I recently did a test with the Monstro 8K VV and my Zeiss Otus lenses cinemodded by Lockcircle. I have seen many threads of the similarities of these lenses with the Arri Master Primes and just decided to test it out myself. I left the camera at 8K even though the Master Primes don't cover VV, you could crop to 6K to get full coverage. It just interested me that my lenses that are worth 10K, had better coverage than a set that's worth 100K. I think the results speak for themselves...

This test is to showcase how well the Zeiss Otus lenses perform. We did tests with different apertures on the three lens set. I wanted to focus on the bokeh, sharpness and large format coverage. We didn't utilise colour charts nor focus charts in this test as that wasn't the main focus, these have been done by others before and for me the main focus was bokeh and how it renders a face.

However if you are interested in a focus or resolution chart performance, we did tests after and I have stills for these that I can share.

We paired them up with the Arri Master Primes to see how similar they perform. You can find the high resolution comparison stills here :

Here you can find individual R3D stills here : drive.google.com/drive/folders/1GoJeRPQwaF0WL79vMZHXBWbplLnP29MH?usp=sharing

Feel free to download the stills and have a look at it in full 8K resolution. The video itself is compressed so best to look at the stills for critical analysis.

Hi Milan,

Thanks! I remember doing it and it was very minimal. I don't think the camera was recording then, it's a bummer, i should've done it but had limited time.

How is the breathing with the OTUS, I tested the Signature Primes and they where amazing on high detail with perfect coverage.

They have minimal to acceptable amt of breathin. Noticeably less than some anamorphic lenses (which is fine). It's there but it's not intrusive in my opinion.

Thanks for sharing the test shots, Simon. The results seem to show a little more contrast on the Otus (the shadow areas are darker), and slightly warmer on the MP. What do you think?
