  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the New OConnor O-Box WM Mattebox

Details about step-downs etc. coming next week. The common ones (such as 110mm) will be available at the same time as the matte boxes.

So you either take a bellows ring and reduction ring (with screw-in) to 110mm for RPPs, or if you're not using filter you just take a clamp ring to 110mm?

is that correct?

The mattebox itself holds two filters, either 4x4 or 4x5.65, with one rotating. A bellows back holds an additional circular 138mm filter. The bellows back also allows for some expansion/contraction of the lens during focus or zoom adjustment. The rear of the mattebox has a clamp, which is how the bellows attaches to it. When going directly to the clamp back (or a clamping reduction ring), the mattebox is hard-mounted to the lens so no support rods are needed. Due to the flexibility of a bellows back, support rods are necessary when using this item.

Just thought I would add something here that should be obvious... If you are going to be attaching grips to the mattebox (since it is designed to accommodate that), the mattebox should definitely be attached to support rods. Otherwise, you will be placing unnecessary stress on your lens and mount. Clamp-rings can also slip if you are pulling the camera around by the mattebox.

I know, I know... But it only takes one brief moment of stupidity to really make a mess of things.

I would state that as a recommendation, not an absolute. I know many camera ops who for years have held ARRI and Panavision cameras on their shoulders simply with both hands on either side of a clamp-on mattebox.I'm not saying it is the safest way to go, but it is certainly quite common.
 
With larger camera builds you need to use common sense regarding how it’s being manipulated…I think both of you are correct; rods are a safer way to go while operating from the mattebox has been done for years.

That being said with the smaller form factor cameras coming to market (and Epic is certainly no exception) you can create a build where no baseplate is needed to support the camera and a grip or grips are used for hand held operation while the camera is safely clamped into the mattebox by the lens.

But you do have to use clamp reduction rings, right? You can't have a different back with a specific diameter like on a LMB5? Do you find that the reduction ring makes things a bit more complicated when you want to clamp/unclamp?
I guess I'm also asking if this could make a good replacement for an LMB5. I already know it's much more versatile!
I will try and see one for myself at the SATIS expo next week in Paris, if any reseller has it.
 
Instead of swapping clamp-backs, it is a simple swap of reduction ring. The rear clamp is 150mm, and then there are rings from 150-114, 110, 95, etc. No cascading several rings within one another. I find it more straightforward and equally strong to use a single reduction ring as it is to use swap clamp-backs. Faster, too.
 
That's not correct. Let me know who you spoke to. I'll let everyone know as soon as they arrive, but it will be quite soon.
 
Thanks so much for the info Mitch and Eric! Abel + OConnor is a pretty
incredible combination of service and quality.

If it's not too much trouble at some point, I was wondering if you guys could
possibly show a pic of a full OConnor shoulder mount setup (can be the Red
shoulder plate or another brand until OConnor's is released) with the OGrips,
OBox and CFF-1. Of course, a pic of the Epic with that setup would be even better
... but I understand that might be a little harder to obtain :wink5:

I'm asking for myself, but also because I think there are a lot of others on
this board who be interested and probably very impressed by how well
OConnor's new gear integrates with Red (and future Red models).

Ahhhhh, yes. I had seen this before but the Red cam comes in so quickly
at the end I missed it the first time around. Yes even just more photos of
that setup and perhaps how it looks when someone is holding it.

I have a feeling it might lead to a sudden increase in orders for
the OGrips, FF and Box from users on this forum.

Like I said, only if/when you guys have time :-)
