  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any one know where I can purchase a Zoom H4N in Puerto Rico?

Mail order or internet won't do me any good. I'm vacationing here and want to record some ambient before I leave. Internet will not ship to me here because it's not my billing address.

Thanks for the reply. I knew WalMart sold them but they weren't in the stores. It did look like they'd deliver to a store but I couldn't determine if they'd nail down a timeframe. I didn't want it to arrive after I left so I didn't order.
 
I may be using the Zoom recorder on a shoot on Sunday. Is there a way to get timecode from the Zoom to the RED like I can with a Sound Devices 702T recorder? Or am I just going to have to clap the slate for everything?
 
The Zoom doesn't support timecode.
However, if you have an Ambient Lockit or Denecke SB-3, you can use it to output timecode into the RED, and output audible timecode to one channel of the Zoom. That does, however, turn your Zoom into a one channel recorder, and you'll need a certain FCP plugin that I forget the name of to read the audible timecode you're recording on the Zoom.

Personally, I'd either pay the rental costs for a recorder that does support timecode, or just clap the slate and sync everything by hand if you're going the cheaper route of the Zoom.

EDIT: the plugin I was trying to think of may actually be the FCP auxTC Reader by VideoToolShed, but it's been a few years since I did that sort of thing.

Normally I have a Sound Devices 702T recorder available, from which I sync TC to the RED. I sync in post using Sync-n-Link. But that's not available to me when I'm shooting, so I'm borrowing the Zoom. I'll record a scratch track on the RED and slate and sync everything by hand. Its a very short project (maybe 3 minutes long at most) so it won't be too painful. I'm trying to spend as little as possible on this. But its good to know about the audible TC option.
 
Would you use an H4N on a student short film or indie feature, I've been hearing good things about them, are they really that good?

The H4N offers great bang for the buck at a lower price point, but lacks serious professional features like time code, high end Mic Pres, quiet phantom power, high quality built-in limiters, and professional metering & monitoring.
That being said, yes the H4N can be used to achieve professional results if you utilize a proper workflow.
A: Use a slate when shooting to provide sync in post.
B: Use a professional level mixer feeding the H4N Line Level through a set of pads. This insures a higher quality result by bypassing the built-in phantom power and microphone preamps of the H4N, and gives your sound mixer a proper way to monitor and meter the audio chain.
