  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC HDR...

If RED doesn't give you the best cameras with the best options at the best prices with the most post options and the easiest to use and most complete post program... we suck and you should go somewhere else.

Jim

Now that is a slogan.

Fabulous.

And even though one might not need 18 stops in most situations, applying max DR can be a beautiful point of departure for many post interpretations. It won't be the first time I've tailored a flat neg so that I might print it on a high contrast paper. It has a look and feel like no other combo. And this isn't a fix it or create it in post solution, it is, among other things, expanding pre-visualization territory. And that was tough terrain with only eight stops to work with.

Jim and Co. are continuing to pave a way through the desert.

RED team congrats on taking the lead on all counts once again.
+3 (or 6!) stops of Highlight protection means more freedom.

Epic will usher in a new era of filmmaking. Small units that are more focused on story telling than working around lighting limitations. Small battery powered light units, hidden in the shot like microphones, and practicals that that are even more practical!

Re:
That scenic image Jim posted just grabs me... I don't know what's up with it, but it seems to have such a nice texture to it. Almost <cough> filmic in quality. Great color for being ungraded.

Absolutely, Jeff. That image speaks volumes. And it is all good. Spectacular in fact.

The only disadvantages are that you record twice the data.

Since that likely also means twice the processing time - possibly more - will it still be possible to process these streams in real time, either at reduced resolution or via current Rocket cards? Or will this require a new Rocket design? This is an important question because a number of us are using systems like Baselight and Scratch that permit real time grading directly from the R3d files, and it is a significant advantage. We really wouldn't want to have to go back to transcoding prior to grading. These kind of photographic advancements are obviously terrific, but workflow is critical - don't want to take backwards steps there.

I have an EPIC here with me and I just don't need anything else. The "if I just had ____ (fill in the blank) is gone. I just might retire on this one and go to Fiji.

BTW... I have an EPIC with side SSD that shoots 5K at any REDCODE I want up to 250. It also shoot 120fps at 2.33:1. It weighs less than nothing. I LOVE it. I don't want anything more...

Jim

Now you're teasing me, and probably others too. I want what you have. I need it, I crave it. Gimme gimme please!

Nothing to add but....

FANTASTIC NEWS RED LEADER!

Baked in or post option is amazing.
Love to see a back-lit sunset shot...
Whats Leonardo's schedule like this week?
or better yet,
"Milk Girls 2" on the beach at sunset.

...that would work.

My bet is that EPIC is the 1st digital camera to beat film in every way.

It is smaller than every 35mm film camera. It has more resolution. More dynamic range. The color science is now perfect. It is cheaper than a film camera. It records to a reusable SSD or CF. The results are NOW.

I have to say that EPIC achieves everything we ever set out to accomplish. Wow.

Jim

I knew this would happen eventually. It happened in stills and was only a matter of time before history repeated in motion. So... you are saying you are pretty happy with Epic? Seriously, congrats on making history, or at least making it officially very soon. Making film cameras obsolete is a truly "Epic" accomplishment.

Amen !

Absolutely GREAT with the feature of HDR. We will see how we will deal best with this... but as you said Jim.... NO camera manufacturer does what you guys are doing.... so... go for it.... Thanks for all the work... we are looking into very interesting coming years in digital cinema production.... you leave the competitors far away behind you..... that is a VISION.... and we live for work with visions.....

Yes - hopefully it's more like just having 3-6 more stops of dynamic range. Could you outline the cost of this in terms of max FPS and Data rate ?

Matt Uhry

Max frame rate is 48fps for 5K... and double the data rate.
