  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Zoom vs Prime question

Considering the modularity of the Scarlet system, swapping out brains should be an extremely simple/fast process. Though the speed of the swap would depend on how built up your rig is. The more modules, the longer the swap... the more bare bones, the faster.

the reasoning you're seeing above comes down to the fact that there's no great quality interchangeable-zoom for the 2/3 cinema that fits into the price structure many of us 2/3 buyers can afford.

as David stated above, a used S16 zoom in the same league as the lens on the 2/3 fixed will cost around $4k minimum. because of that, it's actually cheaper to buy a fixed kit (which comes with everything but a CF card or 2 to get rolling) and a 2/3 cinema brain + whatever mini primes you want and just switch all of the components between the brains for the desired set-up.

having said that, i still hope for the seemingly impossible; that is a RED mini-zoom in the $1k-2k range so i can have an all around single-brain package... but i'm not going to hold my breath :smile5:

The issue I have is that an 8x zoom is not enough for what I need. I don't have a need for primes but I do have a need for a long zoom. If they can put together a 16x zoom my interest would be peaked.

Last we heard it was shipping with a Mini-PL mount which is the mount the Mini-Primes use.

I'm hoping a separate 2/3" bayonet won't be far behind...there's a lot of nice 2/3" glass I'd like to use on a Scarlet.

You can use a PL mount and a B4/PL adapter (http://www.red.com/store/295-0006), but that route will cost you around $4000.

What 2/3" glass are you referring to? Is any of it affordable? The only zooms I've seen that would be high enough resolution are $10k+.
