  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S35 is now...

I think the correct solution would've been to keep the price point but reduce the features. That wasn't an option, of course, because the internet would have BURST INTO FLAMES.
I think the best solution (for us, not Red) is to keep it at $8,000-$8,500 with pretty much the originally announced feature set plus HDRx. Raising the price substantially without a commensurate increase in features just because you changed the name would smack of arrogant cynicism (i.e., the "It's got to be better because it costs more" BS). That would also be the antithesis of Red's approach with the original R1.

My guess about the upcoming 'exciting Scarlet news' is that we're getting a compromise. We get a 'New Scarlet' at the ~$7-8k point but 'Old Scarlet' moves up to 'Epic Light' rather than vanishing.
Do you mean a 2/3-inch Scarlet or an S35 one? If the former, there's already an increasingly expensive model. If the latter, why muddy the waters with yet another S35 model?

Jim said clearly that it will also have more features.

The problem is, I think, that the Scarlet-audience (including me) is more concerned about the original price then with increasing features, because I think many of us found the S35 Scarlet already had more then enough features and our budgets aren't really increasing.

If it's about Jim deciding that selling an S35 at 7-8k would mean a loss instead of a profit, well, then I think it's normal that he raises the price.
But don't forget more volume sales with a lower price - which is I guess a part why the RED was prices as low as it was.
But I'll let Jim do the accounting.

(3) Wait for the FF35 6K Epic. This would become sort of my own personal "VistaVision" camera, I could use it for landscape shots, use cheaper still camera lenses on it (where focus-pulling on actors will be less of an issue), occasionally use it as a C-camera, plus it's still small and light relative to some other cameras... but only get a minimal amount of accessories rather than push it as a B-camera package. Plus it would be 6K, great for wide shots.

Why go epic then? FF35 (Scarlet) in the last spec release could still shoot 30fps. I wouldn't think you would need highspeed for vistas and you could cut the price by over 50%.

Other than HDRx, none has been mentioned. I'm going out on a limb, but unless Red didn't think much about Scarlet S35 since the big announcements a year ago, they originally didn't have much new planned for it, apart from keeping its design compatible with its physical twin, Epic-X. Jim has already said Epic Lite's frame and data rates will be lower than Epic-X's, although a boost to at least RC100 will probably occur to keep it on par with Scarlet 3K. I got the feeling that HDRx would add about $1,000. But what surprises are left that would justify a (as many here, including me, expect) substantial price increase?

It's not that raising the price only enough to ensure a decent profit that bothers people here. It's the feature creep -- at ever increasing additional cost and delay -- that some find irksome.

Considering the fact that Epic is almost ready, I have to presume that the more alike they are the faster "Epic Light" will come to market.

This whole development could potentially open up a new, less expensive upgrade path than buying an entirely new brain. If "Light" can be upgraded with the addition of a board or two and a software update, that would be great.

Ow, I definately agree:

I also personally don't want to have a Scarlet that shoots even higher framerates and higher datarates. I want a camera in my hands that I can afford and the specs of the original S35 Scarlet were perfect for me.
But I'm not the one to make those decisions.

I agree with Mathieu in a lot of ways the spec for the S35 now Epic Light was spot on, kit it out then if you need higher specs just higher an epic body etc. But use the Epic Light for day to day corporate or indie, pop promo budgets etc.

As for costs! thats Jim call no one elses, as everyone knows he is price sensitive and rightly so.

But it will be interesting as to date the lowest body cost RED has produced to market was $ 17,500 now $ 24,500, so all we can do is sit and wait or just go and spend our money else where if where not happy with his price or just get fed up waiting, its all about choice. Yours and RED's.

Interesting times.

Damn, not everyone, but there sure is a bunch of ungrateful people here....

I for one am grateful that thanks to RED I didn't have to plunk hundreds of thousands of dollars on a spirit...

Just for that I am grateful and willing to wait, and even endure some price increases. Sometimes I wish Red would under-promise and over-deliver (I believe they are doing it right now, but only hindsight will prove me right) that way all the naysayers wouldn't have much to complain about.

Jim & team, we had a core business which was film transfer, when we saw the red (and understood what it stood for), we embraced it and made it part of our specialty, even though we knew full well it would kill our film x-fer business. Guess what? we stuck with RED and it has been AWESOME for us, both from a business POV and from the Fun side of POST. Keep up the great work, and PLEASE keep rocking the boat, this makes everyone keep on their toes (or fall of the boat!) :-)

Above all, keep having fun doing what you love, and this goes to all of you out there!

Happy shooting (or posting in our case).

Sorry to duplicate the post from another thread, but wanted to reach as many people as possible.

How about:
EPIC V8
EPIC V12

Actually the car industry has known how to handle multiple
product lines at different price levels for a very long time.

If the BMW 3 series was named BMW 3 Lite...don't think they
would be selling very many of them.

Actually for many people these cameras in fact are equal or
more than they would spend on a car. So it's an apt analogy.

As of now... we are considering:

EPIC-S (from the old Scarlet name... or STANDARD model)
EPIC-X
EPIC-M (for monster machined)

Does that work for everyone? :-)

Wouldn't mind if you chose to call the S model the SS model, sort of like the "Super Sport" throwback autos.

Those are all great Jim, simple and straight forward! Also still very glad that the Scarlet S35 (AKA Epic-S) is joining the Epic family ;)

On a side note it's going to be really nice to have a camera line that isn't named using a seemingly random numbering system: Canon 5d, Panasonic HVX200, HPX170, Sony EX1 & EX3 etc.

Works for me. Eagerly awaiting the EPIC-S. Thanks Jim!

This is definitely my favorite so far. It will help people remember that the Epic-S used to be Scarlet. Epic-X sounds extreme so people will remember it is the one that does everything.

I like it because it makes it easy to explain to clients.

Sounds good. A lot better that Light.

Will there be a plain old Epic any more?
