  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Has anyone here experience with the LI190s battery from Globalmediapro.com? Over 2 hours of power at that price point does sound quite tempting?

I have seen references to globalmedia batteries on this forum, but not this specific battery.

Hey Martin,

Will the GMP LI190s charge on the RED charger?

General comment:

Getting the RED Charger and DC cable, and two LI190s would be essentially the same price (about $50 or so difference, shipping included).

If you get more LI190's, they're reduced in price further (even 4 takes them below $300 a piece).

Well, I got really excited thinking that maybe someone had figured out why not only the Gobalmediapro batteries didn't work on the RED, but also why the Batteries4Broadcast didn't work. However, when I voltmetered one of my B4B 150watt batteries I found out that the power wasn't connected to the same port pin as it was on the GMP batteries. Instead of the third pin port from the left being powered (which being clipped fixed the issue), the second pin port from the left on the B4B is what's powered. Do you all think that even though that pin port doesn't connect to the the camera, that somehow with it's wiring it's causing the same problem as the GMP batteries? I may email B4B with this site to see what they think.

Thanks,

Matthew

Matthew,

Does your battery connector look like this:

Yes it does. However, your extra powered port is the third from the left, whereas on the B4B batteries, it is the second from the left--which actually is not used by the RED cradle. However, I was wondering if how they wired the extra port is the reason that it's not working properly. Kevin at B4B said he'd contact the factory about why that might cause a problem and if they get one they think would work, they'll send me a test battery to try on out my RED. I tried opening up the battery, but I couldn't get the case apart. Otherwise, I would have opened up the case and snipped the wire that's to the extra powered port.

Matthew,

Getting the case to open takes some patience, and a bit of force. You have to squeeze the sides in, while pulling/wiggling the two case parts apart. This may take a while, as there is some hefty sticky tape inside the battery (that is if they are made like the GMP batteries).

...

Interesting to learn that there is apparently no standard as to how those ports are wired/powered up.

....

I finally got a reply from GMP, they are considering to change the wiring so that their batteries work with the R1 as well.

Still, I don´t understand why they changed the wiring in the first place, as older GMP batteries worked just fine with my R1.

....

Pierce,

In theory all chargers should work with all batteries, as long as they are made for the same chemicals. Since both the Red Bricks and the GMP use LiIon, I see no reason why they should not work together.

If you want to be extra safe, GMP also sells a number of chargers.

I bought one of their early models. After I received it, I opened it up to find out that there were only some very basic electronics inside - they do not seem to take the best care of your batteries. Now I only use that as a direct power supply to my Sony camera, and spent some money on a proper IDX charger, which charges up pretty much anything I trhow at it.

Hello Martin and everyone. Thanks, Martin for your reply to my PM. I added a comment to your blog where you show the process on converting the GMP batteries to work on the RED. Just to add some more noise to the mix here...I contacted Al at Hired Gun Video in New York re: their batteries. They apparently are the same as B4B's and he said that the factory has agreed to change the wiring so that their batteries can be used on the RED...and still have a 12 month warranty, but he then said...they will then NOT be able to be charged on IDX chargers.

Yikes...why can't this be standardized? I do really like these "UnRED" batteries as they have that 12v out connector on the side and I have a bunch of 12v stuff to power in the field...just need to make a few cables to be able to use these batts and save weight in the field, etc. By the way...Al said that these are high quality batteries using LG cells (or Sanyo, I think).

Question...can you charge RED batts on an IDX charger? Seems from what I have learned above that you probably can't. If you can...more confusion to the mix.

Larry

Will these work with the RED charger, or would it be better to get a different charger to be safe?

In order to make the battery life longer, original chager from the same factory with the battery will be be best choice and most recommend.

Please check Dynacore 190Wh battery, the performance is very good according to users' feedbacks, maybe of your interest.

Dynacore camera batteries nail to first class SANYO cells from the very first product. The New DS range camera batteries are especially manufactured according to European regulation in every details.

1. SANYO cells are made in Japan, same cells as IDX battery.
2. Battery pack is assemble in China, with same safty technique management as Anton Bauer.
3. Quality control is proceed in Germany.
4. Comply to European electronic control with CE,ROHS certificate.
5. UN38.3 test for IATA regulation assure safe transportaion by flight.

Now the latest product LED video light also earn a very large market, basic info about it, you can check at web:

My altered GMP batteries charge just fine on the IDX charger.

What I find curious is that older GMP batteries work just fine on the RED1, only the new ones seem to need the modification.

This suggests that GMP has changed the internal design at some point.

Okay, I finally found the issue with the Batteries4Broadcast batteries. Kevin at B4B's sent me a new battery that was supposed to work with the RED (but not charge on IDX chargers), but when I stuck it on it didn't work. However, I figured out the issue and exactly how to fix it (which seems to be the same solution as the GMP batteries.) If you look at the attached image, you'll see that I've marked the terminals as 1 through 6. The issue is that normal v-mount batteries have terminals 5 & 6 powered, and the B4B batteries have terminals 3, 4, 5, & 6 powered. When you insulate terminals 3 & 4, the B4B batteries work just great on the RED. When I tried insulating those same ports on the RED battery I found out that either port 3 or 4 (or both) is used by the RED to communicate with the chip in the battery about power usage. Since the B4B batteries were sending power on those ports, the RED was totally confused and wouldn't run. So I've emailed Kevin at B4B to let him know the problem so they will start having their batteries made the v-mount standard and will work with the RED. I also asked about having already bought batteries modified to work.

Does this make sense?

The other solution for the B4B batteries is to use their hot swap mount. If you use that the batteries will work just fine, and you never have to power down.

Yeah, I've got one that I've been using. But often I don't want to use it because I am shooting handheld and the dual v-mount adapter adds over a pound of weight to the camera. Not to mention that if you are working in tight spaces (like the inside of a car) it adds unnecessary bulk to the camera size.

Not to mention that the added height also adds to the center of gravity which effects the load that the tripod head "sees"...

Have you heard anythign back from Kevin regarding the modification for the batteries? I'd sure like to be able to use the battery straight on the Red plate ...
