I just saw a post, that was signed by a person, describing himself as:
"Colorist, Contractor, Realtor".
That perfectly explains, why rates for color grading work are a joke, as is majority of work posted by these, so called, "colorists".
My rant for a day...:biggrinjester:

So you're saying this guy isn't a real colorist? Or that he single-handedly brought down the rates for grading work?

You assume it refers to motion picture colourists? There's a whole raft of colour related decor and interior design positions that are more closely aligned with those other two skills than colour for film or TV.
Don't forget the telephone sanitizers, middle managers, hairdressers, insurance salesmen and public relations executives. And that woman who did Flint's colours in Roger and Me.

I think colorist in this case may refer to interior decoration or design
since this person also mentions being a contractor and a realtor.

The term "Colorist" is not strictly a film/video term.
I think hair and makeup use the term as well too.

I still agree with the gist of your post though.
Magic Bullet and Color have produced a bit of fly by night "colorists".

Oops. a kines posted right before I did.
Sorry to be redundant.

You're welcome to read into this whatever you wish. I'm sure, there are a lot of takers for low contractor/editor/composer/gynecologist/colorist rates. If you don't find this peculiar, then, I guess, I'm wrong posting this :-)

No, you made it quite clear...

And you seem to contradict yourself. You're both implying with "colorists" that he isn't a real colorist, and that he is a real colorist somehow bringing down rates because he has other jobs. You've failed to support the latter. It's called an ASSumption. Sorry, my shift key gets stuck from time to time.

You're wrong for posting this because you made a leap and a judgement without providing any reason for doing so. It's not this guy who is cheapening this industry IMO, it's people like you on boards like this who continue to publicly flog people here with no concrete reason to do so.

No need to be so sensitive Vladimir:nono:
All I see, is you, Vladimir, flogging me publicly for simply expressing my thoughts. If you want to call yourself a Colorist, DP, Podiatrist, Production Artist, Cinematographer, Realtor, Editor, whatever, go ahead, nobody's stopping you. Just make sure you can actually do it:tongue_smilie:

Let's play nice, guys.

Who knows, maybe the guy is a good colorist, contractor and realtor.

Good point. ...Hehe, you would get a kick out of my resume. :)

They're probably bitching about this guy over at the hairdressing internet forums right now.

"SO ANYONE CAN CALL THEMSELVES A COLORIST THESE DAYS. I WANT TO SEE HOW HE HANDLES A BLOW DRY CUT AND THEN BLEACH THE LATEST TWO TONE SUMMER COLOR STYLE FROM MILAN *three fingersnaps* mm-mm-mm."

My 2 year old daughter is the best "colourist" I have seen to date.(Note the U in COLOUR as I am Australian!!!)

My daughter never colours over the lines in her pictures.

I don't care if he's a hair stylist or an interior decorator on the side if he does good work. I've met as many people who are terrible at their one and only profession as those who are incompetent at many.

These days most people shop for a house via the realty company's virtual tour so maybe being a realtor/colorist makes sense after all.

These days, if I'm in need of a DP, I first hit the movie theaters. The projectionists must know a lot about shooting. After all, they deal with film every day.
I can't wait for Scarlet to come out. It is then, when finally everyone will automatically become a DP, once they'll get that camera, yes, even the realtors:-)

If they're as good, as you're describing, they wouldn't need a side job :wink5:
