  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE MX - Now Shipping on Demand.

I see your point Niko but you have to see mine. Those of us who have upgraded our Red Ones to M-X have paid over $23,000 for our cameras. It's very important to all of us that the bottom doesn't fall out of our investments. What I meant was I'm pleased they didn't just leave the price at $17,500 and give new adopters our $23,000 camera at a discount. It's a two-sided coin.

I know my comment was a bit snarky, and I do know where you're coming from. I just always cringe a bit when people champion philosophies that make these cameras less accessible, which goes against one of the philosophies of what these guys are trying to accomplish here.

It is a catch-22, for sure.

You're dead right Niko and I must say I cringed a bit when I was writing my reply :001_unsure:

I remember during my Blackmagic days, dealing with people complaining about how the card they bought a month ago for $2k was now selling for $1k. Our stock answer - and a very good and sensible one - was that when they bought the card it was a bargain at $2k and it still did everything it was supposed to do. And, to a great extent, to anyone who has one of these cameras and intends to keep it, the current market value might be seen as a little irrelevant. However, this is a significantly larger investment than a video card, the market price is reflected in rental prices and you just never know in this business when you might need to liquidate your assets. All of which tell me that it's just better if the price remains somewhat stagnant.

Bear in mind that the Red M-X I'm in charge of, as well as the Epic-X on order, are not mine but belong to someone else. When (and if) I finally have the money to buy my own, I'm going to be wishing things were cheaper. But then there's always Scarlet. :001_cool:
 
Thanks Peter...... I thought my Stage 2.5 idea had been activated..... Where to encourage more MX upgrades and avoid a tidal wave of R1's coming back they could offer a 2.5 deal where you can still get into the Stage 2 deal if you upgrade to an MX.

What percentage of R1's went MX do you think? 20% or 30%?
 
I am in the last, or next to last mailing. I am going MX.

As for the percentage... I can say of the 7 or so I know of, 2 were sold (probably MX'd after), 1 went MX and and mine, that will be soon. In other words. 2 out of 7 that I know of.

Of course that is a rally small sample:)
 
Well, I don't have as much blind faith in "Made in America" as I did when I was a kid 40 years ago. And generally think I get more value for dollar spent with quality products being manufactured offshore. Hate to say that, but it seems true. That said, I'm sure Red has lined up a red-hot manufacturing partner for Epic that kills at quality work and QC, so its all good.

We found out over the years that nobody could put these things together better than we could.

Yeah but does it really cost any more to make the MX sensor than the M sensor?

You payed $23,000 because you got *two* sensors and associated electronics. If you buy a MX Red you only payed for the manufacturing and installation of a single sensor.

It's like buying a car. Buying a replacement engine and having it installed. Then the next year model costing more than the original car with original engine and the new engine combined including labor of installing both engines.

Alternately you could look at it as having been sold the upgraded engine at below cost and with free labor. So who knows. Still I raise an eyebrow when buying 2 of something costs less than than buying one. ;)

There have been enormous benefits for going with RED early.

I think the $25k pricing reflects this... I've gotten a whale of a good deal with my camera because I got in early.

Smart. Probably the only reasonable way to manage manufacturing complex products in a relatively small scale (1000s vs 100000s) that are evolving at such a fast clip. I know it flys in the face of the rebel alliance image, but one might actually acuse Red of having it's shit together!

Epic is actually $28000 and doesn't come with the same I/O as Red One out of the box. You will need to add some modules to Epic to get the same functionality.

I get nostalgic for those times too. They have passed. It is nice to see American companies making a decision towards "Made in America".

As a Canadian I feel the same way about made in Canada.

Epic is $28K and (unless you're a Red One owner getting free accessories on a Stage 2 or Stage 3 upgrade) that just gets you a brain, which doesn't even have a full set of controls on it. You need to buy at least ~$5K in additional modules to duplicate the functionality of the Red One body, bringing the Epic's "base" price up to at least $33K.

Plus, the MX Red One is available now, which is worth a fair bit.
 
Arguably Red One competes directly with far more expensive cameras in terms of performance, yet it is priced like a typical mid range 2/3" ENG/EFP camera. Still an excellent value and well positioned in the market. MX is capable of spectacular imagery.
Hopefully not too much longer before there are lower priced Scarlets available.

Reaching this point with Red One MX is certainly something of a milestone.
 
I will go out on a limb here and speculate that the $28K EPIC body pricing will only apply to early adopters and also those who buy early in the EPIC release cycle.

But there is a good chance that RED will be forced to apply price increases over time, possibly even a rather short time - just as they have applied price increases to RED ONE as the MX sensor evolved into a new imaging standard, and just as they have already needed to make adjustments in pricing to the fixed lens SCARLET, prior to releasing it.

No doubt that RED will continue to stay more affordable than the competition, because that is one of their core commitments, but all this innovation must have a price tag.

I'm grateful to have been able to stage in my RED ONE MX purchase (and eventual EPIC-X) over time. That has certainly helped me to afford both of these cameras. RED has definitely treated its early customers well.

The way to receive that treatment is...to become an early customer. Purchase a used early RED ONE place in line or buy an EPIC body hot off the production line...because you will probably be getting the best possible pricing. The $28K body pricing has been widely enough disseminated that RED will stick with it for awhile.

But a pricing adjustment would not be -- and *should* not be, if you follow RED history -- a surprise.

Another fascinating milestone is the 40% price increase, set against a time where in other digital imaging markets, manufacturers are also adding features but lowering prices.

I almost bought a MX for quite a bit more then $25k this week.

Yeah Jonny, that was then but now with the MX available at the store, no one can ask for for that kind of money, and if they wan to sale they must stay below 25.5k (since this is the price w/CF Module) to offer saving from buying new, or they will keep their R1-MX.

For a new Red MX buyer, is there an upgrade path to Epic ?

NO, there is not, any cameras purchased after the cut off date of May 22, do not longer qualify to any stage to Epic, and or Scarlet discounts.
