Hi,

I want to buy a set of prime lenses to be used on the EPIC. I've been looking at Ultra Primes, Illuminas, Panchros, S4, etc. but I've always liked the look of old Zeiss glass and now I have the chance to buy a set of Standard Primes (T/2.1). Sometime ago I used a set on the R1 (2.40:1 4K) and was very pleased by the results, but there were some signs of vignetting/portholing when shooting wide-open with the 16mm. Nothing too bad that couldn't be fixed, but the effect was there.

Has anyone tested these lenses at 5K on the Epic? Are the 16, 20 and 24mmm still usable at full resolution or you need to switch to 4K to avoid vignetting?

Thanks in advance.

Hi ,

I've used Standards for a long time on my MX and they served me well, however the vignetting is very apparent, especially with the 32 and 28 (much worse than the 16) . They are great lenses but if the fall off is too great for me, so I sold them, also the IQ on the corners is quiet bad. On 5K this is more apparent of course and also on 4K HD. So shooting on 4k won't really help a lot. OTOH I never found it a critical problem, most of the time you can solve it by using windows; the only times you can not use them is with green screens or white limbos; the fall off to the edges drops down to almost 2 stops. Stopping down helps a bit, but you can never get rid of it. The 40, 50 and 85 don't have these issues.
Hope that helps

cheers

I always felt the portholing was a very pleasing way to center the attention in the frame, it was one of my favorite things about the lenses. It was almost gone by 2.8 so not a big deal.
At some point I compared them directly to a set of ultras and the only noticeable difference in corner resolution was a tendency for the Ultras to have purple fringing from the higher MTF.
But both out resolved the R1 MX sensor in the corners by 2.8-4. The Standards are the best deal out there in PL mount primes IMHO. Also the latest version of the 28mm Standard is the same exact floating element formula as the Ultra, just slightly smaller elements (T2.1 Vs. 1.9)

Evan, I like the avatar picture of your dog. Is he smiling, growling or none of the above?
