Anyone use these as their base set?

Wondering how easy/hard they are to rack for moving subjects?

What's a good price for the 16mm, 24mm, 32mm, 50mm, 85mm PL set?

two years ago that set would have gone for about 12k, now it's more like 18-20k.

They are great lenses, I personally really like their understated nature. There is talk of them vignetting a little on the Red due to their retrofocus design.

I have a set of 2.1 primes and they look great. Sharp and contrasty. They are great work-horse lenses, and the 16,24,32 are easily modified for close focus. In 4K, the 16 has some minor vignetting on the corners, but it is light and looks like a very mild gradient. I consider it a non-issue.

No problem with rack focus. The most modern versions had 32 pitch focus gears and were mechanically robust... (unlike still photo lenses).

Mike is right about price... depending on the set, plan to spend 20k+. Still a good deal considering the price of new primes from Cooke or Ziess.

If you can find them!
I paid $20K for six (16-100mm) in November. I'd be surprised if you could find a set now and it way even be $25K for 5 now.

They are beautiful lenses, I think they're sharper than the Supers from T2.1-4.
They are also light weight and have less CA than the Cooke S4 series. Although they do breath a little more than Ultra/S4s they are much better than Nikkor or Canon FD primes.

Quite right about that! I just paid $32,000 for 6 (16-135)

24mm, 32mm, 50mm, 85mm

Edit: they were originally sold, but the parties that bought them never ended up paying, so I'm relisting them as of today.

I've listed them in the equipment section of Reduser before .. I am about again but haven't yet (I'd rather sell them to someone here then put them on a random site).

Zakaree, can you pls email me ? I'll PM you

I couldn't even find a set. I paid 17.5K for three odd lenses. 28 2.1, 65 super and 100 2.1 I did get a couple nice long lenses on ebay Canon/Century 150-600 for $5700 love this lens, but for outdoors only.

I also have the 18-50 which is really a vari-prime. But it is also more of an outdoor lens, it doesn't get real sharp till about T5.6, interesting thing about the 18-50 is I could get two screw on type filters on the lens and still have no vignetting at 18mm. This is my gotta travel light lens.

Does the 12mm vignette?

Any idea how the 12mm does on the RED? I'm looking at buying one this week.

I have the T.2.1 12mm and 14mm lenses. They both "porthole" (not vignette) wide open, in a very subtle way, as spotshooter indicated. I too consider it mostly a non-issue. They are nice and sharp and contrasty and cut well with my Superspeeds.
Does everyone know Zeiss' "dirty little secret" of the old 12mm? It's a 16mm with an aspheron mounted in front! Yep. Easier when it came down do it than designing a lens from the ground up. And served us all well for years, so don't feel cheated. Starting with the Ultras, it really was a whole different lens...
Cheers,
Harry

I found out about the aspheron thing just today and haven't yet bought the lens. I have seen the optex 10.5 lens which is supposed to be the same 16mm with their aspheron on it and wasn't that impressed with the corner resolution compared even to my $700 10-22mm Canon so I am wondering is the Arri version significantly better - since it is not quite as wide and since it is Arri? i.e. How does it compare in resolution to the other primes in your set?

What's a good price to pay for the 12mm 2.1

12mm... definitely sharper as you stop down. But it's been fine so far for broadcast work.
If I was shooting a movie I'd test first.
I got the 12mm and 14mm for $10,000 a few years ago. I've no idea which way those prices have gone since. I still think it's insane that my Superspeeds are worth twice what I paid. That trend certainly cannot continue. If I was purely mercenary I'd sell them immediately.
I'm sure all the lens pricing will settle down in the near future.
Cheers,
Harry

The 14 is nce too. It's sort of a forgotten-about, underutilized focal length... still Kubrikesque without being over the top hiphop video stylee...
Cheers,
Harry

Thanks for the input.

AS far as prices it is two things, increased demand due to RED and the devaluation of the dollar.
