  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Zoom F8 first impressions

Does it have timecode?

Yes. I should have mine in a few hours.

Nice, I think I will sell my brand new H6 and get this instead. Can I sync it up with my Dragon with just an SDI?

Found a fairly extensive review here :

http://mixeli.us/technology/zoom-f8/

Pre-amps comparable to SD 744t so this bodes very well for this little unit.

The unfortunate thing about this unit...

"...the input limiters and high pass filters are after the analog to digital conversion stage, and much after the microphone pre-amplification stage, rendering them pretty much useless for analog inputs. Any overloading signal and/or low frequency energy will be amplified at the mic pre stage, before it is converted to digital and processed through either the limiter or the HPF."

Timecode accuracy is another unknown with this thing so far.

In still going to sell my H6 with this thing though. Seems like a great deal.

Looking forward to both Note and Phil's reviews of this unit.

I'm not a sound guy but from your samples, the Zoom F8 sounds lightyears better than the Tascam... and slightly better than the Mirantz + Mix PreD combo.

We have a F8 Unit up and running, syncs to Timecode via LTC-IN (BNC) and works good with Tentacle Sync. I made a long recording test, did run for more than 4 hours without any problems, makes a break every 2,15GB (max file size) but the files go seamlessly together.

Just one question to all the other users out there - did anyone encounter the problem of the F8 randomly stop recording?

best wishes and kind regards,
martin

When I had my unit, I did not.

Any updates on the f8? How are people liking it? I may sell my H5 and sound device pre for this. Any input.
