  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ZF Lenses Moded by Duclos

It's well worth having Matt supply the lenses, even if it adds to the cost. He will put it on the projector and make sure you are getting a sweet piece of glass.

They actually ordered a second 50mm for me as they didn't like the first one that came in. Also gave me great advice on selection, so it was only right to give them my business.

If you send him one, and he finds it's the runt of the litter, imagine the hassle of sending it back, only to have the vendor say there isn't an actual defect so they won't replace it... Argue, argue, argue...

Give Matt whatever he asks, he easily doubles the usefulness and value of the lenses.

I have ZF owners drooling over my set all the time, saying mine are sooo much better than theirs, even though they are the same lenses.
pardon me.. but isn't this just BS??

where are those refused by matt going??

to garbage? (where's it? :bigear:)
to the original supplier?? not argue argue argue yadda yadda then, why?? duclos house?
to the still photographers? :willy_nilly: :hand:
to the next non-picky customer?
(sorry.. couldn't resist lol)

you know matt man.. count on me as the finickiest buyer.. ehehehehe

All I know is I wasn't hassled by anything, it just happened without me, the way it should be.

Otherwise I would here in Sydney trying to organize a pickup to go back to Amazon and inconveniencing Duclos simply because I didn't want to pay him in the first place!

Lenses are the most important thing next to the camera itself. Give yourself every chance to get it right and spend the extra dough with Matt! :thumbup1:

We send them back to Zeiss in Germany. I don't know what they do with them from there. That's up to them...

I received my set of Duclos modded Zeiss ZF primes (28mm, 35mm, 50mm 1.4, 85mm and 100mm macro) and a Duclos modded Tokina 11-16mm zoom (not pl mount version) all nice and neat in a Storm Case yesterday. I am incredibly happy with my purchase, Michelle's service was outstanding and I am looking forward to my second round of purchases very shortly.

Honestly, everyone (that is other experienced DP's and a renowned large format photographer) were blown away by the images and cost/performance ratio. People may question the prices, but I am very lucky to be working constantly with little time for sending lenses back for whatever reason... I need these extra services mentioned above by Jim Hare and Duclos is very good at what they do... but if you have the time to do everything that they are doing then go for it. :cheers2:

Its about time you got that bad boy all glassed up!
Seriously, I caught your Red online one night looking at pics of lenses with their knickers down.

Let me know how the Tokina works for you. I'd like to get something at the far end of the wide range that matched well with my Contax Zeiss glass. Right now my widest lens are a Zenitar 16/2.8 and then the Zeiss 18/4, so I'd love to get something a little faster through the range.

Here's what I've got in the kit so far, obviously there is room for improvement, but it covers most of my shooting needs.
Primes: Zenitar 16/2.8, Zeiss 18/4.0, 20/2.8, 25/2.8, 28/2.8, 28/2.0, 35/2.8, 35/1.4, 45/2.8, 50/1.4 MM, 50/1.4 AE, 60/2.8 macro, 85/1.4, 135/2.8, 200/3.5, 300/4.0, Mutar I IIx. Zooms: Zeiss 35-70/3.4, 28-85/3.3-4.0, 28-70/3.5-4.5, Vivitar series 1 19-35/3.5-4.5, Sigma 70-200/2.8.

All the best!

Actually.. Yes.
Ask any of the satisfied customers who have come here to visit us and seen our shop. EVERY SINGLE GEAR is cut from ONE solid piece of delrin.

I would love to meet a machinist who can also tell you if your flange focal distance is accurate, or anything about optical quality for that matter. ;)

We do sell the lenses completed.
The cine-mod includes:
80mm front adaptor rings.
Standard 32 pitch focus gears.
De-clicked and lubricated iris.

Van Din,

From the factory, the Zeiss ZF (and almost all still lenses) use an aperture ring with detents for every whole stop. This means it "clicks" at every f-stop.
True cine lenses utilize a dampened (lubricated) smooth aperture ring with the same markings but no interruptions from wide open, to full close. There are several reasons why the clicks are not favorable.
Basically, we remove the "click" and lubricate the mechanism so that the movement is smooth and complete.

And about the focus ring, is there any lubrification service applied there?

Is there any substancial difference against Canons and Nikons related to focus?

I'm so glad you're happy with your new lenses, Andrew! You were an absolute pleasure to work with and I look forward to working with you in the future.

We do not change any lubrication in the focus. But, yes. The focus mechanics are far superior to that of Nikon or Canon still lenses. The components in the ZF lenses are made from alloy metals instead of plastics like most automatic still lenses. The lubrication provides smooth focus rotation.

The focus rotation varies on each lens.
Same can be said for Canon and Nikon lenses.
Overall, the ZF lenses have more focus throw than most still lenses on the market these days. This is because they are full manual lenses.
Modern auto-focus lenses require very little focus throw because the motors that drive the focus are very precise.
Although, you could consider the older Nikon Ai-S lenses that are also full manual and almost all offer a near full focus rotation.

But there isn't new stock, only old used lenses on ebay..

& yet..
This was my reason for getting the Zeiss lenses. I personally only used the Nikon primes to shoot stock footage and for that application they work rather well. But pulling focus on them sucks and its a good idea to not have your choice in shots dictated by how in focus they are. I still have my Nikon 80-200mm f~2.8 zoom in my kit because that lens is still nice and I wouldn't mind using it on a shoot. Pulling focus at f~1.8 on the Nikons I had would never happen. You would have to do 20 takes just to nail the focus, never mind the acting.

Matthew, I have a question, can the LEICA NOCTILUX-M 50mm f/0.95 ASPH, and the Leica Summilux M 21mm, M24mm, and M35mm lenses all at f1.4 be adapted to a PL Mount? Weather by re-housing them or not?

Along the same line of my question, will they maintain their use for the FF35? Can they be remarked for T-stops?

yeah.. no necessary.. front page.. since stephen has applied to be an elite gang's member now he's a gang savant
