely an OFFLOAD option. Say your LAPTOP hard drive is full. You simply offload the 1.8" to the 2.5" MAG via your laptop. (hence why people are asking if there will soon be a control module that can make that transfer withOUT a laptop) WHY? think remote location where you just dont want to lug your laptop.

Valid points Kyle. There is certainly a transition happening here, from legacy media to these new SSD modules. And although not ideal that the RED RAIDs went out of circulation before the new media was in place, I do think RED is committed to the new 1.8" SSD format. I don't see the 1.8" suddenly disappearing and the reader being useless. I have purchased it to ensure that when the media does arrive I have a reader ready to go. Perhaps that can be seen as a little backwards, but not knowing how many of these are in stock, I also don't want to take the chance I can't get one when I need it.

Everything else in the Red Station is useful today, including the base, CF reader, and the 2.5" module. The 1.8" completes the system. It's a qualified system ready and waiting for media.

I expect SSD to be rolling out in the not too distant future based on indications we have seen in various threads. Until then, RED RAIDs and CF are still working okay here.

Steve

Someone help me understand how this all works, please.

That is, if I have a Red Station Redmag 1.8" and a Red Station Redmag 2.5", by using a computer I can offload from my 1.8" Redmag to my Redmag2.5" storage?

To carry this further, if I have a Red Station Base, can I do the same offload as a standalone?... that is, without using the computer as intermediary?
