It's kinda humorous to me how people are ranting on how RED has doubled the price of Scarlet since it's first inception.
QUESTION: How can the first price increase of $1,000 double the price of a 3K for $3K Scarlet?
FACTS: People went nuts in April 2008 when RED let people have an inside look at this new camera called the Scarlet.
"$3K for 3K" was a great marketing slogan for people to talk about...just as a 4K RAW camera for $17,500 was/is. In reality that was for a brain only.
When peoples begged for an interchangeable lens model of Scarlet, RED said "Okay. We can go the extra mile to make you guys happy. Oh, and by the way...we can give it for LESS than $3,000 ($2,750)".
Later on, when people woke up to the realization that modules would be necessary, the question was asked "Can you give us the most basic modules in a package deal to everyone. That way you can sell in bulk, and we can save money." Again, RED was there to work with us. They announced that they would give us more than $2,200 worth of essential modules for only additional $1,750 on top of the $3,000 FIXED Lens/Brain.
Now, common sense would make you think "Wow! RED is really on our side". But no. Some people had opposite feelings and said "WHAT? We were gonna pay $3,000 and now we have to pay $5,000? (people seem to like to round off the number to next highest $1,000 for some reason)
Only til a few days ago did the first price increase come into being since the first conception of Scarlet. Why do we see so much drama over the "$167 per stop" of latitude? Seriously guys. If Canon was as open as RED and said "Hey, what would you think about us moving the cost of the 7D from $1,599 to $2,599? In return, you will get HDR video.", what would you say? Do we really have to think about that one? After all...we want the Dynamic Range that film has to offer but we've never had the opportunity to fully see it become a reality on the digital side of things.
I think some people's emotions over "RED taking forever and a day to release the Scarlet" are kinda gettin' into some people's skin. Maybe we should all take a step back and re-look at the facts, as well as RED's own personal situation?
RED isn't being lazy here (quite the opposite indeed). This DSMC project is a behemoth...one they did not really fully comprehend when they first started from scratch. Give them some time and in the meantime, shoot with what you have or what you can afford when the next greatest toy/tool on the market is.
MORAL TO THE STORY: When people get mad, history is forgotten and mathematics are lost as well. :biggrinjester:
