Would you or NOT be willing to pay an extra $1000 (more or less) for HDRx on Scarlet? I most definitely would...

The jury is still out on Scarlet and HDR but it just does not have the processing power of an EPIC.

I have to wonder if Scarlet owners would prefer HDR in their cameras if they had to pay extra for it. We could up the processing power by adding boards but that will cost money and I'm not sure if Scarlet buyers will go for it. Some feedback on this would be helpful on another thread in the Scarlet section of reduser. Given the change in development path, board costs, an additional ASIC and "stuff", we are probably looking at an additional $1000 more or less.

Just thinking out loud here...

Someone want to start a thread there? It should be good for a lively debate.

Jim

I don't know - apart from the extra cost, there's also the extra development time this would take. I'd say that it's best to get the Scarlet out as soon as possible and then have HDR in Scarlet 2.0 later on down the track...

I would like to see an HDR module if that's a possible route. I personally want Scarlet to be as affordable as possible and keeping the price low is crucial for me and I'm sure others.

HDRx looks fantastic but it's really an added bonus and not essential to the camera. Jim has even stated that in many situations HDR isn't needed and doesn't provide anymore visible dynamic range. Therefore I think an HDR module is the best possible route.

I'm not a huge tech guy so if a module is completely out of the question then I'd have to say I'd rather have a cheaper camera than the added bonus of HDR even though it is pretty amazing.

No. Not right now.

The point is this is a modular system. If it doesn't have the brawn in its current form, altering it, adding boards, would add yet more time to the development. I'd rather not wait an extra couple months. I'll buy Scarlet 1.0 with, what 12, 13 stops DR and 'live' with that. Then the people at RED can build us Scarlet 2.0 and we can buy that brain next year. I never thought this would be my end-all purchase.

Horses for courses, really.

Keep Scarlet affordable for larger market. It has much more DR than any other camera in the price range and, making it less affordable just for one rarely used feature is not worth the hassle and development time and focus.

Want HDR? Get an Epic.

I agree with Pascal, however, if I am going to invest in a professional machine like the scarlet, I would want to get the most for my money.
If they had two versions of the scarlet at the beginning, I would pick the HDR version. If it came down to another year in development, I might break and invest in the Non-HDR Scarlet and rent it out once I am able to purchase a new HDR version...
Hope that made sense...

Yes

Yes

If we can get Scarlet (soon) at extra 1000$ for onboard HDR: Yes.
If we can get Scarlet and choose to have the board/module installed at purchase or pay later for an upgrade, Yes of course, what is there to think about?
-So that leads to the question for Red on leaving room (connectors) inside the camera for possible added future modules, in case things like extra processing power needs to reside inside, rather than as added external modules.
In any event, bring it on.

-Pawel: It is not just a question of Scarlet or Epic to me. The advantage of Scarlet fixed has to do with my shooting style/environment.

It's not so much the cost as the extra develop time that would concern me. I have a long gestating film project and the one thing I can never buy back no matter how much I pay is the days spent without the right camera to do it. This camera will be more than good enough without HDR.

Scarlet with HDR would be absolute killer as a student / 16mm alternative / micro-budget/ "young" pro camera... and more.

Besides having that extra DR at your disposal for whatever aesthetic choices you're making, I imagine the extra money put in there could be a real money saver when actually shooting, whether chasing the last bit of sunlight on a location you can only get that day or in a minimal lighting package / run and gun situations.

Module would be cool if possible so the cam comes out sooner... but I didn't see that presented as an option.

If I could "just get an Epic" at this point, I'd be in the program already.

I don't believe in phrases like "Film Killer" or "DSLR Killer" but putting that HDR in would make the 2/3" Scarlets almost irresistible compared to anything else in the class.

For me, it would change my compromise camera into a great choice.

I think something like this is best suited for a later send in upgrade program. That way you have best of every world. No extra time to develop and test these additions, the price point stays in the sweet spot, and the option is still there in the future for Scarlet owners looking to get a bit more out of their already fantastic camera.

The MX sensor upgrade program was extremely successful, I say leave high end HDR modes for EPIC.

That said, more footage (from Scarlet and HDR Epic) might sway my opinion one way or the other. . . ;)

I'd agree, good idea. That is if a future 'send in upgrade programme' is possible, ie if the body wouldn't need to be larger in order to accommodate another board etc.

Like many, I'm sure, I very much like the idea of HDR, but would be concerned if enabling it in Scarlet for launch meant building in a further delay. Scarlet S35 may be some way off anyway, so might not necessarily be too badly affected, but if 2/3rds is closer its release date would suffer.

Would it be possible that Scarlet does HDRx™ without the additional boards at 24fps/25fps instead of 60fps with boards? 1000$ isn't so much, but I think many people would love Scarlet to stay as cheap as possible. Myself, I would rather spend the extra $1000, if there is no way at all to enable HDRx™ without the boards.

Yessssssssssssssssssssssss. This feature is worth tenths of thousands! Never before, not something even the best film stocks could do! Absolutely.

It should be made clear what HDR can achieve before people vote. Perhaps you can post a very quick description on the first post. Then hopefully embed two pictures for comparison. Jim might make those available if this is as important to him as I think it is.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Does this apply to both S35 and 2/3"?

Not everyone would want to pay $1000 for HDRx. HDRx Module seems like the best option. If that is impossible, maybe a HDRx enabled variant at a later stage. In addition to the higher price, it would also further delay release for those who can do without HDRx.

Assuming there is no time delay I am all for it, and if not I would go for an upgrade of some sorts (depending on the length of the delay).

From what I could tell Jim did not mention a time delay, I'm not saying there wont be one just he didn't make a point of it.

I would like to point out that I am for building the original model as well as the HDRx™ capable models no matter when they come out and with the $1000ish extra cost.
