  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Zeiss Milvus or Sigma Art primes?

I think it's a pretty clear win for the Milvus lenses in this particular comparison. For the simple reason that they have manual focus mechanics.

That's all there is too it really. What good is optical performance, if you can't readily and repeatedly wrangle it into position? The Milvus does allow you to do that (to an extent) so that gives it the win in my mind.

You are kidding - right? ;-)

Hi Larry. No correction. But all cropped by the same amount to see the details in the eyes. I can post the raw files.
The Milvus was obviously the easiest to use due to the longer focus throw. The Sigma 50-100 is second in that regard. Very nice feel to the focus ring actually and very smooth.
The Sigma 50mm Art has a very, very short focus throw, but smooth as well. Something to consider.

The Art are just sharper. Colorwise they look about the same.
And the focus throw can be extended with a Wireless FF, or Foolcontrol.

I own the complete Art set (except the non exsisting 85 and 100) and they are exceptional.
You can tell the sharpness is better than others, just by looking at the Red Touch 5, which is really low in resolution...

Thanks Raymond! And thanks everyone for your opinions, I really appreciate all of your collective input!

Thanks for this thread. Was ready to pull the trigger on the Milvus but this convinced me to go with
the Sigmas and absolutely love them.

Heres my ten cents worth, I don't know anything about the Milvus, but I have been shooting stills with my 35mm and 50mm sigma art 1.4's for some time now. The sigmas absolutely out perform the canons they replaced (the 35mm L (mk1) and the 50mm f1.2L) by a long shot.
With the 50mm -sharpness on the edges were way better on the sigma, and the 35mm the sigma has way less CA. These are shooting with the very sharp 52mp canon 5dsr. I get surprised sometimes about the shear amount of detail I can get out of these edge to edge completely open (I really only shoot open!). I am going to buy the 24mm and 20mm soon.

But the canon lenses do blur nicer somehow. So I still have my 50mm f1.0 and 85mm f1.2 for this. The sigmas still look good with blur, just not quite so nice.

Sigma ART vs Zeiss Milvus doesn't seem like a fair fight. Sigma ART vs Zeiss Otus is another story.

FWIW, I have found the some of the Milvus samples I've used have a bit of color cast that I end up neutralizing in RAW development.

Cheers - #19

I have used the 18-35 a ton. The 50 quite abit too. Really happy with them. I use Jacek s Optitron solution for focus and it works really well. Only annoying part is that the 18-35 locks up when opened all the way to 1.8.

I've shot with the Sigma 18-35mm and a Milvus Set 21mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm. In my opinion, the Sigma is a good lens for the budget and run and gun just like a Samyang/Rokinon. The Zeiss set just had the character in the image I was looking for and ease of functionality for my AC when we were shooting a music video. I like just love coating of Zeiss glass better honestly, that's just me.

Sigmas have character too you just have to decide which kind of character you want out of the glass you shoot with. The whole oohs and aah over sharpness is overrated honestly, I'm not saying sharpness isn't important, but don't forget about how the lens captures light before it hits the sensor. Look at the Leica R's for example, those lenses are nowhere as sharp as a Sigma 18-35mm but you have cinematographers scavenging to get a decent set bc they love the character of the lenses.

I own a old 28mm Sigma f2.8 Mini Wide II M42 Mount that to this day is sharp as hell and still shoot with for certain occasions bc it gives me a character that others don't.
