  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

It's also a reasonable assumption that if, other than the rebranding, Scarlet S35 hasn't significantly changed since it was slated for manufacture in Asia -- that is, there was no reason, other than a name change, to move manufacture to the U.S. -- it would still be manufactured in Asia. Everything is subject to change.

That is certainly possible if not unlikely.

If you are tooled up and supplied to build Epic here, then spinning out another line in the same factory, minus a few components has got to be more economical than duplicating the entire facility elsewhere.

If Epic-S comes in between $8k-5k under Epic-X then everything else seems to fall into place. Does RedOne fit between the two Epics or will it be too feature deficient to sit there? If it has the horsepower, or room to add it, RedOne could have longer legs than most would expect.

I know most folks don't want to hear it, but I always expected an Epic to replace RedOne entirely. The only surprise is that it appears "Epic-S" will be that replacement, and upgrading RedOne owners will be getting a significant upgrade in Epic-X instead of an evolved RedOne. In that scenario, everything makes sense to me. Epic-X, Epic-S and Scarlet 2/3 fixed and interchangeable... That's it. The hand machined Epic is an LTD (For Limited Edition).

Will there be both Epic-XFF and Epic-SFF? We will have to wait and see.

The changes made from Scarlet S35 to EPIC-S are significant. It used to be on the original Scarlet platform and we moved it to the more comprehensive EPIC platform a couple of months ago. Big differences. Manufacturing in the US will cost more than Asia... but prices in Asia have also risen quite a bit in the last year or so.

Our biggest problem was announcing the program with one set of circumstances, being late... and the world changed.

I read this to mean the physical size of the Epic S will be the same as the Epic X. Correct?

Honestly I don't understand why there needs to be two cameras so much alike, instead of spreading the cards a little.

EDIT: I don't understand why Red needs to make those two Epics MORE alike...

@ Jesper

Seems like a good niche to fill, to me. Sometimes you just gotta have high frame rates and thus the big limousine Epic X. Other times you can get by without the high horsepower and make do with the less costly sport model.

Understood. But after all, what we can figure out is the Epic-S is a new camera that will replace the project of another one, Scarlet S35.

I dislike to have to say it but I'd rather have the Scarlet S35 in any way whatsoever. Especially now with this information from yours that only stands and reforces my idea.

Well looks like I'm stuck to the rental market. That or the not so great sony and rent epic when project demands it. I was hoping for a barebones epic that would be within my financial realm. Maybe I'm wrong but it doesn't seem that way. Look forward to renting one of these bad boys though.

Once the complete Epic line has been announced and production ramps up, will
1) the R1-MX continue to be available?
2) Will there be anymore hardware updates to the R1?
3) What level of technical and accessory support will the camare have?

There is obviously a market for a bare-bone sensor without the bells and whistles. External hard drive. Nikon or canon mounts, no touch screen. Battery belt. 2k $5000 price point.

I happen to have a nice pile of coal already... Who wants to buy? :)

Anyway, this discussion is pretty F'd up... I don't care what Jim wants to name the cameras, he can call them whatever he wants. If I have any say in it, I would suggest he names them whatever will make them roll off the assembly line the fastest.

I think EPIC-S, EPIC-X and EPIC-M are fine. Anyone who follows the forum, even casually, should understand. If they spell out what the letter designators mean, people will understand. I preferred EPIC-Light, but I understand that some of the more insecure types will have an issue with anything "light". So, on that note, I think Jim should consider naming the EPIC 617 "The Compensator". ...Anyone want to compare "sensor" sizes? I bet mine's bigger.

Although I almost always agree with you, here I disagree.

I deal with clients directly, people like agency art directors and music producers who are not always cine-tech savvy (it is not their job, but mine). If they see a big "Light" logo on the Epic we are using, this will lead to a series of unpleasant conversations. It would be as bad as having a "Quality Reduced" or "For Cheap Prods You Don't Really Care About Only" logo on there, as far as they would be concerned.

Imagine a hip-hop producer with all his homies, and how much they will be impressed by having their video shot with some "Light-s--t". "Yo man, we don't roll that way - we go Heavy - now go get me the good camera before I shoot your ass, get me the Epic Deluxe High Roller Edition. That's what I want."

Perception is always reality, and must be handled with great care.

That said, here are some naming suggestions that are utterly stupid, but, I think, funny.

And that's the shizzle!

And... you are not the only one.

...Even Arri have Arricam Lite and it is so common in the industry to name the "lighter" less featured model just as a "Light (Lite)".
Than simply everybody has got a message what is going on there...

Perception is always reality, and must be handled with great care.

The Arri difference is being film cameras there is no image connection
to Lite. The film not the camera is the image. Lite refers to weight.
In a digital camera..the camera is the film..the camera is the image.

Arricam ST = 18.19 lbs.
Arricam LT = 11.57 lbs.

So a film camera that weights a third less it's a big deal..you want to
put it in the name. One easily can imagine what conclusion an actor..producer
or director jumps to when they find out "Lite" Epic weighs same as Epic X.

The importance of words lost on some here..but not
I think Mr. Jannard...he recently started a thread on what the
word Professional meant to people and it ran for 30 pages.
