  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Pre-production EPIC-Ms...

Tonaci is correct, so at 158 you have pretty dam good chance of getting one ;)

also Mark, were do you come out in thinking that you will not get your stage II Epic-X till 2012???

Stage II wil begin in February and 158 sure is a early in off number to most likely
be on the first few butches of cameras to go out.

I haven't kept track.. I know you want in Ketch.. are you in too Shawn?

I am anxiously waiting to receive some sort of Epic-M response email after the holidays are over. =) I know Brent is going to do a mass email to those interested. If and when I get a confirmation, I'm going to have a celebration =).

I have submitted my request to Kelly. I need to know more info, namely...
1. How many EpicMs will there be? If there's only 30, then $58k is a bargain for such a limited run. But if there are 500 units produced, then maybe it's not so limited. Either way, still very cool.

2. How sure is Jim of a Feb release for my Stage 2 Epic?

So I'm hoping for more concrete info before a decision must be made.

Shawn,

Jim's last guess was less than 100 Epic Ms.

As for your second question.. things are always subject to change. So I think regardless of the answer you get, it will always be subject to change. If things go as planned, then we get to see stage 2s hit feb...but anything can happen.

With the EPIC-M probably limited to less than 100 units. It becomes an exclusive club. I asked early in this thread about priority based on RED One delivery date / camera number. Jim responded that it would be based on "history". Which seems to make the most sense. The EPIC-M will be the flagship of the upcoming line and they want to place these cameras where they will be highly visible and out working right away. To me, I took the "history" comment as meaning people who have contributed to the RED program and community over the past few years in a big way and who have helped make RED productions more visible to the world. Offhollywood, Steve Gibby, Dino and his legendary RED 0031, etc.. Shawn, I would hope you qualify as well. You have been here since the beginning and have always been a valuable contributor. Tonaci too -- you're doing some awesome stuff in Vietnam, based on everything I've seen.

Of course, these are just my opinions on "history". And if I'm right on this, then it seems to be the best way to determine who gets these few special cameras. If they simply went off RED One # or initial delivery date, then no one past #150 would probably get a chance.

Dammit!!! I take my first holiday in God-Knows-how-long and I miss the drop on this?!?
Email sent - fingers crossed.
Does this program sound a bit like Tattoo to anyone else??

Jeff, I think you're reading a lot into it, especially since Jim said that it would be only fair to go by customer number. This isn't the Tattoo, alpha-testing program, not to mention that many people have contributed while keeping low profiles. Besides, the guys you mentioned all have very low customer numbers.

Jeff, I think you're reading a lot into it,.

Am I?

Will the limited numbers of EPIC-M cameras be allocated based on RED One delivery date?

We'll accept requests/orders and allocate based on history.

Draw your own conclusions, or wait for an official response from Jim. But it seems that simply going off customer number / delivery date is not what's happening here. If that were the case, why would anyone beyond camera #200 with a delivery date past January of '08 even bother to apply? I can think of some big contributors with higher customer numbers, but I'm not going to mention any more names. Pointing fingers is probably a bad idea, even if I'm giving credit.

Without knowing how many buyers there are, or how many M cameras will be made (everything subject to change), it can only help Red to know who's in.

There's big contributors all up and down the line. Just seems like a big can of worms if it's the way you suggest.

I interpreted "history" to mean customer number plus variables such as being in good standing with Red. Of course it's just my interpretation.

I am on the same page with Jeff here. Back when the stages were first introduced.. it was made clear that Stage 1 was not intended for "camera traders" wanting to make a quick buck. I'm not sure if this still applies to these Epic-M's.

Perhaps Jim can clarify whether these cameras are transferable. I'm thinking likely not.

Well, that's a seperate issue Tonaci. I agree with you 100% that people shouldn't be buying these cameras for the purpose of flipping them.

Sony, Canon and the other guys have to be laughing their asses off over this one... maybe we should take a vote to see how we handle this?

We'll go by history... numbers of delivered cameras and I'll probably make some exceptions. And I probably won't ask permission.

We have been open about what we are doing and most are giving good suggestions and feedback. But a few are pushing this too far.

We are going to run our business now. If we do a good job, we'll have customers. If we don't we'll lose them. That's how it works.

Will there be any difference between a hand built Epic and Production Line built Epic. Can they be used in a matched 3D pair ?

No performance difference and yes to being used together in a 3D rig.
