I know as of 12-20 zeiss ze's were not characterized for the Epic. Since I only have a prime set of ze glass for my soon to ship scarlet, I wanted to check to see if anyone knows if they are compatible in shipping scarlets.

Yes, I believe ZE's are fully mechanical and full manual so there isn't an electronic aperture control like most other EF lenses. The only thing is you're obviously not going to get auto focus or any info from the lens on your screen or in the metadata.

For some reason I thought the ZEs had electronic aperture, and that was the main reason I was questioning whether to buy them or not. Ryan, can you confirm that they have manual aperture? I'd really love that.

Zeiss Ze are manual focus, but have electronic aperture, so if the scarlet has not been characterized yet for zeiss ze's, you wont have aperture control. Only ZF zeiss lenses are manual aperture.

Sorry you are right. I got confused because the cp2s are all manual. But from what I read on here they are compatable.

The ZE have an electronic aperture that's controlled by the camera body. I believe some if not all of them still need to be characterized in order to work on Scarlet... notably the 85 has had problems (read this somewhere on Reduser). Would love to hear from someone who has an Epic/Scarlet and ZE lenses who can verify.

It's weird what works and what doesn't. My Canon 17mm TS-E works fine. My 24mm TS-E II didn't. My assistant had the same lens, her's worked, we traded. Craziness.

I will be able to confirm this later this week. I already have my scarlet, and the LCD should be here later this week. I own the Zeiss 50mm 1.4.

I think it would be really helpful if a list is put together (and stickied) of lenses that don't fully work with the red camera.

Christopher's comment makes that sort of sticky list a bit pointless... Jarred has stated several times that the lens calibration process is pain-staking, perhaps the variables in individual wire drives and gold plate connections are what make this so difficult.

Short answer: at some point before summer, electronic iris will work just fine, but not yet.

Guys,

All I can say about the Zeiss ZFs (or ZEs), is that the image is un-be-li-va-ble. So I would highly recommend these if you are on a budget. I am also aware that if you go for a cheap Canon to Nikon adapter and are shooting at 4K, you will be opening yourself up for problems. There is one adapter that works a treat: Novoflex. Very precise and German built.

Having used a set of ZF primes for the last couple of years, their build quality, image sharpness is very, very good. And if your film is good, no one will be bothered whether it was shot with Super primes or on these babies...

Man, B&H finally has the ZE 5 lens set in stock and I'd buy those in a hot second if I knew they'd all work or not. I'd almost rather have a dumb Nikon mount scarlet and get manual lenses than to wonder if my "smart" canon mount will work or not. Hopefully some scarlet and ze owners can update us soon.
