So who is going to come up with an affordable zoom for live theatre (aka SCL-Z18X140 FZ Mount 14X Power Zoom Lens from Sony)? That fits on a Red!!

Affordable is the big thing.

I've shot multicam live RED for the last 4 years and used every lens under the sun. The Alura 45-250 is really nice live, but not exactly cheap.

Shot with the Canon 30-300 PL a few weeks back, gorgeous but in the same price category as the Alura.

If cost effective is key, then you can't go past a Nikon or Canon 80-200 that has been cinevised by Duclos. Great optics, great mechanics, and pretty affordable, around $2,500 or so. Not full range but pretty flexibile.

I bought a Cooke/Taylor Hobson 25-250 for live work a year ago, but in the end it's too bulky/heavy, and at T3.9, a bit slow.

Sometimes, on 4th or 5th cameras, I use the Nikon/Canon 18-200 f3.5/5.6. Mechanics are crap but makes a sharp nice image. Just don't try focus pulls, only good for finding sharp and leaving there until your next change. For $600 it gives a lot of flexibility for cheap! Wouldn't put it on a main camera getting important coverage, but a great way to get a ton of different shots from a camera just getting color.
