Andrae,

If I understand the question correctly..

The discount from the $5750 to $4500 is the form or a credit or rebate when you buy the Stage II (or III as well?) upgrade.

I just sent my Red in today for the MX refit, and that is what was explained to me. I am in Stage II.

Thanks Brent & Scott. I need to send one more camera in for the MX sensor upgrade. It's going to be sweet getting some of that money back.

I think we're now a bit before Tatoo stage, I'll start thinking about receiving Epic when OffHollywood will publish their Tatoo pics.
I think we're some months before Stage 2. I saw the workin'Epic @ IBC '10, when I saw the 1st workin'R1 @ NAB '07 it was just 1 year before receiving mines, I hope they'll be a bit quicker this time!
I want Epic but I still have to rent my MXs a bit more to pay their new incredible eyes!

Are we EVER going to stop this completely ridiculous pattern of giving out bad information about the Tattoo program? In a post on May 31, 2010, Jarred clearly stated that Tattoo had already begun...

Correct... The Tattoo Program has already begun, Snake Oil, Lucky, Jackpot, Crackpot and Ghost are all Tattoo cameras that have been built in the last couple weeks. Several more are being assembled, and once Firmware V1.0 is ready, those new Tattoos will be delivered to the selected few that are in the Tattoo program.

Enough already.

(And if you do a search, you'll need the correct spelling of Tattoo.)

RED MX trade for stage 3

RED MX trade for stage 3

Hi Red team,

Back in May I held off on upgrading my Red One #1007 to MX and simply trade in for Stage 3.
Due to the announced delay in Epic I have recently upgraded my Red to MX.
I now realize the $1250 credit for MX reds only applies to Stage1 and 2...and missed that boat.
Please consider some kind of option for re-opening stage 2 (or a similar) and/or offering some concession for MX upgraded Red credit for stage 3.
I'm not expecting miracles but am well aware things are subject to change:)
Thanks for listening!

Brian Broz

True...we also think to upgrade our fabulous RED ONE to MX sensor.... but If we take stage 3, we must trade our RED MX for 17 500$ same price that normal RED ONE...

No one did advice us about it....when Red announce the trade for EPIC.

Pleace Jim make something....

If you're trading in, why not just not upgrade?

The offer is pretty generous as it is... (10k USD for an Epic), or do you want it for 5 because you upgraded your RED. I like that math... -:)

Doesn't affect me, but i have friends that cant make sense out of the upgrade given the current policy.

But they have a point. Maybe something in between? He said please. :)

Never thought of that MX upgrade issue before... yeah it does seem like it would stop many people from making the upgrade if they lose their camera going for Stage 3. I'm losing 10k going for Stage 2 (well less if you count the MX discount)... people making the Stage 3 upgrade are losing well over 10k... if you count loss of the camera + the MX upgrade. Stage 3 for the MX upgraders... doesn't seem so good when you think about it. Kind of happy that I went with Stage 2... makes more sense now.

Are you loosing 10k or saving 25K. Canon has never told me I could trade in my old camera and pay only 1/3 of what the new one was worth. Its an awesome deal for those of you who bought before October last year.

Definitely not complaining about keeping both my MX RED bodies and further getting Epic bodies & accessories. Was comparing the difference to what Stage 3 buyers have to pay.

being realistic

being realistic

my camera is MX upgrading right now - and I'm pretty sure the delivery time (for me at least) puts the Epic out to at LEAST April of 2011 given my stage (stage 3) and my serial number (~6800).

I can't see them getting around to me before then. I just wish - given all the unknowns regarding delivery - that RED would take a bit of stress off of the stage 3 requirements - particularly the 30 days to deliver $10K part - especially after pumping another almost $6K into the camera.

Maybe an MX upgraded camera traded in for stage 3 gets you a 60 or 90 day window to pay up? A regular RED gets you 30? Loans/leases are considerably harder to get now than a couple of years ago, and this takes that reality into account.

RED doesn't actually lose anything in this instance, and it encourages customers to do business with RED during the gap between Stage 2 and stage 3 delivery - particularly those with later serial numbers.

I really want to continue my path through to the Epic, buy all the gadgetry, and make the most of my camera package - but if I lose out on the Epic upgrade because I miss the payment window by buying in to MX, I will likely just keep that camera and avoid spending money on it as much as possible - as I believe many people would.

Please don't misconstrue this as bitching - I am continuously surprised by Jim's generosity and the business savvy of creating an upgrade path the likes of which they have provided. But I think the key to making that bold move continue to work for RED is to accomodate the needs of the customer in light of the general state of the economy, and the fluctuations in the delivery schedule.

I'm in the same boat with the MX upgrade, since I'm aiming for stage 3.
It's really the timeline uncertainty that's a problem. If I knew that my place in line for EpicX is a year away, I wouldn't hesitate upgrading to MX. But it could also happen in 2-3 months in which case I would probably have to take a $6k loss (figuratively speaking, since the EpicX trade program is very generous as it is).

Something tells me that with the new Red policy of keeping things under wraps, it could easily happen sooner rather than later. :)

My 17-50 only took two weeks from order to delivery...... It seems that the Red Team is making sure that they have enough stock to satisfy the demand before they announce shipping, which is great news.

P.S. Brent or anybody at Red Swat team if you are reading this, I still haven't received my MX upgrade email. Hope you guys didn't forget me. :)

Faithfully,

Weren't the details of the M-X upgrade program announced well before the Epic reservations were opened? I actually remember taking all these factors into account when we made our decision.
I always thought Stage 3 only made sense if you were not going to upgrade. Of course, as Milan noted, with Epic being delayed that is somewhat put into question.

Yes, all the details were given quite clearly about the stages. And then clarified and reclarified. There is an element of gamble and luck in stage 3, but you have the choice of delaying trading in. And as was pointed out, what other camera company gives you ANY trade in credit -- never mind one so generous. And don't forget how happy you were to shoot with Red with an M sensor. And there is still demand for it. Really, it seems a shame that such generosity can result in us sometimes losing perspective.
